When I referred to myself as a "broadband thief" my intentions were: A. To poke a fun at myself, so to avoid insulting you by seeming to be pontificating from on high... (Perhaps I should ask JetPilot to compose my next submission...) B. To avoid a longwinded explanation of why the speed of my internet connection varies so greatly. As boring as it may seem, I am stealing bandwidth from no one. My intentions in opening this thread were: A. To share with others who suffer with a slow connection, the technique I use to avoid having my computer hang up while downloading unwanted photos. B. To give courage to those who wish to post photos to the list... When complaints are raised about photos there is a chilling effect... Members not wanting to appear arrogant or inconsiderate start requesting that photos and data be sent to them "off list", depriving the rest of the members (and lurkers) of the list the chance to access potentially valuable information. I believe the intention of this list is to freely exchange our information and experiences for the benefit of all who wish to access it. I believe that the use of thumbnails and photos is one of the finest tools we have at hand. It was never my intent to lecture, insult or belittle you. If you feel that I have, I apologize... I know you are an intelligent person because you drive a FireFly, the finest aircraft on this list (not looking for an argument from all those "untralight wann-a-bees" (ultra-fats) out there). Yesterday I flew to a nearby airport that rarely sees traffic and did an overhead approach from about 1800 feet AGL, with the engine off and prop stopped. The factory (Allegro) says that best glide speed is 70 mph so I set up a glide at that IAS, made two complete 360 degree circles and saw that I was going to be a bit high when crossing the threshold and added full flaps, touching down around mid-field. I've done engine off, prop stopped glides before but only on final. What amazed me is the large difference in descent rate with prop stopped compared to idle power glide under same conditions. At idle power the descent rate is 400 fpm but at the same speed with prop stopped it was 700 fpm. Moral of the story, as some have urged on this list before, is that you don't really know how an airplane will perform with the engine and prop stopped until you test it in a safe environment. The advertised glide ratio for the Allegro is 12 to 1 but my testing showed it to be about 8 to 1 (70 IAS on my ASI is about 65 mph TAS). I suspect it will better at higher speeds but won't know for sure until I test it again. BTW, with idle power 400 fpm yields about 14 to 1 glide ratio. I will do this test at various glide speeds with the FS when I finish the rebuild. Obviously, at idle power some thrust (or a lot less drag) is being produced than with prop stopped. There is a theoretical prop/engine rpm that equates to zero thrust for each glide speed and prop ptich. For those interested, I've attached a spreadsheet that calculates this theoretical prop/engine rpm for a given prop pitch and glide speed. Any rpm below this zero thrust rpm will result in more drag and any rpm above this zero thrust rpm will net some thrust. -------- Thom Riddle N221FA Allegro 2000 912UL N197BG FS1/447 -------------------- Believe nothing, no matter where you read it or who has said it, not even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. - Buddha Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=179215#179215 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/zero_thrust_rpm_calculator_795.xls ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 02:23:00 PM PST US From: Mike Welch Subject: RE: Kolb-List: Wheel pants Bill, There were quite a few posts recently regarding mounting wheel pants. I finally made it back into the air today. Two 15 minutes circuits. One b-----y terrible landing and one reasonable one. I crashed the plane 21/07/06 Seeems a long time ago. What looked at first as just a wing rebuild escalated into a new cage and consequent total replacement of all connections and fittings. In fact everything is new except the boom and the tail feathers. The PFA insisted on treating the rebuilt plane as new. Which it was I suppose. By the time the plane was rebuilt and checked out my flying license had expired. Finally got the plane and myself signed off just before Christmas. The check flight was the first time I had flown since the accident. Since then, weather, holidays, weather, weather has kept me confined to taxy trials. Today was grey but the wind was around 5 mph and cloudbase was around 1800 ft. I checked and found that I had only managed about 5 hours in the Kolb before the crunch so I was hardly what you call experienced. Anyway, with a gulp and a little prayer that the various changes of C of G I had made were going to pan out OK away we went. Off the ground easily a slightly lumpy climb out, particularly when taking off the flap (that is a terrible system) and a few minutes trimming and doing a few fairly sedate turns, round the circuit and into an awful landing. As the first solo landing since July `06 I don`t suppose it was really that bad. Another circuit and a much better landing and I tucked her away and rushed off to a Rotary lunch. Away again all next week so next weekend is the next opportunity but anyway I have broken my duck. Terry - FireFly #95 ________________________________ Message 16 ____________________________________ Time: 08:41:43 PM PST US From: TK Subject: Kolb-List: Internet connection vs. photos Henry, Thank you for the response! I do agree that intentions are not always clear on the internet. My intentions were to have the other members of this list be more considerate of those without the newest and fastest servers available. I thought I had detected a condescending note in some of the post about those with limited access to the Kolb List and their ability to deal with large format pictures. Ergo my post! I live in a beautiful place called Lancaster County, PA where we have many Amish ( Plain people) amongst us. We "English" have to tolerate their driving their horse and buggy vehicles on our roads and there are many that complain loudly about the inconvenience it causes them. To the Amish, even a bicycle is a fast moving object much lest our cars. The benefit of having them among us far out weighs the inconvenience they cause on the roadways! Those of us who live with them have learn to be tolerant of their choice of life style and give them due respect on the roads which sometimes causes delay and safety hazards. I cannot access high speed even if I wanted to. The nearest cable line is 1-1/2 miles away and "they" won't consider running the line my way. Not enough houses, so they say. I also live on the North side of a hill in the woods which precludes satellite reception. All I was asking for is some reasonable consideration from the others on the Kolb List. John W. posting of JPG.s of the Monument Valley group is not a problem and much appreciated which I tried to relayed to him. Others could limit the size of their postings pixtel wise. When I joined the Kolb List many years ago it was a more friendly place than lately. Seems ever year there is a new comer with an attitude, one of which you alluded to in your last post. Hopefully there is room on the list for those of us that don't have the latest high speed capabilities that many enjoy. Hope you allow room on the road for us also!! I do know how to limit the size of incoming mail, I just didn't want to be relegated to the back of the bus on this list. Courtesy goes a long way in all endeavors!!! Lastly, I do agree with your analysis of the FireFly being one of Homer's and Dennis Souder's best creations. Hope to have to opportunity to meet you one day. Any chance of your coming to the Father's Day fly-in at Homer's this year?
