Andy -
I built my Mark-III Classic with the single central control stick. Like
you, I was somewhat apprehensive about that setup because it was not
exactly conventional. My only control stick experience was in Cubs and
Champs, which are very conventional stick-between-your-legs airplanes.
But in the 5 years I've been flying my Kolb, I've come to really
appreciate the position of the stick. It falls very comfortably to the
reach of your right hand, just outboard of the right knee, and it
provides the full range of unobstructed side-to-side movement. The
armrest between the seats is in the perfect position to support your arm
while flying, making it quite comfortable. I like it.
But, if you want the conventional dual stick setup, New Kolb offers that
as an option.

aircraft. Thoughts? Andy >>
I hold a Private Pilot's license, but let my medical expire a couple of
years ago when the new Sport Pilot rule came out. Been flying my Kolb
as Sport Pilot ever since. Doesn't affect me much, as all my flying is
recreational, and I don't feel as though I've lost any privileges or
freedoms under Sport Pilot. I'm glad I can do my own maintenance and
annuals - keeps the cost of my hobby reasonable.

Hey Denny -
Here's the cheapest way to do it: Go to Home Depot and buy a "grounding
rod," like what electricians use for grounding a house. It's 5/8 inch
diameter, smooth, copper plated, and about 6 feet long. You can use it
to pass thru BOTH gear fittings at once, thus eliminating the need for
the angle iron and clamps.

I also have a MKIIIC and came from general aviation. These planes have a
light wing loading that will get bounced around in thermals. They also have
very little mass combined with a fair amount of drag that will catch people
with GA experience off guard when you flair for landing, They slow down VERY
quickly. Every thing else is very positive. The visibility is so wonderful
you will never go back to GA.
As for the center stick it has become very natural to me to fly with it. The
only down side is trying to fold maps on a cross country. It sure would be
nice to clamp that stick between my legs so I could use two hands from time
to time. I have watched people get in and out of the dual stick MKIII and it
is a chore but I'm sure you would get used to that also.
Also if you want to save yourself a bunch of money you can order the VW
mount and put a redrive VW on a MKIII C or X. It is too wide a mount for the
Kolbra.

Hey guys the angle of the axels will not allow a solid piece of 5.8 rod
to pass through them. I don't think they get that way even with full weight
on them unless you have a couple guys in the plane. If we are talking about
the new steel gear from Kolb, the hollow tubing.

Y'all;
Using a round rod to go from axle socket to axle socket is fine as long
at the rod, which will have a slight bend in it due to the camber set in
the axle sockets. If the rod isn't 90 deg. from the floor depending
which way it is tilted you will either get toe in or toe out. If it is
out of plumb to the rear you will get toe in, tilted forward you will
get toe out.
Just a thought.
