I have been listening to you guys bicker about VDs or something for too long
now. I think you have just about covered it. If someone wants to try them,
try em. I dont care. I am of the consensus that they probably would not
help my Slingshot much and besides, I trailer my play pretty often with wing
bags and I think the porqupine things would cut up the bags. I would like
to express my discontent with your statement that your Kolb flys better than
anyone other. I beg to differ. You need to ride with me in my Slingshot.
It is not for everyone but if you want intense, hot action or just lazy,
kick back fun, this is the plane for you. I can boost it to a hundred mph
or fly at sixty (might have to deploy a little spoilerron for that), can
safely land in less than two hundred feet without even braking a sweat. Can
climb like no tomorrow and cut a corner like a fine tuned sports car. Dont
know if it can slip cause with the spoilerrons, it comes down very nicely
and lands on a spot. ( I have won several spot landing contests). Now, I
do all of this at an average of 3 gals burn an hour, packed, extra gas, and
heading to Florida coast at 85 mph. I go throught bumps like a hot knife
through butter and afternoon risers are no match for my 22 foot wing. Now,
bring on your "flys better than any other kolb" aircraft and we will see
what is better or not. Maybe you are just not the pilot you think you are
or want to be. By the way, I fly or have flown at least ten of the
ultralights of the days and many, many LSAs. I have never found one of them
that would hold a candle to my little slingshot with my 912UL. So, I will
be at the Kolb Homecoming in September and I will expect you to be there
with bells on and we will put the two together and see what the crowd
thinks. I am up for the challenge, are you? Put your airplane and your
mouth where it counts. Ted Cowan, Alabama

Subject: | Re: Aileron Spades, Lighten Stick Forces and Improve Roll Rates. |
Some people asked me about how I arrived at a size, and what the size of the spades
I put on my Kolb. The spades were copied from a Decathlon, which has about
the same sized wing and ailerons as my Kolb MK III. Sorry getting the size
published took so long.
Attached are some more pictures, that show the size of the spades, and the 1/2
inch of the edge that is bent up at 45 degrees. The 45 degree bent edges reduce
flexing under load, the spades should not flex at all in flight, I used 6061
T6 aluminum which is very stiff. I used washers to get the spades exactly
level with the bottom of the aileron, within 1/3 of a degree, again this is important
so that they do not act like trim tabs. The size can been seen from
the ruler in the pictures.

There are lots of forums on the internet, and it is common to have disagreements
on them, it is inevitable no matter what the subject. Most people are adult
enough to deal with it, post what they need to post and move on. On very rare
occasion you hear of people that threaten others with violence, etc. etc.
I, as most others that I know have always just shaken our heads when we hear
of something like this, only the lowest, most disturbed human trash would threaten
someone because of a disagreement on the internet.
To give you a bit of history, Planecrazzzy and I corresponded in some private messages
about a couple Kolb items, always cordially. One day I told Planecrazzzy
that he was wrong on this list in a pretty nice way in this thread, you are
all welcome to read it for yourselves.
http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?t=36500&highlight=electric+trim
The reaction by Planecrazzzy was nothing short of bizarre... Its all there for
everyone to read. The fact that Planecrazzzy has resorted to threatening me
many months later just shows what a disturbed individual he is.
A certain group of people here have always taken sides, applying standards of conduct
to some on this list, while ignoring the likes of Ellery and Planecrazzy
posting some of the worst things to have ever been seen on the matronics forums.
It speaks very poorly for all involved that have supported this bashing
of on the list to the point where people can think they can threaten, and try
to indimidate other members of this list. I will be writing the matronics
administrator about this, Planecrazzzy has corssed a line here that no one should
ignore here.

Subject: | pre- tire kicking |
Hello,
I'm new to the list, and had a quick spin through the archives to see if I
could find the answers to my questions there. I couldn't, so pre-apologies
if I'm asking the same question for the umpteenth time.
In my pre- pre- tire kicking phase, I like the layout, looks, affordability
and performance of the Kolb Mk.III Xtra, and keep returning to it as a
possibility, albeit at the light end of the spectrum. Being as realistic as
possible (I'll get over it), most of my flying will be local pattern work
and $100 hamburger flights, with a few weekend cross-countries for variety.
Less likely, though important in my wife's mind are occasional long (e.g.,
Seattle-Santa Rosa) flights, and the once-in-a-lifetime hajj to Oshkosh.
>From what little info I've been able to pick up from the Kolb site and
Kitplanes annual index, it looks like a winner for the local flights with my
wife and me. From the pictures, there might be enough baggage room/payload
left over (neither of us are featherweights), for an overnight bag for the
weekend/overnight jaunts. I suspect that it lacks the payload and baggage
for two people on an extended cross-country though.
So, regarding the Mk.III Xtra,
* What does it have in the way of baggage space/capacity?
* Have there been clever ways of extending the baggage space (e.g., external
pod)
* What are people's experiences using (or trying to use) it for long X-C
with 2 people?
Thanks in advance,
Doug Girling
