The extra reliability, extra power, and extra safety of the HKS all make it a much better engine choice for a Kolb, even if it is about 3000 dollars more. **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? I also fill my MK III from 6 gallon Cans>> Hi Mike. is that the standard can in the US?. In the UK we use a 20 litre can which is approx 5.28 US galls so it is a bit easier. I uses an all plastic pump with a very short pumping action of the handle, maybe only 3 or 4 inches but it works at a reasonable speed. It is also very light and can be stowed easily. We also have one which uses the same clamping action as the lid of a fuel can so one end of the line can be fixed immovably to the can. This saves needing about seven hands., but it is a much heavier job and the hose is more difficult to loop and stow away A guy I saw last week had made a bracket to hold a funnel and he hung that from the trailing edge of the wing and had enough height to lead a hose from the funnel in through a hole in the side and into the tank.Lifting a fuel can to the height of the trailng edge is not too onerous. Just a thought Pat ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 09:37:42 AM PST US From: "pj.ladd" Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Re: Thank you, Homer This about sums it up>> Hi Grant, re Challenger. What a load of rubbish that report is. Yes, they are not too generous as far as room is concerned and you have to be reasonably athletic to get in and out but criticisng a plane on those grounds is like condemning a Mini because it is too small. If you cant get into it. Dont buy one. Yes, it is a thick airofoil section. So are most microlights until you move up to the high end where their speeds verge on light aircraft performance. You need a bootful of rudder to start a turn. Of course. Thats is why planes have rudder pedals and you were taught `coordinated turns` when you were learning. The pilot took a door off and was surprised that this changed the sideslipping characteristics. Not surprising at all I would have thought. I never fitted doors on mine at all ans she sideslipped like a dream. The pilot took off before he was up to flying speed and it was difficult to control and then reduced the throttle and things got worse. Really? Has this guy actually flown anything. The plane seems has a reputation for not maintaining an accurate course. I never noticed it myself but Challengers in the UK have a little filet fitted to the leading edge of the rudder, rather like a B17. Perhaps that is why as it does not seem to be fitted to the one in the picture. It won`t soar. Oh come on. it is merely sold as a `long wing` version not as a sailplane. There are always some in the `For Sale` adverts. Seeing the thousands that have been sold it would be surprising if there was not a healthy secondhand market. I had better shut up before someone reminds me that this is a Kolb list but I couldn`t let such nonsense go un`challenged`. I would have posted it on the page on which the original was published but coukldn`t be bothered to go through the registration process. Problem with it was attempting to get a clean bend around the leading edge without it lifting near the bend. -in addition the stuff doesn't age well and the adhesive tends to get mushy with time, after application. This year I tried ordinary packaging tape. The roll I have unfortunately shows no manf. ID. It is not the thin, easily tearable stuff --has some body and toughness, no idea what type of plastic but, so far this season has done great. It is a 2" wide roll which I slit in half and use one foot pieces. Just one for now.If I wish to install a remote antenna where might a good location be on a FS II? I'll offer ya'll some background. After registration while taxi testing/familiarization with the tail off the ground I took a gust and was flying. I have had it balloon before. This time just a few more R's and I'm now leaving 94C down and behind. Many Kolb drivers might understand the distraction of open cockpit flight in a FS II. Besides keeping the airspeed up and wings level I was very distracted by my anal sphincter and harness both of which I could not make tight enough. So after second approach I did the ultimate no-no. I stalled it on. This insult to my dream machine caused it to fail the left axle fitting (older whimpy mod.)which caused a nose breaking maneuver which bent front half of cage. I am now about to spray the first coat of Poly Brush on repaired cage and I thought the belly could be a possible location for future remote. So , should I put couple of plastic reinforcement rings on or concentrate on sphincter exercises? I enjoy building but I want to be a pilot again. Having to pour gas once every five gals is not bad. (picking up 2-1/2 gals at a time doesnt require steriod use). I like the idea of using a ladder -- where do you pack it when you are flying? he he he. ted cowan. I am lucky, I can fuel from the left side so I can rest the can on the left strut for the back tank and then it half full usually and I can pick it up and lean it against the leading edge to fill the front tank. Still heavy for a little guy like myself but what the heck, sacrafices are part of the game. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. ************************************************************************************* Has anyone used one of those 5 gal. cans you can get from... I think it's Northern Hydraulics, that you pump up and it has a small hose and nozzle like a service station pump? I bought one to use to fuel the top tank of my dearly departed US, as there was little room between the underside of the wings and the topside of the tank. Never had the chance to use it (a wind storm broke the tie-down and flipped the US onto its right wing and bent it) but it seems like the answer to the no-room-to-tilt-and-pour problem or the I-don't-want-to-lift-five-gallons-of-fuel-that-high mindset. If anyone has used one, do they work out as well as I'd like to think they would? I riveted a alum base plate there for my ground plane before covering. I later tried to mount one on the enclosure hoop on the windshield and found that it was not a better location, and went back to my underside location. I talked to a bunch of great people and saw many wonderful airplanes. Thanks to everyone on the list that I talked to, you made my week. It is the people experience that makes it so great. I even talked to Homer Kolb and his wife. There was only one Kolb that flew in and it was a Firestar. New Kolb didn't have anything flying. I missed not seeing John H there. We even had two Port-O-lets in the UL/LSA campground. Our buddies wouldn't let the suck trucks in to clean them but.... Also had some solemn moments with our Kolb friends thinking about our departed friend John W. His ear to ear smile, humor and friendship was sorely missed. Then I came back to all this crap on our list! Please one and all THINK before your type! Be nice. Do not get personal or calling people nasty names. If you are one of the nasty posters, people will set you straight. I think it is called what goes around comes around. If you cry about people getting even with your on the list you are reinforcing their satisfaction. Everyone just let it go ..... PLEASE! I talked to one of our group at Oshkosh that is very reluctant to make a post for fear of getting slammed. We are here to help people with their Kolb airplanes. Everyone has some great things to contribute. Please speak up.
