I have a pic of an ultrastar with the alum legs that someone might be interested in. I crunched the originals in an engine out so I rebuilt them with the plans from a friend and they were fabulous. I could not believe how much it changed the landing characteristics. wow, great. much better than the original. This uses the old style very small firestar gear legs. I have the plans and pics if anyone is interested in it. Ted Cowan.

Will- This is "off List", as it is a little long. On web search, enter Kolb Firefly, and scroll down to "My Firefly". At the bottom of any page, click on "flight", and follow the links to his brother's site, and then to an "in the cockpit" video called "Around the Patch". Go to full screen, and turn the volume up. I don't remember the guy's name, but you will love it. It takes a minute to load, but well worth it. His article on building one is full of tips. Bill Sullivan old FS

Most of that testing has already been done for you. Landshorter recommends that VG's be placed 11 % of the chord back from the leading edge of the wing. Just as important as the distance from the leading edge is the angle of the VG into the wind so that it creates effective vorticies without stalling and creating to much drag, which is 15 degrees into the wind. These numbers are not Kolb specific, but they work well in most of our class airplanes. A lot of people have used landshorter VG's at the recommended positions on Kolbs with great results. My results were so good, and my plane flys so well that its not worth my time moving the the VG's around to different positions. Just installed my new anr set in my military helo style helmet. I had to salvage parts to set it up originally and then I put the new parts from this company in. what a difference. I had harmonics and noise I just could not get away from. padded between the wings and behind my seats. better but still had to have the radio turned almost all the volume I could get. Took my little slingshot up this morning and wow, wow, wow. Went zoom zoom and wow wow. I could not believe the differnce. I had to turn the radio down to less than half!! Mostly could only hear the prop wherrring. Talked to a hand set on the ground at about five miles and closer and could hear perfectly. The ground reported it clearer with it turned on than off. Great. That my friends, only cost me $202.00 delivered. Maybe I wont loose my hearing as soon now. Best money I ever spent. Glad you like it Ted. Converted my old DC 10-60 headset many years ago and the difference it makes is huge. Nowadays I am using top of the line Telex Stratus something or other with 50 total decibels anr reduction. I set next to a fellow that has Bose and we swapped it around. The telex ANR and we both agreed is quieter than the Bose and a few hundred bucks cheaper. It seems to me that the claim that if they start with top of the line passive headset and then add an ANR gizmology to it makes for the best combination and best noise reduction. Yah, feel like I know you, too, Possum. It's been 10 years now. I still have the video tape you sent, and still enjoy it and laugh at it from time to time. I've met a lot of good folks all over the continent from the List in my travels over those years, and met many more at MV. It's been a good time. The Deep South visit I cancelled on the List a couple of weeks ago is probably back on again. Circumstances have changed again, and the problems in Canada are resolved, so I might just head East in June for Lousy-ana's Atchafalaya Swamp, Okefenokee, and at least Central Florida. We'll see. If I do go, I'll make a run up to (shudder) Atlanta from Okefenokee, just for you. :-) I'd really like to find some real swamp crawlers to take me out into that area and get wet and dirty chasing snakes and 'gators and gar and turtles. :-) It's always better with someone who really knows the area. I did send an email a while back hoping to get an answer from that guy who said he lived just north of Okefenokee, but never heard back from him. Hi All, I posted this to make sure everyone checked the Rotax gearbox AD. I had to do mine. I can do yours as I am an authorized and certified Rotax service center. Rotax has a new class certification process since Jan. 2008. If you need it done let me know as I have a new batch of gear sets coming in this week. I can up my order by Monday morning if need be. I have a 1 day turn around if shipped to me and a 2.5 hr. turn around if you fly in. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. Won't hurt a thing. Do you know that Penzoil just relabels some of their products for marketing. No change in actual formula. Talk to the marketing guys and they'll tell you there is a difference. I have talked to the engineer's at Penzoil group and they say BS they just relabeled. And I'm sure if you talk to other people you will hear everything in between. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=168669#168669

If you are going to cry "wolf", at least do it with the right words. Rotax released a "Service Bulletin", SB-912-056 UL and SB-912-056. As stated earlier, you can get the SB at the Rotax Owners website or you can get it straight from Rotax at: http://www.rotax-aircraft-engines.com/pdf/dokus/d04129.pdf I prefer to use the factory site for all my documentation. Reporting in on the Repairman / E-LSA process: Completed the EAA SportAir Workshop course at Oshkosh this weekend. Learned a lot and scored 98% on the test (I did not know where cables are most likely to break) Now I need to present my application at the FSDO and I am all set. 16 Hours of class and lab, 50 question exam, and 16 E-LSA owners in the class. It was a fun time as well as educational. There was one other Kolb drive from Omaha there too. He has never heard of the Kolb List, but it is understandable because he does not use the Internet either..... yikes. The class encouraged him to get on-line and get networking. Is the angle of 15 degrees into the relative air up or down? And is the relative air the air that comes up the airfoil or the direct air from the path of the aircraft? Thanks, Vic

[quote="williamtsullivan(at)att.n"]Everyone keeps wondering what oils are the same. Someone once told me to check the "Mil-Spec" number on the container. If they match, it is okay to use. I don't know if this is true- John H. can you help on this? I heard this while working in the trucking business. Bill Sullivan old FS > [b] That's only if the application requires an oil or fluid that meets a mil-spec ("military specification" I believe). I.e., certain brake fluids in general aviation aircraft, etc. The engine oil grades we use in our Rotaxen are specified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and aren't generally milspec grades. I.e., SF, SG...SM and so on are API service grades for automotive engine oiles of the type we use in our 912's, It's all spelled out in painful detail on the API website, for instance for motor oils: http://www.api.org/certifications/engineoil/categories/index.cfm LS -------- LS FS II Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=168713#168713

Kolb guys, Gentlemen, could someone kindly steer me in the right direction to start the licensing/registration process for my MkIII? Up to this point I haven't done anything yet. That's because in the past I never had the feeling I was ever going to be actually finished building my MkIII. Sure, I worked on it...here and there...but there was always SOOO much to do, I just never had an idea it would ever be done. I've owned this blasted thing for almost 10 years!! Now, I think I can see "light at the end of the tunnel" (and no, it's not a train!!). I have all my receipts, original Kolb Company invoice, etc, etc. I also have lots of photos of various stages of me building it. Additionally, I am a former EAA member. I expect I am going to re-up, as it were! (military term, it means re-activate my old membership, for you civilians) Well, enough babbling. Anyone care to point? No "wolf", but a fact and and a slip of the tongue. Being accused of "crying wolf" is a little harsh when some one wants to help people. After I heard Rotax state what the compliance was on AD's, SB's ,SI's and SL's I was along with others dumbfounded that usually only 20%-50% comply. Anything above 25% is a lot they said. Most don't even bother to send in a warranty card for their engine. So my intention was to try and help those who would like it done or who might not have heard about the Gearbox SB. Rotax flips the bill. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=168716#168716

Thanks, Vic Vic, The relative air Mike was referring to is the "sideways" air, not up or down. Here's what he meant.....assuming no wind, calm air, level flight. Okay? Now, pretend you have a long piece of yarn taped to the leading edge of the wing, on top, blowing in the wind. In our situation, it is straight back. Now, swing that yarn to the left 15 degrees, that's a VG angle. Swing it to the right 15 degrees, that's the other VG angle. If it were me that was placing VG's on a wing, I would imagine making a template, for absolutely gnat's hiney perfect placement, would be a good idea. Hi Mike, I suspect you will have to go and register as an "Expereimental, Amatuer Built" category. Contact the EAA for the latest poop as to how to.
