I can safely say that an 80 crosswind at 12G18 (it didn't seem that bad when I took off) is TOO WINDY. Got down without breaking anything but they guys watching must have enjoyed the show! Good thing I had help folding it up again. -Dana -- I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use. -- Galileo Galilei

Anybody with an original Firestar, a KX version, or a Firefly want to grab their overall length for me? The TNK website no longer gives length. My Firestar KX measured out at 19' even, with a tail boom OAL of 12'. Ellery's FS was 13'. I'm still trying to identify this thing, and it gets more confusing each time I try. It is starting to look like an FS/KX built light for 103. Bill Sullivan FS/KX/447 Windsor Locks, Ct.

Dana- How much crosswind did you have? Obviously, enough to get your attention. Did you run out of rudder? How about added throttle? Bill Sullivan FS/KX/447 Windsor Locks, Ct.

Well, I wasn't taking measurements at the moment. :) Chester was due to windward of Goodspeed and just far enough away that the 12G18 would be arriving just as I landed, about 80 crosswind from the right... though Chester is up on the hilltop and Goodspeed is down in the river valley, so it was probably less, but more mechanical turbulence. The windsock was straight out at times, though, and I assume it's a 15 knot windsock like most. I flew final at idle but added a touch of throttle as I flared. I always run out of rudder trying to slip it... of course slips really don't do much good in an US, but I was a bit high and wanted to do everything possible to get it on the ground and not have to go around again. Biggest problem was running out of aileron, the US rolls pretty slow and I was back and forth against the stops keeping the wings level on final. The actual touchdown was almost an anticlimax (though far from the smoothest I've ever made!) and it took a jab of left brake to keep it on the runway. -Dana -- Software isn't released, it's allowed to escape.

The leading edge of a Kolb wing is not acting as a spar as it is on many other types of planes. On a Quicksilver, a dent there would be very bad... On a Kolb, what you describe sounds like no problem at all. Mike -------- "NO FEAR" - If you have no fear you did not go as fast as you could have !!! A composite prop is better than wood in every way. Much stronger, more efficient, better performance, and will keep its balance better. I would not have used a wood prop even if they were giving them away for free. If you get a composite, the warp drive props are the strongest, with the nickel leading edge, now its not just tape, its nickel implanted into the edge. I also fly a Powerfin, which is great, not as strong as the warp, but with the soft leading edge tape, it does not wear on the leading edge at all.
