An "old guy"? hmmmm, is there any other kind of Kolb owner? -Or
flyer for that matter.
It doesn't look good for the sport when everyone is 60+
It can't solely be a matter of affordability because I see lots of
$6000+ snowmobiles,
4 wheelers, not to mention those ridiculous $$$$$$ boats.

This comes up regularly on the PPG forums... you'd think that would be a
young person's sport, but the average participant is 40-60. It's because
flying (of any kind) doesn't mix well with a young man's primary interests
(women and beer).

Here are some more funny ones I saw on another forum. Where do you find this stuff?
After every flight, UPS pilots fill out a form called a "gripe sheet, which tells
mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems,
document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets
before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense
of humor. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by UPS pilots
(marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance
engineers.
By the way, UPS is the only major airline that has never, ever, had an accident.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.
P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.
P: Something loose in cockpit
S: Something tightened in cockpit
P: Dead bugs on windshield.
S: Live bugs on back-order.
P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.
P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.
P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to more believable level.
P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That's what friction locks are for.
P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.
P: Suspected crack in windshield.
S: Suspect you're right.
P: Number 3 engine missing.
S: Engine found on right wing after brief search.
P: Aircraft handles funny.
S: Aircraft warned to: straighten up, fly right, and be serious.
P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.
P: Mouse in cockpit.
S: Cat installed.
P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a child pounding on something
with a hammer.
S: Took hammer away from child.
Airline cabin announcements
All too rarely, airline attendants make an effort to make the in flight "safety
lecture" and announcements a bit more entertaining. Here are some real examples
that have been heard or reported:
1. On a Southwest flight 245 (SW has no assigned seating, you just sit where you
want) passengers were apparently having a hard time choosing, when a flight
attendant announced, "People, people we're not picking out furniture here, find
a seat and get in it!"
2. On a Continental Flight with a very "senior" flight attendant crew, the pilot
said, "Ladies and gentlemen, we've reached cruising altitude and will be turning
down the cabin lights. This is for your comfort and to enhance the appearance
of your flight attendants."
3. On landing, the stewardess said, "Please be sure to take all of your belongings.
If you're going to leave anything, please make sure it's something we'd like
to have.
4. "There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 4 ways out of
this airplane"
5. "Thank you for flying Delta Business Express. We hope you enjoyed giving us
the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride."
6. As the plane landed and was coming to a stop at Ronald Reagan, a lone voice
came over the loudspeaker: "Whoa, big fella. WHOA!"
7. After a particularly rough landing during thunderstorms in Memphis, a flight
attendant on a Northwest flight announced, "Please take care when opening the
overhead compartments because, after a landing like that, sure as hell everything
has shifted."
8. >From a Southwest Airlines employee: "Welcome aboard Southwest Flight 245 to
Tampa.. To operate your seat belt, insert the metal tab into the buckle, and
pull tight. It works just like every other seat belt; and, if you don't know how
to operate one, you probably shouldn't be out in public unsupervised."
9. "In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, masks will descend from the
ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your face. If you have
a small child traveling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs.
If you are traveling with more than one small child, pick your favorite."
10. "Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but we'll
try to have them fixed before we arrive. Thank you, and remember, nobody loves
you, or your money, more than Southwest Airlines."
11. "Your seat cushions can be used for flotation; and, in the event of an emergency
water landing, please paddle to shore and take them with our compliments."
12. "As you exit the plane, make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything
left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants. Please do
not leave children or spouses."
13. And from the pilot during his welcome message: "Delta Airlines is pleased to
have some of the best flight attendants in the industry. Unfortunately, none
of them are on this flight!"
14. Heard on Southwest Airlines just after a very hard landing in Salt Lake City
the flight attendant came on the intercom and said, "That was quite a bump,
and I know what y'all are thinking. I'm here to tell you it wasn't the airline's
fault, it wasn't the pilot's fault, it wasn't the flight attendant's fault,
it was the asphalt."
15. Overheard on an American Airlines flight into Amarillo, Texas, on a particularly
windy and bumpy day: During the final approach, the Captain was really having
to fight it. After an extremely hard landing, the Flight Attendant said,
"Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Amarillo. Please remain in your seats with
your seat belts fastened while the Captain taxis what's left of our airplane to
the gate!"
16. Another flight attendant's comment on a less than perfect landing: "We ask
you to please remain seated as Captain Kangaroo bounces us to the terminal."
17. An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship
into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first
officer to stand at the door while the Passengers exited, smile, and give
them a "Thanks for flying our airline." He said that, in light of his bad landing,
he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone
would have a smart comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for a little
old lady walking with a cane. She said, "Sir, do you mind if I ask you a
question?" "Why, no, Ma'am," said the pilot. "What is it?" The little old lady
said, "Did we land, or were we shot down?"
18. After a real crusher of a landing in Phoenix, the attendant came on with, "Ladies
and Gentlemen, please remain in your seats until Capt. Crash and the Crew
have brought the aircraft to a screeching halt against the gate. And, once
the tire smoke has cleared and the warning bells are silenced, we'll open the
door and you can pick your way through the wreckage to the terminal."
19. Part of a flight attendant's arrival announcement: "We'd like to thank you
folks for flying with us today. And, the next time you get the insane urge to
go blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal tube, we hope you'll think
of US Airways."
20. Heard on a Southwest Airline flight. "Ladies and gentlemen, if you wish to
smoke, the smoking section on this airplane is on the wing and if you can light
'em, you can smoke 'em."
21. A plane was taking off from KennedyAirport. After it reached a comfortable
cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom, "Ladies
and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to Flight Number 293, nonstop
from New York to los Angeles. The weather ahead is good and, therefore,
we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax... OH,
MY GOD!" Silence followed, and after a few minutes, the captain came back on the
intercom and said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you earlier.
While I was talking to you, the flight attendant accidentally spilled a
cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!" A passenger
in Coach yelled, "That's nothing. You should see the back of mine."
Congratulations. Well done! I would have been a surprised if you hadn't won.
Steve showed super human restraint all week. He had do not touch signs on
the plane but everyone did. About 100 times a day he wiped the finger prints
off the mirror finish of the floats.
I figured the composite might hold up better with tape.
Even the tape on my wood prop is helping a lot but its old and needs to be replaced
and since it does not go all the way to the tips the tips are being worn
down.
I'm seriously considering a replacement composite prop now.
I'll could probably even sell the old wood one to some yuppies for $100 who want
to decorate the hubbies den or make a clock out of it. [Laughing]
Well... me too. I just don't often bring either one to the airport... :)
Don't laugh, I've seen Cub sized Sensenich props stamped "unairworthy" with
"antique propeller" tags on them at flea markets priced at $800 when a
brand new airworthy prop was selling for under $500.
On the age thing...
I started building my Firestar when I was 25. Finished it when 32 and still flying
it at 41. I hope to still be flying it when I am 60.
Subject: | Prop Strike- Warps can take a beating, keep on ticking! |
Hello Group,
Hope everyone had fun at Sun-n-Fun! I had another experience yesterday. Suffered
a prop strike to my Warp Drive Prop during an after work, late evening flight.
I keep learning the hard way!
I was doing a little slow flight, lazy eights. While I was straight and level.
I remember noticing just a slight pitch(tone) change. No vibration, just a little
different something. Actually thought is in my ANR headsets. Getting late
so I decide that time to land. No sense of urgency.
Upon landing and shutdown, I have been drilled by John W and John H to square away
my prop. It is a habit now. If you fly with them enough, they will get you
into the habit. That is when I noticed the prop had been struck.
I spent the next hour and a half going over the engine trying to figure what came
loose to cause the problem. Couldn't find a thing. Gave up when it got too
dark.
I found it when I pushed the plane back into the hangar. I installed inspection
plates in the fabric at key places in the wing. One at the drag strut connection,
the spar connection and at the end of the wing for inspection purposes.
The inspection plate at the drag strut connection was missing.
So now I knew the culprit. Nearly 400 hours and never had the inspection plates
even move. Not sure why now.
This is obvious now, but another "should have known that stupid" lesson. I installed
my inspection plates with the clips parallel to the airstream. This allows
the inspection plate to be pushed to the rear and the clip coming out in
the front. So now I've turned all my inspection plates so the clips are perpendicular
to the airstream. They will only get tighter if they move to the rear.
I think I'm going to look into a way to safety wire too. At least the ones
in the prop area.
Anyway, this is the second prop strike I've experienced. The first was with an
IVO on the way from Kitty Hawk to the 2003 TNK Homecoming. I never said I was
any good at this stuff. Learned a lot, mostly from mistakes. The IVO strike
was a lot more vibration with a long way to go. It was also minor damage to
the blade compared to this one. I think I might have lost a good chunk of the
IVO blade vs what happened to the WARP. I never really noticed anything with
the WARP.
Just sharing so others can learn from my mistakes and avoid them.
Waiting for the Warp guys to get back from Sun-n-Fun to see about a repair or replace.
Also considering asking them if they can trim the blades from 72" to
70". Want to get on the good side of the noise and mass inertia issues if possible.
At first I was disgusted and disappointed about the trouble and expense of this
incident. You have to put this in perspective. There are not many propellers
on GA planes that can be damaged and repaired/replaced for around $200. Also,
I have gained enough wisdom to know that if I use something enough, it will
wear out, break, or need maintenance. I like flying my plane and this is just
part of the game. Kolbs fit my budget and flying style to a "T".
Living the Dream, the hard way! But still having a blast.
--------
Thanks too much,
John Bickham
River is getting kinda high. The ferry is shutdown. The inner levee at Angola
State Pen is breached. The Bonnet Carre spillway above New Orleans has been
opened. The creek behind the camp/FBO has risen due to back water.
Everything is fine now. Cutting grass as usual. Everything will be OK if we don't
get a stalled front that just sits here and rains for a couple of days.
There is nowhere for the water to go.
It would be greatly appreciated if you guys up river can reduce your fluid intake
and flushes for a couple of weeks. [Wink]
Thanks too much,
Hi Kolbers,
I just wanted to remind anyone who hasn't
completed their 2007 1040 tax forms that a credit
is available for fuel taxes paid for our little
airplanes.
Get Federal form 4136. If you live in Minnesota
the state form is PDR-1 AV. Other states may
have similar programs.
If you missed out this year you can file an
amended return if the money is enough or just
keep track of gallons for 2008. The federales
only ask how many gallons. Minnesota, the state
where nothing is allowed, requires the original
receipts with the form. Between the state and
federal my 2007 refund and credit totaled over
$100.00.
Hi Grant:
Just got home from Lakeland. Great time with the gang, down there, and all
the Kolb guys that showed up to visit.
Sorry about your list of stuff, but I don't think I can use any of it to
improve my Kolb MKIII or the flying of it.
Thanks anyway,
Welcome back, John.
On my Firestar, the fuel line comes up to an in line fuel filter (see through)
that is mounted at about a 45 degree angle. When running, it always has a large
air bubble in it. Should this be bled out, or re-mounted? It goes from there
to the Mikuni pump, and then loops over the top of the carb horn and back down.
I have not run full throttle yet, and don't know what it will do in an attitude
change. Seems to run alright on the ground.
There's always air in the top of my fuel filter. It doesn't seem to do any
harm. As long as there are no bubbles moving through the fuel line to the
carburetor at full throttle, you should be fine.
Thanks Bill S:
That seems to be the norm. Mine always did that on the Kolbs, Onan
Dana- I saw a lot of agitation in the filter, but didn't get close enough to
look at the line to the carb. It's green, and I saw the word "urethane" on it.
I'll put a box in front of the wing so I can see it.
The good news is that my hand cut prop extension tracked true, with no vibration.
it was cut with a hack saw, then I ground the high spots off with a 4"
hand grinder. I then put some coarse sandpaper on flat concrete and rubbed the
part on it while rotating. My vernier says it is true to as close as I can read
it, and the prop blades track absolutely the same. Not bad for hand work. I
wish I had a lathe.
I bought 2 plastic wheel chocks from the auto parts store for $6.44. I drilled
them for a rope, so I can pull them out from the seat.
Be aware of the 8mm head bolts that hold the muffler bracket. They can come loose
too. I bought ones with drilled heads so I can wire them down. The original
bolts with the kit didn't have drilled heads.
Usually the urethane tubing is blue, and turns green when it gets old. If
yours is green and not transparent enough to see through, you might want to
replace it. Usually you'll see a bunch of bubbles at first as most of the
air is pulled out of the filter, but they disappear and some air is still
there.
Hi All,
The 6th Annual Kolb Gathering at Monument Valley is just a month away on 16-18
May 2008.
Yes, it is "Unplanned and Unorganized", but we seem to have a good time.
Here is the link for the facilities if you need it:
http://www.gouldings.com/english/index.htm
Submit your photo from past Monument Valley trips to be judged here for the award
of "Best MV Kolb Photo". The only requirement is it has to be taken by someone
flying or building or from a Kolb or of Kolbers. Please submit photos that
are at least 600 pixels wide but not more than 2000 pixels wide.
To get things going, here is my submission:
