Roger, I am surprised that nobody is picking up on this topic except you. PENNZOIL AIR COOLED 2 STROKE OIL IS GONE. Only existing stock at retailers is left. Lockwood Aviation bought the last 500 cases. according to the nice lady at the Lockwood booth at SnF it has to do with Shell buying the Pennzoil line. I used to buy my oil from a Pennzoil quick change oil place. He would sell it to me at cost. A few months ago he could not get it any more. He said he was told it was out of production. Lockwood Aviation confirmed this at SnF and was surprised I knew. I was just trying to give you guys a heads up. NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT THIS YET. Steve In a message dated 5/1/2008 11:45:17 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, rphanks@grantspass.com writes: Steve, Do mean Pennzoil is phasing out Air-cooled Two stroke oil, or ALL two stroke oil? Could they be replacing it with their snowmobile oil? It is rated TC and TCW3. Says on their website that it is Rotax approved. There are a lot of air cooled Rotax powered snowmobiles out there. I wouldn't think they they would want to give up on the entire two stroke market, but stranger things have happened. -------- Roger in Oregon 1992 KXP 503 - N1782C **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Subject: 100LL long term in 912
    From: "lucien" <lstavenhagen@hotmail.com>
Hi all, I asked this over on the titan yahoo list also, but since there're long-term 912 operators here I'll ask the same thing here. I'm sort of thinking ahead about the possible arrival of alcohol laced mogas here in NM (don't know if the bill passed but if it did, this'll start this coming january) and at that point I'll have to make a decision about my 912. I'm considering just running 100LL when that happens as I (as well as Rotax) doesn't want 10% alcohol in the motor (corrosion is really my main concern 0 BTDT with alkeehaul). My question is, does anyone, i.e. john h and john w., with long experience with the 912ULS know what the long term effects are of steady diets of 100LL? If it does whack a chunk of time off the TBO, how much would that be? I understand the slipper clutch and sprag clutch could be affected by it as well. I looked through the archives and some of this has been discussed before, just wondering about field experience with long-term 100LL usage. PS: and off topic: I might be getting one of my 503's back from the guy I sold it to, so it may need a project - perhaps another Kolb! The Pennzoil 2-Cycle Oil for Air Cooled Engines is still avalable in 8 ounce bottles. However, this is not always true when one is confronted by the Intercoastal Waterway. There is a rule for that which is determined whether one is sailing clockwise our counter-clockwise on the Intercoastal. Since I am flying my Kolb, and not sailing, I am not really concerned with my seamanship anymore. My boat has been landlocked, high and dry, for many years. Makes good lawn art. john h mkIII

Rotax says run a semisynthetic oil and change it often. I do that. I also run Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel. Does it help? I don't know for sure, but would like to think it does. If it makes me happy, then it is ok with me. My 912 ran much colder and was prone to lead fouling sparkplugs. Haven't had that problem with the 912ULS which runs much hotter. At home I run 93 octane mogas, with or without alcohol. I noticed this last mogas I bought at the country store and at Wal-Mart's has alcohol added. I'll have to be diligent with fuel samples now to see if I get a water problem. Only time I run 100LL is on cross country flights when I can not get mogas. When I change the oil, I also flush the oil tank with fuel, then take it apart to insure I get all the lead out. I have never put more than 1200+ hours on the previous two 912's I have owned and operated. However, they were still in top notch shape when I sold them. john h mkIII

I don't use enough 100 ll to know nor have I spent the time to research the affect on the slipper clutch and sprag clutch, the first things to happen is the time between oil changes and spark plug replacements reduces to 1/2. Also the choice of oil has to be one that will hold the lead deposits in suspension better. The synthetics seem to lubricate better when the engine is running.. but the mineral oil seems to protect from corrosion better when it is not running. I guess I try to get the best of both worlds by using a synthetic / mineral oil blend. Boyd

For anyone camping at AirVenture, this is good news!!! See the following. I read it that, they will be adding some sanitation equipment to our camping area at AirVenture. Maybe we can get more Kolbs attending this year. Both John H and I E-Mailed Timm Bogenhagen (EAA's operations manager for the Ultralight/LSA area) and he (Timm) was dead set against doing anything for us. I have been trying to get some sanitation facilities closer to this campground for a number of years. I have contacted everyone and possibly irritated people with my persistence. I really don't understand the resistance. If a opening in the fence needs to be a foot wider to get a truck thru then could that be done? If that is too much to ask then maybe just one of the many Port-o-lets and a trash cans could be moved to the north end of the of the Ultralight/LSA camper/trailer campground? I have been flying from Lansing Michigan to AirVenture for a number of years. The Ultralight/LSA campground was once a popular place to camp but over the last few years I have been practically camping there by myself. We need to make it more welcome to visitors. I have had my private license for 20 years and my VW powered Kolb MKIIIC has been a licensed experimental since before its first flight. I have written a few articles for the EAA's LSA magazine. The last article was in the April 2008 issue. Please help you are my last hope. Richard Neilsen EAA# 0156743

The reason that the 8 oz bottles are still available at the distributor is because there is less demand for that size. The price per oz is much higher than the 16 oz. If you dig deeper I think that you will find that Pennzoil is not packing any new ones. If you like this product I suggest that you buy whatever 16 oz stock you can find to hold you over until Lockwood has a new recommendation. Just trying to give the List a Heads Up. Steve 1st came back with the area south west of the UL/LSA strip and stated that it already had six port-o-lets and a dumpster. That had to be the UL/LSA tent/trailer camp ground area. Well, that response doesn't really answer the question.... "still avalable [sic]" doesn't specifically mean that they are producing the oil, only that some 8 ounce bottles are still available. Maybe a pointed question would be more helpful and get an answer that would tell us if the specific air-cooled 2-stroke oil is or is planning to be discontinued? -- Robert On Fri, May 2, 2008 at 8:30 AM, Thom Riddle <riddletr@gmail.com> wrote: > > I emailed Pennzoil directly about this and got the following reply. > > Dear Mr. Thom Riddle; Thank you for your interest in our products. I'm still trying to decide what oil to use in my 912UL. Mark G, the previous owner, used Valvoline Duralube semi-synthetic because he used 100LL strictly. Maybe I'm a doubter, but the Valvoline oil may not be the best for gear lubrication. I plan on using autogas and 100LL if I cannot find autogas. Some 912 users have switched to Honda GN4 motorcycle oil as it's designed for gear lubrication as well as the engine. I would like to use Honda's HP4, a semi-synthetic oil. Rotax says that motorcycle oil can be used with either type of fuel. If I could, Mobil 1 synthetic would be good, but Rotax states not to use it with autogas. Is anyone using motorcycle oil in their 912? Hi all you 912 and 912S flyers, You can't go wrong by using an oil from the Rotax list of oils for the operation you are planning. See SI-912-016 at http://www.rotax-aircraft-engines.com/pdf/dokus/d04286.pdf Rotax does make changes to the list, so you have to stay current. -------- John Williamson Arlington, TX Kolbra, 912ULS, 1595 hours http://home.tx.rr.com/kolbrapilot Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=180743#180743

Ok, the consensus I'm getting over on the titan list is that the alkie is less harmful than the lead in 100LL - the reverse of what I thought. Also, that the alki containing gas appears to be ok out in the field, as long as the usual precautions are taken against water contamination, etc. That's exactly the info I was looking for...... So I'll just run the alki containing stuff when it finally shows up here. As for the oil, I know slightly more about that than gas, which I know next to nothing about ;) I follow the listing of recommended oils in the Rotax bulletin, even tho the brands/formulas they list are the European versions (the US versions of some of these have a different formulation, tho who knows which of them do). After that, I follow the service grade and weight requirements. The manual says an API spec of SF or SG so I make sure the stuff I use at least meets that grade. For what it's worth, most of the automotive oils around these days meet API SL/SM, which exceeds the specs of most motorcycle oils I've seen (they're usually SG. later API specs are all backwards compatible and the later ones meet more stringent standards as well), so they're probably actually better lubricants. If an oil is on the not recommended list from Rotax, I don't use it no matter what grade it is ;) Right now I run the valvoline durablend semi-synthetic at 10W40 weight, API service grade SM. Subject: Excellent service from Daryl @ Warp Drive, Inc
    From: "John Bickham" <gearbender@bellsouth.net>
Just wanted to post a note on the repair of my Warp Drive prop. Many of you know I suffered a prop strike when an aluminum fabric inspection plate came off and struck the prop on edge. Never really knew it happened until I was putting the plane back in the hangar. I flew with an IVO the first 200 hours. I'm pretty sure this prop strike would have took a chunk out of the IVO. I was almost positive that I would have to replace the blade. I was thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of $300. Called Daryl at Warp Drive, Inc and sent him a picture. He said a repair would be no problem. Sent him all three blades. Asked him to repair the damaged blade and trim 1" off all three for noise. Went from 72" to 70". He did all that, cleaned and rebalanced the blades. He even got the south Louisiana bug guts off that I couldn't. I can't tell which blade was repaired. All three look brand new. I basically got a new set of blades for under $120, including return shipping. Certified GA couldn't even get an A&P to look at it for that! He also included some extra 8mm nyloc nuts in that. I'm super pleased. One thing to note is that there are distrubutors for Warp props. As best I can tell, they just sell and don't do repairs. If you are buying or servicing, I would recommend you go straight to the source. Warp Drive, Inc Daryl H (sorry forgot last name) Ventura, Iowa 800-833-9357 Now it is time to set pitch and check cruise RPM. You guys have a blast at MV. The wind is howling out there right now. Whether the "outdoor" product is being discontinued I don't know, but this may be the source of the confusion. We're a tiny market, but with the number of ATV's, dirt bikes, chainsaws, and weed whackers out there I can't seem them abandoning this segment of the market. -Dana If you look on the back of both bottles you have mentioned you will find that they BOTH have the same stock # which is 4130 . The 4130 is located just above the bar code. It is the same # on the " Air Cooled 2 Stroke" AND "Multi-Purpose Outdoor". Penzoil also offers yet another multi- purpose oil but it does not have the 4130 # on it. That is the one that is available at my local Wal-Mart. I just bought a case from LEAF about a week ago and as of then they still had it. Ed Diebel ( FF# 62) **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? They have taken me to some exciting places and brought me home again safe and sound. I repitched my Warp Drive, 3 blade, 70 inch prop yesterday. Wanted to take a little pitch out of it and turn a little more rpm. I dropped one degree. This brought my climb rpm to 5300 to 5400 rpm. Straight and level it will turn 5500 to 5550. Engine is much crisper. Seems to have really freed it up. 5000 rpm cruise is 85 mph on the button. I picked up a steady vibration on my test flight yesterday. Not bad, but noticeable. Went through the entire repitch process today. One blade was about an 1/8" (bubble) out. Got all three blades singing off the same sheet of music. Flies slick as a turbo today. Getting ready for MV, john h mkIII

There are two (or more) Pennzoil 2 stroke oils. The one that the UL community has had such good luck with is now packaged with a blue bar on the bottle. The important thing is that on the back it is rated TC. The other 2 stroke outdoor Multipurpose oil has been labeled with a brown bar on the front and on the back it is rated TC3 or TCW or something like that. (I'm to lazy to look it up right now) Bottom line is the TC rating is the one that was tested many years ago and was praised so highly for AIR Cooled engines. TC3, TCW etc is primarily for water cooled 2 strokes, IE: Jet Skis, outboards, maybe 582s but not as good as TC rated oil for aircooled 2 strokes. Water cooled engines do not develop the hot spots that an aircooled engine does thus they dont need as high a quality base stock to make their oil. Apparently Penzoil figured their Multipurpose oil was good enough for weedeaters, chainsaws, etc since they say it is also for aircooled engines. When my weedeater seizes up I say screw the lawn work and go in the air conditioning and have a beer. If my 447 seizes thats a whole different matter :^( When the supply of the true Pennzoil Air cooled 2 stroke oil (TC) dries up, then I guess we'll have to run what ever is available, but dont be confused thinking that the "multipurpose" oil is the same thing or just as good. It isnt.... Dwight Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=180826#180826

Lucien - I'd like to share this info (alkie less harmful than the lead in 100LL) with my club. Can you either summarize the reasoning from the Titan list, or tell me how to access the thread on that list?
