I just got my airplane back together finally. It was a long road. All I intended to do was replace a broken stringer and wound up replacing the stringer, the windshield, instrument panel and fuel tank. I found two rotted steel tubes on the cage which were repaired. Then recover and repaint the cage and fuselage tube. The fuel tank I had ordered was going to hold 8 gals but since the tank doesn't sit level it only hold a little over 7 gals before in starts coming out of the filler neck. I may be able to put a hose over the neck if I ever want to fill it past 7 gals. I've attached a pic here but you can see some better ones at my web site. http://kolbfirestar.googlepages.com/myplane -------- Scott Olendorf Original Firestar, Rotax 447, Powerfin prop Schenectady, NY http://KolbFirestar.googlepages.com Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=179571#179571 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/rebuild1_109.jpg

Kolb people, I thought I'd share a couple of photos of my wing's "droop tip project". Before anyone comments, if you can see it in the picture, so can I! Keep in mind, these items you are looking at are "Plugs"! These are the mock-ups you make, to be able to make a mold around them. Once your mold is made, these will likely get destroyed. A couple of pointers. I am NOT happy with my choice of materials. The foam/joint compound worked okay for a basic shape, but I encountered all kinds of crap trying to come up with a truely decently smooth finished set of plugs. IF I were to do it again, I would choose a different method to come up with finished shapes. I have a few spots (bumps) that I just cannot seem to fix. I think I've work on them for two days. No matter what I do, the locations continue to bulge! Screw it, I'll fix the problem in the molds! The first few photos deal with the shaping portion. I think it is the first photo that shows how I made Magic Marker lines to show the contour lines. The last couple reflect the PVA coating on the right tip. (The left one already has the PVA coating, and two coats of gel coat). Remember, the order of events are: shape the item, paint it to achieve a smooth finish, release wax (2-3 coats), then PVA (2 coats), then 3 coats of gel coat epoxy, followed by 5-6 layers of glass/epoxy resin. This creates your mold. Wait a day, and then pop it it out, and repeat the process in reverse, for your finished project.....wax, PVA, gel coat, 3-4 layers of glass/resin, wait a day...pop out finished gel coated item!! Oh BTW, this a hellava lot of work!! Much easier to buy them, but like I said, I need them now, not later. Besides, it's a lot of fun, about as much fun as digging a septic system by hand! (I'd rather being putting Poly Fiber on my wings.) Sorry if these photos are hard on the dial-up folks. I only know much to attach these photos like this. Subject: More droop tip photos
Kolb People, Some more pics to look at. Note on photo #11 the black line on the rough one. That represents the droop tip edge cut line. You'll also notice on photo #01 the red line representing the front curve. To achieve a fairly simetrical set of tips, I drew a red line between them on the table. Each tip was set EXACTLY 3" back (as measured parallel to the bottom of the wing rib). I then placed a ridged piece of aluminum plate right in the center, standing as a "wall" between them. (If you look closely in photo #01 you can see the aluminum straight-edge separating the two tips). I shaped and shaped and shaped the first one, until I was satisfied with it's profile, put it back on the table, and transferred the dimensions to the rough one. One real nice feature of using laminated foam is that the white layer lines will be the same, if you've done a good job being simetrical. (as seen in photo #02, but note the top layer is one 2" thick foam, rather than two 1" thick foam layers) As a side by side comparison, they are as gnat's ass close as I care about. One last thing to note, for those that have ANY intention of actually making their own droop tips. If you'll notice on those close-up photos of the Yellow Xtra that David took, the factory tips allow for the captured air to slip past the ailerons. Although these nice droop tips do appear to "catch" the air trying to escape the underside of the wing on it's outer edge (and that is good), it appears to me this style will allow that air to just exit the rear of the wing, but not affect the ailerons. My style will be a two piece tip, where the front piece attaches to the main wing, as usual, and the rear piece attaches to the aileron, becoming an extension of the droop tip all the way to the rear of the wing. This style will insure that all the captured air a) remains under the wing, and b) all that capured air will also affect the aileron, before exiting the wing. This aileron droop tip extension will also incorporate the aileron's balance spade. This NOT meant to be a criticism of the Kolb droop tip on the new Xtra. Their style is fine for what they wanted it to do, and they do make the plane look awesome. It definitely augments the wing's performence. I am simply pointing out that since I have to build my own, I am incorporating "additional" features. That's all. Mike Welch PS. I have more photos, if anyone wants to see them, email me directly. --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

Mike, commendations for the ambition and nice work. I'm too lazy to make molds for just one application. Rude and crude is my way. I wanted a fairing for that ugly radiator sticking up front. First bang out a metal shell. I made it just a little too snug so some amendments had to be banged out. Then epoxy foam board externally. File to shape. Epoxy glass externally using the hi tek garbage bag and duct tape method. It will take SOME bondo and sanding to finish for paint but ought to look better than before and cut some drag. They supposedly had a 1 rotor in the single-seat, but it was still on the roof of their trailer when I visited. The guy I talked to knew very little about the engine, & not much more about a/c design (he tried to tell me that the 2-seat with 120 HP was good for up to a 1000 hp V8 (not a typo) that would 'blow away anything else out there'. The 1 rotor engine might be worthy of consideration for UL type planes; it's around 60 hp & should be almost as light as a 2 stroke with the same or slightly better fuel burn. I tried talking to the Rotomax people, but the only guy in the tent at the time was their gyro pilot. All he knew was that the 2 rotor made plenty of power for the 2 seat gyro he flew. The engines are descended from the OMC snowmobile/outboard rotaries. Charlie

Kolb guys, On our recent discussion of mounting wheel pants, someone emailed a photo of their wheel pant/mount. For the life of me, I can't find that photo. (I thought Scott did it, IIRC). A few days ago our fellow Kolber Bill Futtrell asked if anyone has any suggestions on mounting wheel pants. Although I forwarded my post, I sure would like to forward that other photo from "whomever". My set-up was copied from my Cessna. To be honest, I liked the other mount better. If you would send Bill a copy of your wheel pant, Im sure he'd appreciate it. send it to: bill_joe@bellsouth.net Mike Welch Do Not Archive --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo!
