Subject: | Firestar Project |
I started measuring all the spare legs I have, and the I called Travis at TNK.
I got a surprise- none of the legs are a size that he has heard of. First- all
of them are 1" diameter. Travis said there are only 3 stock diameters; Firefly
is 1 1/8", Firestar is 1 1/4", and Mark lll is 1 3/8". All are the same length-
28 1/2". I have spares of 3 different lengths, but all are shorter. My axle
end is 3/4", and Travis said all of the ones he knows about are 7/8". He said
he has heard of somebody putting a piece of pipe in the "A" frame to bush
it down, and I will look for it next trip. I have to look and measure before ordering,
so I will be out to the field next week.
He also commented that I may have some type of proto-type from the Old Kolb
Co. That might explain all the odd dimensions and no serial number.
I described the bent legs from taxi testing, and he said that some people will
make their own legs using 6061 aluminum. They are supposed to be 7075 T-651.
The 6061 legs will bend just like I described.

Bill S:
Original Firestar Gear Legs were 1". The Old Kolb Company put a
aluminum tube bushing in the gear leg socket so it would fit.
The old Twinstar, the first two place Kolb, used an 1 1/8" gear leg.
Same socket with no aluminum bushing.
I bent the 1" gear legs on my FS the first time I taxiied it on my grass
strip. Called Little Mike at Old Kolb to send me some Twinstar 1 1/8"
legs. They worked better, but my type flying called for something
better. Thus, the experimentation and use of heat treated 4130 legs on
my Kolbs since 1987.
I don't think you have a prototype Kolb. The first Kolb I got with a
serial number was my MKIII in January 1991, M3-011. The old Kolbs did
not have serial numbers.
I think the individual that built and/or modified your Kolb is
responsible for the odd dimensions.

Subject: | Poly Fiber question |
I've got a quick question for you Poly Fiber experts. I'm getting ready to start
my main wings/ailerons, and flaps on my MkIII. I only have 1 quart of Poly
Tak left. (actually, it's just under a quart). Does anyone have an idea how
much Poly Tak it takes to cover just the wings, flaps, and ailerons.
All other surfaces (complete tailfeathers and fuselage) are finished. Just the
wings. I can't recall how many quarts of Poly Tak I started with, to know
much it took to get to this point.
I think I may have used one quart so far, but I can't remember.
I don't want to get in the middle of doing the wings, and run out. I'd rather
have it on hand, if I need it anyway.
Thanks, Mike Welch

Gang,
things seem kind of slow, so here are the pictures of Dart. ( should
rename her to Phoenix, she has risen from the ashes three times now) As
you can see the new steel legs make her stand up a bit. Her flight
characteristics seem to be the same. I intend to try to be a bit more
careful in the future. At least I can be sure that the legs and axles
won't fail me any more, but then again as I recall there was some
problem with a loose nut on the stick. :-/

Looks good from here, and I'm only 3 feet away from the screen.
Those streamlined legs?
Even though wheel pants LOOK dandy, streamlining legs will reduce
drag as much and all you need
is a couple pieces of sheet metal.

Subject: | Re: Poly Fiber question |
Mike,
If you mean brushing on MEK or Poly Fiber reducer, to soften a glued spot,
yes.
If you're talking about reviving the Poly Tak cement after it turns brown,
then no. And that happpend to me, too.
I bought this Kolb MkIII kit from TOK (The Old Kolb) and all the Poly Fiber
stuff (from Jim Miller) back in 1998. I covered the fuselage and some tailfeather
pieces. After a few years, the rest of my Poly Tak went dark gooey on me.
Dondi said "chuck it, and start over." Which I did last year. (including
tearing off ALL the old fabric that was installed prior to this last fall.) Mostly,
the fabric removal on the fuselage was due to the redesign the fuselage,
to look like an Xtra.
Anyway, you think ONE QUART should do the wings??? Ok, I'll hang in there
with just one quart. Besides, after finishing one wing, if I have used more than
half of my quart, well....time to order some more, I guess.
Thanks, Mike W

Yes, I have flown it twice, no problems, no difference other than being
a bit higher up in the air when I touch down.

Still whittling away on the radiator shell. Some more fillo and
sanding and it gets painted hides-all-sins white.
that will be it for this year, time for some flying!

(I'm sending this note for my father who has been hospitalized for two weeks with
an episode of what is presumed to be paraneoplastic dermatomyositis.)
"The Grey Baron is still hospitalized, with some progress, mainly he's able to
lift one heel about 1/8" while bedridden. Rudder travel limit!
He's moving to an excellent rehab connected with hospital next week, and may get

I completely agree with John, I have a 503 Rotax and try as I might,
I have never put
1200 hours on mine either. Hell - I never thought it would get to 600
hrs without me having
to have it rebuilt. Now I'm thinking I can get to 800 hrs.
BTW: at 800 hours I'll just buy a new 503. Good deal - 10 years for $4,400
I have, however, put way over 700 hours on it without using PENNZOIL
AIR COOLED 2 STROKE OIL
at all. I use DOT 3 - Walmart oil. Not because of the price, but
because I used Pennzoil for 30 hours
just to see. It made the plugs dirtier faster. Oil is a cult/religion
- so............do what makes you feel good.

Looks good Larry! I will be taking lots of pictures of your gear legs when I get
there.
I did the break-in procedure on the 503 today and did 6 touch and goes with long
full power climbs. Brought it home, took off the cowl and re-torqued the head
bolts. I also installed the carb kits and rechecked the fan belt tension.
Things look good for the Rock House trip. I'll try to put in a couple of hours
of airtime tomorrow in close proximity to the airport. I hadn't flown in
almost two months, a record for me since the first flight of my firestar.

DOT3 is brake fluid, not motor oil.
