Hi Russ,
not the Coronado but last year we sat out on that spit of land the
marines extended in the `40`s to protect San Diego Harbour and watched
the planes disappearing among the buildings. Didn`t get the opportunity
to get closer. Apart from flying in there from LA. It was the first stop
on our tour which took us to Monument Valley
Can`t remember the name of the place. Old age is a terrible thing.
Cheers

Subject: | Re: Coast Guard Intercept |
Hi Roger,
I wouldn't fly the missions for all the money in the world. He has to take
off at a certain time and make his IP on time, it doesn't matter the wind or
rain. Dave flys two missions per day lasting about 2 hours each flying in
some of the worst turbulence and sometimes at night. In years past the CAP have
not flown due to weather but the little FireStar has put them to shame. The
day before yesterday Dave took off into a clear air dust devil, lost it on
take off. Without Dave getting off the plane I inspected it for damage then he
took off again, he made the IP only a few minutes late. Had it been me I
would have been changing my pants instead of flying the mission.
I'm very proud of my little FireStar, has made all it's missions and brought
Dave back safe. The Coast Guard is only a small part of the outer defense
and is what a lost pilot sees when he strays into a prohibited area. After
that, if he doesn't turn back, he will be forced down or get shot down. This is
why the FireStar is a very important assist to the training. The FireStar has
been shot down, in simulations, count less times. Too bad Dave can't get
pictures of the fast movers, almost had a close call with a couple of Blackhawks
so he is too busy to be taking pictures after the initial contact with the
Coast Guard.

Cool pictures. Don't tell me Dave was getting paid for all of this. That
would almost be too much to take. At least my tax money was going to a good
use for once.
I'm not jealous.... No really....

Subject: | Re: Fatal Ultralight crash in North Georgia |
Because of the popularity of the ultralight hobby, crashes of this type of a
irplane are not unusual in White County. O=99Brien said the last incid
ent happened "a couple of years ago."
The problem with such planes, he said, is that if something goes wrong, ther
e are no safety features to protect the pilot.
"It=99s like a hang glider with an engine," he said.
Sounds like someone in the local area should have a talk with sheriff O'bria
n and elevate his IQ

Congratulations Grant! To celebrate getting our pilot certificates we'll have
to have a South Georgia Kolb Fly-in!
I'm in Waycross, you're in Americus, and someone else wrote me from Donalsonville
(lost the email...who was that?). Any others?

That guy definitely needs to be educated on small experimental aircraft... They
don't glide anywhere near as well as a hang glider ;)
Not to mention the fact that I cant remember the last time I put my feet down and
ran along the runway to land my Kolb !

Russ,
In the spirit of what John Hauck has asked in the past, how about
identifying yourself by what you fly and how much experience you have.
You have made over 70 postings to the Kolb List in the last two months
with all kinds of sage observations and advice, but not stating from
which you achieved this wisdom. I would be willing to learn!!
This from someone who ignores a reasonable request to not impose
themselves on the Homer Kolb family by staying overnight at our fly-in
there!

One of my local flying buddies (who flies a single seat Falcon
ultralight) flies from a neighboring airfield that is right next to a
large state prison. In the last 5 years, he's had 3 forced landings in
the prison fields due to engine quits. The guards round up a few
inmates, and they come out to the field and carry his ultralight out.
They know him by name now. Even got his name and a picture of his
downed Falcon in the local paper, last occurrence. Breaks the monotony
of prison life, I suppose.
