Don't know what the name of this glacial fed lake. That night I was put down on the Stewart-Cassiar Highway by weather. I had planned on spending the night at Dease Lake, but the pass, 20 miles south was socked in. I found a straight place on the road to land that had a pull out I could use. Had a satelite phone with me. Called Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, FSS, to close my flight plan. Told them I was down on the Stewart-Cassiar Highway. He asked me if I got the airplane off the highway. ;-) It was cold, raining, and muddy. I went to sleep thinking about grizzly bears and woke up the next morning thinking about them. john h mkIII ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 08:43:39 AM PST US From: "VICTOR PETERS" Subject: Re: Kolb-List: British Columbia By Kolb John Wrote "It was cold, raining, and muddy. I caught a message from John H. Commenting on a photo of a reinforced wing, and he made a reference to "Fergie". I am doing fairly well. Still in a wheelchair when I am not lying down. I can walk, but not supposed to. Mostly waiting for the spine to re-attach to the pelvis. Bored, and reading a book a day. I snuck out to the back yard to look at the plane, and will send out photos when possible. It needs a front cage, main fuselage tube, and both wings repaired. Plus a lot of small stuff, but these things are built one piece at a time and can be fixed the same way. It will give me something to do- I am retired, anyway. My wife is still taking lessons, around a busy schedule. Parked in the middle of the strip. Sure was dark out there in the corn field. john h mkIII ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 05:03:10 PM PST US From: "Jack B. Hart" Subject: Kolb-List: 700th Flight In The FireFly Kolbers, Last evening, my wife and I were out in the garden harvesting tomatoes, cucumbers and zuchni when I heard a sound coming from the west over the woods. It was Fred Lucas in his Hummel Bird which is powered by a half VW engine. He passed overhead, and continued east and made a pass over Bill Micheal's. They have been friends for ever. Bill has cancer and can no longer fly. But Fred is 90 years old. They are fun people who never tire of talking about building and flying airplanes. Fred let his medical lapse and flies as a sport pilot. My wife and I drove over to Fred's farm home about ten miles away and arrived just as he was returning. We talked until dark. This morning, I flew to Hagerstown to my EAA Chapter 373 monthly meeting. In the air at 9:00 am, it was powder puff flight on the way down. On the way back at 11:30 am, the thermals were starting to boom and at 1,500 feet agl, I could run thermal streets and pick up a few more mphi. Coming back was the 700th flight for the FireFly. With balanced control forces, the FireFly is such a joy to fly. It makes it worth while to put on the neck sock, helmet, vest and heavy sweat shirt and to go fly. Jack B. FireFlyer's >After making these repairs, I thought that surely, I had removed all play from the left aileron control system. But when I shook the aileron again, I discovered that the aileron push-pull rod end rod bearings were worn to the point that they rattled too. When TNK gets back from Oshkosh, I will order replacements. > A little follow-up. I did replace all the rod end bearings, and it did help. But, when I wobble the trailing edge of the aileron up and down there is still a clicking noise. I traced the noise to the where the "Tee" bar pivot tube passes through the load bearing tube at the bottom of the yoke assembly that connects to the boom through bolt. Currently, without hearing protection and the engine running, one can not hear the aileron hinges or pivots slapping. I will try to slide a brass shim stock strip inbetween the pivot tube OD and the load bearing tube ID to take up the slack. Fly safe. Jack B.
