Mike: I will look through all the worthless sheets of paper they gave me but I don't rember seeing anything like what your needing. If you need a stack of paper saying quality control on it, and nothing else, than I've have at lease 40 pages of that. Back to Kolb business. The FS is about ready to go. I need suggestions as to what I'm missing or need. First, wheel chocks for a plane with no brakes. Ideas, anyone? I was thinking of a couple of pieces of 2 x 4, with a rope to pull them out. I also need an idea for a very light weight gap seal. I e-mailed TNK without knowing they were closed, so no answer yet. I have oil, cans, and MR funnel, a regular funnel, tools, and spare bolts, pins, clips, and safety wire. I have a box to stand on for fueling. I have tie-downs and rope. I have a bike pump. What can anybody suggest before I transport for taxi testing? Bill Sullivan FS/KX/447 Windsor Locks, Ct.

How highly stressed is the leading edge tube on a Kolb? Tonight I noticed that there's a dent in the leading edge of my UltraStar. It's old, I don't know how I never noticed it before, but it's maybe 1/8" deep and maybe 1 inch by 1 inches. I peeled the old repair patch off of it and looked at the tube underneath... no sharp bent edges, no cracking or anything. Its right at the first full rib inboard of the lift strut attach point, and (as far as I can tell by looking in from the wing root) no problem with the rib. The leading edge is still straight, except for the dent. Should I be concerned? Is there a good way to reinforce it without replacing the entire leading edge tube (a major job)? -Dana -- Sex in a Volkswagen = Farfergnookie.

Chocks on a rope are a good idea, but something bigger than 2X4... you want enough to hold the plane during a full power runup and engine testing. And consider brakes... I'm very happy with the Free Bird brakes on my US. > I also need an idea for a very light weight gap seal. I e-mailed TNK > without knowing they were closed, so no answer yet. Do you have a wingtip support for when you set the plane up? I don't know about your plane, but on the US you can't set the wingtip on the ground with the rear spar pin installed (would be the front spar on yours), so it needs a prop. -Dana -- Sex in a Volkswagen = Farfergnookie.

Bill Rags - something always needs wiping. Paper towels in pocket a good idea too. Small long-nose vice-grips. Maybe a can of instant tire- inflator if you get a flat 'out there'. And a full wallet if you can manage it. Cheap-but-good chocks can be made from two pine 2x4's nailed & glued together & then bandsawed to shape of tire. I used some plastic chocks that fit front & rear of tires, bungee'd together, for years. Don't know who made them but they never showed any wear. A milk crate makes a good stand-on box that holds a lot of gear. Happy almost-flying! On Apr 10, 2008, at 9:10 PM, william sullivan wrote: > Back to Kolb business. The FS is about ready to go. Dana- For a wing support, I have an old screw and spring adjustable shower curtain rod. It extends one handed, and collapses the same way. If I get the wing in the right spot I don't need it. The FS wing can be installed without it, but it is handy. Bill Sullivan FS/KX/447 Windsor Locks, Ct.

Of yearlings, we like to call them "yearlings" since they've been flying about a year and ain't dead yet - but you don't really want to fly to close behind one, as they tend to have miscellaneous parts fall off their planes all the way to Florida, (mostly small stuff, like doors and muffler springs) - things like that - nothing that you really need. They're still learning what "safety wire" is all about. We left a trail we could follow back to Georgia. Works as good as bread crumbs or an oil leak. BTW - you can get $20 for a muffler spring about halfway there - supply & demand. >I have a box to stand on for fueling. I have tie-downs and rope. Dana- I think I can do the gap seal OK, but the weight is creeping up again- no weight allowance for brakes. I have been looking at the exhaust system and wondering if there is a way to trim weight there. Does anyone know if it would affect the back pressure or engine temperature if I could find or make a lighter muffler? Also, the 447 tailpipe turns up as it leaves the muffler. Why? Noise? It could be cut off, and save a chunk of weight. Before I transport, I will warm it up and use a digital thermometer on various spots on the exhaust before getting creative. Bill Sullivan FS/KX/447

it will work on that leading edge tube the expander is only 1"OD your leading edge tube on a KOLB is big enough even with rivets in it and if you hang the leading edge down as in the folded position and a hand full of extensions you could take the dent out or just not worry about it again Just a suggestion Success comes in Cans Not Cants Ellery in Maine do not archive In a message dated 4/10/2008 10:02:47 P.M. Flew again tonight. I don't think it's slipping. Static rpm is indeed 6500, which is correct according to the Cuuyna manual, if not the US manual (which says 6200-6300). Anybody know what the redrive ratio is? At 3000 engine rpm I have 1400 prop rpm which is 2.14:1; same at 6000/2800; at 6500 prop is 3000 which works out to 2.17, I think the difference is within the accuracy of my old analog Heathkit optical tach. I didn't fly out of the traffic pattern tonight so I didn't have a chance to let it settle down at cruise at other rpm's. I _do_ get a cyclic humming that others have mentioned, a kind of mmmm...mmmmm...mmmmm, about a 1 second period, almost like a twin with a "beat" when the engines aren't quite synched. Could be an interplay between exhaust pulses and an odd prop ratio. -Dana -- Sex in a Volkswagen = Farfergnookie.

I know that _I_ didn't do it, so it must predate my ownership of the plane. -Dana -- Sex in a Volkswagen = Farfergnookie.

In case the "word doc) instructions didn't come thru ------------------------------------------------ WING GAP SEAL See drawing sheet 44. In your kit are four 1/2"x5/8"x30" sheet metal angles. Clamp two of these together with approximately 0.032 gap between the 1/2" legs and drill #30 holes with 1" spacing starting from one end for 16". Then cut metal to each of the holes so channels can be contoured to the wing. Drill and install channels with 2" spacing to IB side of IB wing ribs with 1/8" rivets. Lay 0.020 sheet metal on top of wings and mark along each channel (I think it is 6061 aluminum 'thin, but kind of stiff). Add approximately 1/2" to each side of these marks and cut (You don=92t have to get too tight of a fit here). Now cut a section of 1 112" tubing to fit between wing LE tubes. Hold tube in position and slide gap seal LE on tube and rivet in place. Cut a 1" long piece of 1 1/2" aluminum tube. Then cut out 1/4" gap, as you did making rear spar splices. Slide this piece into wing LE tube with Epoxy applied and use sheet metal screws to attach the forward corners of gap seal to wing LE tubes. The doubler makes a better thread for the sheet metal screws(drill larger hole in gap seal for screw). I did mine a little different here and just used one tube over the ends of the LE tubes that stick out about 2 inches on my plane.

I wouldn't mess with the exhaust, the tuning may or may not be affected but exhausts have come a long way from the days when they failed all the time and went through props... I think I'd look elsewhere for weight reduction. How close are you? -Dana -- Help Wanted: Telepath. You know where to apply.

Dana- I have about an 18" long 3/8" extension you can borrow, but no dent expander. I could meet you and pass it over. Possums- how heavy is that gap seal? also, I have to fuel from the top- I have the modified 10 gallon tank with the BRS mounted under it, firing through the fabric. I'll check it if you want. But if your going Part 103 - you can't afford 2 lbs.

I have a bunch of extensions (though not 8' worth!) and an expander... though I imagine that the dent is as is no weaker than a dent subjected to the added fatigue of rebending it back straight again. -Dana do not archive -- Help Wanted: Telepath. Bill, if I remember, I'll bring a scale and weigh my own gap seal when I stop at Goodspeed on Saturday (weather looks crappy but everybody goes up there on Saturday mornings anyway... c'mon down and meet some other Kolb drivers). -Dana At 10:53 PM 4/10/2008, possums wrote: > > >> >>Possums- how heavy is that gap seal? also, I have to fuel from the top- I >>have the modified 10 gallon tank with the BRS mounted under it, firing >>through the fabric. >> >> Bill Sullivan > >I probably weighs about 1 or 2 pounds max - with the sound insulation ?? >I'll check it if you want. >But if your going Part 103 - you can't afford 2 lbs. -- Help Wanted: Telepath. Lonesome Bill, why would you bail them out. Couldn't you use a nice peaceful vacation? ---------------------- Gee, it's awful quiet here on the List with all the kids in Florida on spring break. I think I'm getting empty nest syndrome. I hope they don't party too much. I'm short of bail money. do not archive
