I got mine from SOPUS in Selkirk, NY. They wholesale but will sell direct if
I show up with cash.
It was a good price because there was no shipping cost.

I couldn't hear the engine, and I'd like to know what you're doing with the

Subject: | Firestar project |
My wife and I went to the first seasonal meeting of the Silver Wings Ultralight
club in Palmer, Mass. last week. Very friendly people, informative, and my
wife fell in love with the place. We rented a trailer and moved the plane up there
on Sunday. Ed Harvey (of this List) was there to give us a hand with the
unload and tie down. I wanted to move it ASAP to get opinions as to what I had
missed, and the first apparent thing is a slight negative dihedral on the right
wing. It was not obvious in the back yard. I may have the struts on the wrong
side, or have to make a correction. The plane looks a lot smaller out on the
field. Ed has a nice looking Firefly- he is the builder. We also got to see
a Mitchell Wing fly. From the ground it looked like I should have been holding
the kite string. Refresher lessons are in the works. We had to get the trailer
back, so we didn't hang around.
To any lurkers or Kolb owner wannabes- don't be shy. Everybody is very friendly
and helpful, and enthusiastic about the sport. They are more than willing
to offer tips and assistance. About 14 people showed up at the meeting, and i
believe about 35 people were notified about it.
My wife is more interested in something a little easier to get into than the
old Firestar, but she wants a little enclosure. She liked the looks of a Hurricane,
and the Mitchell. We will have to see Dana's Ultrastar- has anyone seen
a similar Kolb with a pod? She is looking forward to shopping for another plane.
Wx outlook poor this week, but I may be able to sneak up and do something about
the struts- if I have to adjust the length I can install the spare (streamlined
steel) ones to hold the wings up, and bring the round aluminum ones home.
I also have to do a full power run-up. I didn't want to do it in the back yard
and annoy the neighbors. I also want to burn up the gas in the tank on the
ground- taxi practice, maybe. The gas is months old, and too expensive to waste.

Good for you.
Did you get any hawk or falcon feathers in the paint?
Must be this Spring weather. I got some work done on my bird and have a
bit more tuning, maintenance, and cleanup to do before I am ready to fly
West.
Yesterday I replaced the original 912 tach, after 14 years and 2,500+
hours. It was worn out. Still operational, but the innards were worn
loose as a goose. The new tach is nice and smooth operating, with a
good dampening system. Did a tach check on the new one and it was right
on with my little GloBee prop tach check meter. I picked up the prop
tach from an RC dealer some years ago for about 25.00.
I also replaced an hour meter I purchased from Aircraft Spruce when I
installed the new 912ULS last year. It wasn't what I thought it was or
wanted but did not have time to get another. Darn thing was ugly, but
operated ok. I started a search for VDO hour meters and found one on
Ebay for 20.00. I took a few days to run it forward to 186 hours, then
stuck it in the MKIII. The new hour meter with Caterpiller yellow logo
looks great.
I haven't flown the MKIII since my return from London in March. It is
covered with barn dust and bug crap. The carpenter bees have been hard
at work trying to cut the hanger down. The 912 needs a carb sync and
the Warp Drive needs a little pitch removed. We had the prop set light
on the new factory MKIIIx. It climbed at 5400 and leveled out at 5500
rpm. After an oil and filter change, a little flight testing and pilot
reorientation, I'll be good to go.
Times a wasting. Two weeks until departure for MV.

Well I have finally breathed the last of the paint fumes again.

I had the same problem with the foam and adhesive. I used crack
insulating foam in a can for the adhesive to join things together and it
compresses when sanded. I ended up roughing it out and using sheet rock
joint compound to smooth over the low spots.

carried it for a while...I bought all of their stock so as to drive

supplier there and I was able to buy it for 36 bucks and change for
24 16 oz bottles...but that was a year and a half ago...Herb

That old gas may be just what the rings are looking for to help them

If it was mine, I'd either dump the old gas in a tractor or the pickup
truck, or if I was not sure of it, I'd either dump or start a brush pile

The idea of dynamic (fluid) balancing had been used as far back as 1908 by German
scientists and improved by Americans in the early 1940's using steel ball-bearings
in tubes filled with oil. So Chris, being an amateur-inventor familiar

Hey John,
You recently (and again just now) mentioned the tailwheel touched when you take
off and land in the new Xtra. You said you would try to "work on it" the next
time you get a chance. I am curious about your adjustment appraoch.
Did you plan on raising the leading edge of the hor. stab, or did you consider
shortening the tailwheel rod, or both?
Oh, BTW, nice flight report on the Xtra. You did a great plane proud.

Got two of them working on my Firefly. Prop Balancer and also the
flywheel pulley Engine Balancer at the other end. Seems to be working
fine for me! Yes, they are both made with a small amount of mercury in
sealed tubes. Don't let the word out about the mercury of I will be
banned from most places!! It's right up there with nuclear material in
todays world of over zealous people. I've got several pounds of it if
your interested.

Only when making agressive take offs and landings, at air shows. Normal
operation is ok.

Neither. I plan on stretching the main gear legs. The tailwheel hits the
ground because there is not enough altitude in the main gear to allow the
aircraft to rotate agressively on take off and land in a nice 3 point
stance.
The main gear are longer than the old ones, but still not enough for me.

I've been buying it from Advance Auto Parts (though in 8oz bottles). In
the past I was buying it from
http://oil-store.com/ , which I should do again now that I have the plane
flying.

It _IS_ a pretty area to fly around, isn't it? I was thinking of going
down around the Castle, but (now at least) the camera was fixed to one of
the cage tubes, so I'd have to dive the plane at the castle to get a good
shot... and I'd have to fly lower than I'd like in that area (no place to
land!) to get a decent shot.
I like to add music because it makes the video more "watchable" for non
pilots, especially when piecing clips together where the original sound
doesn't match... but I left enough engine sound so you can hear (basically
full throttle until reaching the 1000' pattern altitude on downwind, then
cruise power until chopping the throttle to idle about when I turn base,
then just the occasional "blip" to make sure it doesn't load up and quit on
me).
-Dana
P.S. See my other youtube videos (username "parafan" for more flying
around the local area (mostly PPG).

Grant,
I don't want to start an oil war with others on the list, but perhaps you
would be open to using a different brand. Specifically Yamalube-2. This is a
two-cycle grade of oil sold by most Yamaha motorcycle and snowmobile dealers.
It can be used as a premix, or in the autolube pump systems. Yamaha has
been selling this oil for many years and it has a proven track record. And, if
you don't think that grade of oil is suitable, they also sell Yamalube-R
which was created for use in the racing bikes under extreme conditions. It
costs a little more. If you have a Yamaha dealer near you, check it out.

Larry C:
Good for you.
Did you get any hawk or falcon feathers in the paint?
Gang,
The new legs actually do make the plane look better than I expected. I
don't need a booster seat to get in, but close. They have unfortunately
created another problem, because it is now too tall to get into the
trailer. I don't need the trailer any more since I have my own hanger
and runway, so it is for sale if anyone would like one. It is 25 feet
long, full drop down door, a nifty lifting boom support. The roof has
been foamed so that it does not build up moisture and drip all over your
plane. The trailer with a plane inside weighs less than 1800 lbs. I
hauled it with a 91 Subaru most of the time. I can supply pictures and
weight empty as well as measurements for anyone who might be interested.
$1800. would take it.
As for the falcon she laid three eggs this year. Going to have to find
her a boyfriend I guess.
