Thanks, Tony. I don't have to tie it down- it's going to be a major rebuild. Sitting in a pile in the back yard right now. When I am capable of walking, I will get pictures and post them. Bill Sullivan do not archive

OKy , I might just go and take some flying photos myself, for two reasons. One is I have been neglecting aviation a bit lately and second to remind you of what you are missing. Half a world away I would like to think begining aviators have the support of of us all. On this post there is a lot of very good advise from some very experianced people . For our sport that can be a bit of a problem. It may save some bent tubes and some lives but it does put a hand brake on inivation. Having said that we should individualy asses all the information available and take the road that seems plausable to us. Dont expect to get it right every time. This flying thing is no harder than driving a car {so my instructor informed me when I had a bit of a problem working out where the ground was} Heal well Tony From: william sullivan To: kolb list Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2008 8:57 PM Subject: Kolb-List: safety experiment Thanks, Tony. I was amazed that they were able to design and build a very refined airplane in only one year!>> Hi, amazing what can be done if it is imperative. The British de Havilland Mosquito was 10 months from the go ahead from the Ministry to first flight. The Mossie went faster, for longer with a bigger bomb load than the B17. Not bad for 2 men and 2 engines. Cheers Pat

Pat: Now, Now, The "Skeeter" was faster, and could fly further than the B-17, but that was with a 1000 lb bomb load. Also it was more versatile in types of missions. Lets give credit where credit is due. BOMB LOAD: Depending on types of bombs, maximum normal load could go to 8,000 lbs. If B-17 was fitted with special external racks, maximum normal short-range bomb load could go as high as 17,600 lbs. Maximum range with 8000 lbs was 1100 miles. The Mosquito twin Merlins an unarmed bomber could carry 1,000lb (454kg) of bombs for 1,500 miles (2400km) at a speed of almost 400mph (644km/h) which was almost twice that of current British bombers Jim H DO NOT ARCHIVE

At 10:55 AM 8/5/08 -0700, you wrote: > >Is an 800 foot strip long enough for either plane with 60 to 70' trees on the end? > >I was thinking 200' wide for the strip width > Grant, You can calculate the required climb rate to clear the trees. Assume a 200 run to lift off and climb speeds of 40 and 50 mph with 600' to go to clear the 70' tree. The time to travel the 600' at 40 mph is: 600(ft)/[40(mi/hr)x5280(ft/mi)/60(min/hr)] = 0.170(min) The time to travel the 600' at 50 mph is: 600(ft)/[50(mi/hr)x5280(ft/mi)/60(min/hr)] = 0.136(min) These are the times required to to clear the tree. The vertical speeds required can be found by dividing these times into the height of the tree. At 40 mph -> 70(ft)/0.170(min) = 412(ft/min) At 50 mph -> 70(ft)/0.136(min) = 515(ft/min) Most normal performing FireFlys will have no trouble clearing the tree. Jack B. Hart FF004 Winchester, IN

It was all tongue in cheek anyway as I was really making the point about the speed of development.. Even there I cheated a bit as there was quite a bit of development on similar designs before the Ministry issued the official `go-ahead. The RAF had a song the last two lines of which were ` The Americans are up there at 40,000feet But theyve only got a teeny weeny bomb` There was also the story of the American briefing his men The Fortresses will bomb from 30,000ft. The Liberators will bomb from 20,000ft. For Gods sake don`t get below 15000feet or you will get all mixed up with the RAF. Good job we were on the same side, mostly. The American I would really like to meet is the guy who gave me his mandolin as he was climbing into a truck on the way to getting loaded on the invasion fleet. About June3rd. I often wonder if he made it. Pat

Pat; Not John, but Brother Jim. Yes the Skeeter was originally designed as a much larger airplane with I believe a crew of six. But ended up as a fantastic design. Any flying examples, how did it perform and comments? I staving down here in Texas while the sun is baking us. jerb Jerb and others, My Wife and I just got back from Oshkosh yesterday. We camped in Camp Scholler and somehow managed to miss seeing Rick Nielson, even after all the time we spent at the Kolb trailer and at the Valley eng. trailer. Enjoyed the visit at the Kolb trailer. Bruce , Travis, Dennis and the gang were accommodating as usual. I missed seeing Donnie and wish him a speedy recovery as I know He wanted to be there. We got to visit with Homer and Clara, and Homer appears to be getting younger rather than older. Got to meet Larry and Gene and bent their ears on there Generac conversion . The back yard flier flew quite well and sounded better than the 2-strokes we are used to hearing. It sounded sweet as it flew near our camper each morning and afternoon. I would put one of their engines on my firefly if it were lighter. Larry said it weighs 120 lbs. It didn't climb like my firefly, but It seemed adequate to me. I checked out the 40 lb., 35 hp rotary eng that was on the M -squared UL. Very interesting. Static display sounded good. Very smooth! Cost was 6200 dollars! kinda steep. But I never saw it fly. For some reason they didn't fly it! Hmmmmm? It seems that ULs are becoming a thing of the past as there is much more money in LSP aircraft. They were everywhere and most all were only offered ready ready to fly and did not offer kits. The backyard flier was the only new Ul there and their plane always had people around it! On the way home we got to visit with Jack and Louise Hart. They have a beautiful new house in the country and the room for an 800' runway. But the best part is the large basement that he has for building. He has done more custom work on his Firefly than any I have ever seen. That Simmonini sounds really nice! We thoroughly enjoyed our visit with the harts. Ed Diebel FF# 62 In steamy Houston! Do Not Archive **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Subject: VG Performance Video: Stalls, Slow Flight, Turns, Landing
    From: "JetPilot" <orcabonita@hotmail.com>
Here is a video of my Kolb MK III Xtra and its performance gain with VG's in Stalls, Slow Flight, Turns, and a 43 MPH flare to landing. http://www.vimeo.com/1480667 We all know Kolbs fly very well without Vortex Generators on the wings, better than most planes in its class. But then again, if you put 39 dollar tires on a Ferrari, it would still drive very nicely, and still beat most other cars... But take the cheap tires off the Ferrari and put on performance tires and it becomes a totally different and better car in every way. You would not pay 200,000 dollars on a Ferrari and then put cheap tires on it would you ? We fly Kolbs for their docile predictable flight qualities, their good slow speed handling, and short field capabilities. The Kolbs fly very well stock, but you do not realize the full potential of a Kolb until you put VG's on it. As you see in the video, the Kolb becomes a much more capable, much nicer flying airplane with VG's installed. Installing VG's is the best single thing you can do to improve your Kolb, and it only takes 100 bucks and several hours to do !!! Getting the most out of your Kolb is great, but the added safety is just Icing on the Cake here !!! VG's take 10 MPH off the touchdown speed of my Kolb... If you have an engine failure and are going to land in a Plowed field, or in trees, would you rather hit at 40 MPH, or 30 MPH, the safety difference is HUGE. Once in a while we hear of a report where someone says they tried VG's, but that they did not work well... Look at the picture below to see how perfectly the VG's are installed on my Kolb. Like everything in aviation, the construction, size, shape, and installation of VG must be VERY PRECISE. If you screw up the installation, they might work, but not nearly as well as they should. If anyone is considering this, take your time doing the install as perfectly as humanly possible, it will be well worth the effort. You can get VG's at www.landshorter.com Happy Flying and be safe, Mike -------- "NO FEAR" - If you have no fear you did not go as fast as you could have !!! Mike- Your VG demo tape was very informative for my purposes. The angle of attack at 30 mph was much greater than my Firestar was when parked. With you weighing in at 1000 lbs., and me at 475, it tells all of us just how close to an unintentional lift-off even a slow taxi could be- and especially with no ground speed indication. Nice video you made. I sold my Kolb recently and just found a set of LandShorter VG's that I had purchased last winter during the "Winter" VG debate. I never got around to installing them. My $.02 on the VG's, I assume they enhance the performance on the Kolb, that is why I ordered them. The plane flew fine w/o but why not make it fly better. I have them on my Cessna 340 and would not fly it w/o them. I had a set of Micro VG put on Citabria I bought this summer and .... WOW I still have been hanging out here watching you guys banter back and forth, seems everyone is dug in hard, but what else is new. If anyone would like a deal on a set of LandShorter VG's, contact me off-list.
