In fact we don`t have any nasties, either animal or vegetable. There are stories of a `black creature` which is supposed to inhabit the wilds of Dartmoor and I saw with my own eyes a creature which I am convinced was a cougar ( or same family) while on the Isle of Skye in Scotland a couple of years ago. We have one type of poisonous snake, an adder or viper. I have only seen one in my life. We have nothing like poison ivy. Think it's more of a 'psychological' barrier than a 'technical' issue Mike. I assume from your 'JetPilot' handle that you would know that most, if not a ll of the 'heavy iron' use low pressure fuel pumps that are embedded into the t ank or collector tank of the fuel system. More than that, they even plan on usin g the fuel passing through them both as a lubricant of the moving parts of the pump and to cool it (the punp) as well, and also to heat the fuel which may be cold soaked. But of course these system are tested extensively before even getting anywhe re near an aircraft. Still, the experience of the Auto industry backs up the lo gic of the application. Still, I have certain reservations about it as you do, but then again, is it safe to get out of bed this morning ? David. From: "R. Hankins" Mark, I have been using my aux tanks for over 300hrs with no problems at all. My KXP doesn't have a lot of room. I found two 2 1/2 gal plastic gas jugs that would fit behind the seat. I put a top tap through the cap of each tank with a fuel hose and screen long enough to lay on the bottom of the jug like on an RC airplane. I teed the lines together and mounted a facet fuel pump to the left tank. My mount is crude, but has held up well. I bolted the pump to a small square of 1/8" aluminum plate and used velcro to mount the plate to the tank. I used bayonet disconnects on the pump wires. The output from this pump connects to another fitting in the cap to my main tank with a quick disconnect. I mounted an on/off switch in a handy location. The whole thing can be taken out of the plane in less than a minute and packed to the gas station for filling. I have used this feature several times when cruising around. Land in a nearby field, yank out the tanks, walk to the gas station, fill up and walk back. I can post some pictures if you would like. It would be even easier to make up a five gallon size like you want (more room to mount the pump). -------- Roger in Oregon 1992 KXP 503 - N1782C Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=183826#183826 ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 09:12:03 AM PST US From: "George Myers" Subject: RE: Kolb-List: Re: Tansfer pump Ideas? Do not hit one on landing, and don't try to catch one by hand. They are bigger down south. Yes, you can eat them. So, I have to pretty much have to take what I can get just from the cables alone. Most of my flying is off hard surface runways. Once a month I fly to Hagerstown for an EAA chapter meeting and once a year to the Wilber Wright Memorial field south of Moreland, Indiana and land on grass. I prefer to three point the FireFly with five degrees of flaperon and to make soft field take offs with the same flaperon setting. I do this as my normal mode of operation so that if I have to land out and/or take off from grass, I am up to it. These approaches minimize the forward velocity and energy, so that if I drop a wheel in a hole, it will minimize possible damage to the FireFly and/or me. The modification has no effect for a wheel dropping into a hole. I feel young, but I am over seventy and so slow is good for me. On takeoff, I like to tease it off and I make sure I have the FireFly is under control in ground effect before I advance the throttle for climb out. This has served me well in the past when unexpected rotors during cross wind conditions defied my expectations. In one case, I was able to retard the throttle and ease the FireFly back onto the grass beside the runway to prevent being sucked into some trees. Three pointing the FireFly ensures that the FireFly touches down with minimal forward speed and energy. I figure it has saved me twice due to engine outs. One was in a landing with the rows in a bean field and the second was with the rows in a cross wind in a corn stalk field. The problem with three pointing comes if you round out a little too high. The modification is designed to assist the gear leg in the case of plopping. I would rather take a little rougher ride on the ground than to spend time removing, straightening and re-installing landing gear legs. I hope to be able to test it out tomorrow. If the modification does not prove out, one snip of the cutters will remove it, and I will have my five ounces back. Jack B. Whew! ****** hell. What a dangerous place . Hah! Every few years we get some in the lake where I spend my summers. When I was a kid they were constantly around one year, everybody used to throw rocks at them to keep them out of the swimming area. One evening I was swimming and saw what I first took for a clump of seaweed under me... but then I realized seaweed didn't have arms and legs to swim along with me... I think I made my very first solo flight that night (see, this is still flying related) when I levitated out of the water through sheer fright! Past couple of years, though, it's been bears, not turtles, giving us fits. Haven't seen either at the airport... though sometimes we would chase coyotes off the airport with our PPG's. -Dana do not archive -- As I learn the innermost secrets of the people around me, they reward me in many ways to keep me quiet. ________________________________ Message 26 ____________________________________ Time: 06:57:52 PM PST US Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Re: Tansfer pump Ideas? Mark, =C2- I never timed the transfer but the pump is rated at 30 GPH so 5 gallons should take about 10 minutes.=C2- If you're close to E ast Tennessee, $35 will get this one.=C2- I no longer need it.=C2- If I reme mber correctly I used Adel clamps to mount the pump to the handle of the tank. =C2- Steven ----- Original Message ----- From: knowvne@aol.com Sent: Monday, May 19, 2008 9:07 PM Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Re: Tansfer pump Ideas? How long did it take the faucet pump to transfer the 5 Gallons ?? Now that I look at the angles involved, that should work ok. Let us know after the test. BB do not archive On 19, May 2008, at 9:38 PM, Jack B. You could save even more weight by making the top half out of 1 inch and the bottom half out of 3/4 inch tubing which weighs .664 lbs to the foot. The steel gear puts less stress on the cage than the stiff aluminum rod. But if you enjoy bending aluminum and then straightening it all the time, have fun. Just an idea.
