Brother Bob,
Yeah, I gotta make some kind of radiator shroud, combination engine cowling,
too.
My plan is to have it begin at the leading edge of the wing, and flair back toward
the
sides of the engine. I haven't spent too much time thinking about the specifics,
but I kinda know what I want....I think mine is referred to as a "nacelle".
(like Uncle Craig's)
Mine will have two inlets. The usual for the radiator, and the other other
one is for the air inlet for the turbo ducting. Oh, BTW, in one of my droop
tip photos you can see my complete engine package sitting under my work bench.
Jeesh!! I can't wait until the day I can bolt it back on, 'cause that'll mean
the fuselage is finish!
Gotta get to work on those tips, adios!!

Mike, commendations for the ambition and nice work. I'm too lazy to

Rude and crude is my way. I wanted a fairing for that ugly radiator
sticking up front. First bang out a metal
shell. I made it just a little too snug so some amendments had to be
banged out. Then epoxy foam board
externally. File to shape. Epoxy glass externally using the hi tek
garbage bag and duct tape method.
It will take SOME bondo and sanding to finish for paint but ought to
look better than before and cut some drag.

Subject: | April 15 Spot Pilot NPRM |
Have any of you taken a close look at the April 15
Sport Pilot NPRM changes? Any thoughts on any of the
22 proposed changes?
I'll be really glad about the change to allow us to
fly 2000' AGL, even if that takes us above 10,000'.
The biggest omission that I see - no mention of
allowing the use of ELSAs as trainers. In my area
(northwest Oregon and southwest Washington) there are
no longer any flight instructors for fixed wing ELSAs,
formerly "fat" ultralights. That means that folks who
are intrigued by Hawks, Quicksilvers, Kolbs,
Challengers, etc. have no where to go to get flight
training...unless they travel 4+ hours.
Any other thoughts about any of these proposed
changes?

Mike, I installed one of those gadgets last year to help reduce the
vibes on my plane.
I figured it wouldn't harm anything. It did reduce symptoms some.
Mine are in the category
of what John Hauck calls rum rum, low freq, in and out resonance.
No doubt you will get (good) advice to do another prop balance, as
should I.
If you turn the device in rotation you can hear what sounds like
pellets moving inside.
Sure doesn't sound like mercury but I could be wrong.
Anyone else with experience or knowledge with this?

Mike,
I had a similar experience with my 2- blade IVO. I never figured
it out until I did a de-carbon. When I took off my prop the little ear on
the cam of one blade had broken off and the pitch on that blade was different
than the good blade. You might want to check that out if you havent. I
ordered a new blade with the knurled plates and have had no more problems.

Bob,
Mine also sounds like pellets inside instead of mercury. I took it off a
while back to see if there was a differance and before I got to the runway I
turned around and went back to the hanger to put it back on.

Subject: | Re: April 15 Spot Pilot NPRM |
Hi Arty and All,
You made me go and read the NPRM. It looks like a very good attempt to clean up
FAR Part 61 reference Sport Pilots and Sport Pilot Instructors.
You bring up a good point about the ELSA: "The biggest omission that I see - no
mention of allowing the use of ELSAs as trainers."
If you read these two FAR sections, you will see that we have never been able to
use any aircraft with an "Experimental" certificate for compensation or hire.
That doesn't limit the use of them for training, just being able to charge for
it.
21.191 Experimental certificates.
91.319 Aircraft having experimental certificates: Operating limitations.
Anyone can petition their local FAA FSDO for a Letter of Authorization to allow
their EAB or ELSA aircraft to perform Transition Type Training for compensation.
They still won't let you train for an initial issue certificate in an EAB
or ELSA that you rent from someone else.
What you need to do is find a skinny CFI to instruct in your aircraft and you can
pay with a lot of meals and a little money. If you furnish the aircraft, all
you need is that willing CFI to train you.
I went flying this evening in a clear, blue Texas sky, so I'm probably not thinking
straight.

Subject: | 50 foot paint job |
Hi,
Well I have finally breathed the last of the paint fumes again.
Perhaps this headache will finally go away. My mask leaks when I wear my
glasses and I can't see very well without them, therefore the 50 foot
paint job. Looks pretty good at 50, but the flaws show up when you get
closer. Not to mention its too darned dark in the hanger. What ever! It
is kinda straight and is recovered, and repainted and now it has wheels
and legs that will not let me down again. Not to say that I can't screw
it up but at least it won't be because a part let me down. Now I need to
get the instruments back in and hooked up so that I can do some tests
and find out how it performs with longer legs. I am sure happy with the
alignment this time. I set a bit of toe in on my last legs and when I
pulled it backwards out of the hanger they would spread and it was hard
to pull. Forward it caused the legs to stand up more. This time I set
them straight, and during the axle change found that the brake drums
were dragging on the backing plate for the shoes. Now it pushes both
directions so easy and seems to track straight as well. I had to really
push it to get the painting done. The weather here has been really iffy
at best. Just a few days every now and then that were warm enough to
paint. Today was about 75 so I really pushed the envelope a lot. There
was a high wind warning today as well, tomorrow will be the start of a
downward trend that will take us down to the 50's for a week or so.
Hopefully the weather will get it over with and be nice for a change.
