When you were younger & dumber? How did it feel? Possum: Kolbs spin. Some better than others. Feels like a spin, very vertical, almost like a spiral. Immediate recovery. However, with Fergy wings and differently configured fuselage, I don't know how your aircraft will react. john h mkIII

Got 8 ribs (slingshot) instead of your "old five rib" machine & got alum angle braces on all of them. I may put the back struts on just to keep the wings from twisting. Just wondered how it feels the first time, it's hard to make it go into a spin anyway, seems like you got to keep every thing cross controlled to even get it to turn once?

Possums- I just looked at the photos you posted. What is the overall length of your main fuselage tube? It looks a little shorter than usual. do not archive Bill Sullivan

The shorter the coupling (distance between the main gear and the tail wheel) , the squirrelier the plane is.

I related the photos you posted of Fergy ribs to the ribs and wing panels on your aircraft. To spin my Kolbs, I pull the nose up high with power at idle, full left or right rudder, and full aft stick just as it stalls. Hold it until you are ready to recover. Usually, relaxing the controls will recover the aircraft. My original FS would only spin one half turn at idle. It would recover with the controls crossed up and locked. During some experimentation doing engine off aerobatics, I did a spin. The little FS spun up like a top. The MKIII loses a lot more altitude than the FS. That was quite a surprise first time I spun it. One will have to work at getting a Kolb into an unintentional spin. However, I am sure there are those out there that can probably get themselves into one. ;-) john h mkIII

I watched Rett Radford (Aubrey's son) do it from 1500 ft down to 200 ft over the Air Acres airstrip - cutting a toilet paper roll all the way down & then turn straight down the runway. He said there was no G load on the wings & it was safer then a loop. Of course, I watched him do loops & hammerheads too. Belive it or not, I watch him throw out a bag of flower at the top of a loop - do a loop & hit the bag at the bottom of the loop. ...but I'm guessing that was just luck. The good ole days. Also his Dad died doing the same stuff in a 5 rib Firestar at an Airshow. Overloaded etc. but still? I've never done a loop on purpose.

The new wingtips Kolb came out with on the MK III this year will make a huge difference, should lower the stall speed a lot, and improve glide. Not only due to the wingtip itself, but the extra 2 feet of true airfoil on each wing that was until now flattened out as part of the bow wingtip. The new wingtip along with a longer effective span wing will improve things a lot in the new Kolbs. From reading John Hauck's flight reports, I would not hesitate to modify my Kolb MK III wings to use the new wingtips. I would think it would also pay big benefits to use droop wingtips for the smaller Kolbs such as the firestar and the firefly. Its an easy upgrade to the kit, I wonder if they have considered that ?
