Subject: | Kolb time needed W Tennessee. |
Anyone within a half days drive of Memphis consider taking me up in a two seat
Kolb? I am just about ready to fly my recently purchased Ultrastar and need re-familiarized
with it. I will pay your fuel bill. I have been getting some
time is a Cub but everything I have read and remember there are many differences
I need briefed on. Just some landings and several hours should be enough.
My time 20 years ago was in MXL 2's and MXL amounted to over 40 hours plus several
hours in a Zenair Zipper (any of those still around?). Anyone will ing
to help.
Thanks.

I do not claim to be an expert on Carbs...but------:-)
With the mechanical idle screw set all the way in...spring
compressed completely, usually ....the carb idle circuit is no
longer effective...so when you close the throttle...the jet needle
may go so low toward the main jet so as to restrict flow? (that is
your idle circuit now) Check your needle and drop the clip a
notch... These carbs,Mikuni's also, were designed to operate
with engines wthat have clutches or variable belt drives that have
no load at idle... Herb

Maybe for ATVs, snow machines, but the carbs for Rotax and Cuyuna engines
are set up for props without clutches, I would think. I am no expert
either. Trying to use common sense.
Ed D's engine is unloaded when he is in landing configuration. No load on
prop.
I bet if the engine and carb are tuned correctly, he won't have that
problem.
Just guessing, of course.

John brought up a good point. If your EGT's are running a little lower than
normal, it might be caused by a slightly over rich idle setting. Turn the
idle air screw out 1/8th of a turn and see what happens. The idle circuit
continues to produce a fuel flow no matter what the throttle setting. If
your EGT's are running a little higher than normal rotate the idle air screw
the opposite direction.

Russ K:
I use EAA indorsed aircraft insurance. Global, I think.
How good are they? Don't know. Have not had a claim with them since I
dropped AVEMCO some years ago. Or was it AVEMCO dropping experimentals???
I think that was the way it was.
I pay 1,500.00 dollars for 30,000.00 hull coverage in flight and on the
ground with no deductible. That package also includes $1,000,000.00
liability insurance. My insurance covers only me as the pilot. One
exception is a authorized flight test pilot. Don't have to worry about that
because I do all my own work on Miss P'fer ( P fer plane).
Haven't needed to make a claim since I wiped the gear out from under Miss
P'fer 1 July 2000, Muncho Lake, BC. Glad I had it then. I had AVEMCO. Got
the right adjuster out of Vancouver, BC. He sure was a big help getting the
airplane back to Alabama and getting me the money to rebuild.
Hope Global will support me the same way should the need arise.
Take care,

Hi Gang:
My MKIII looks right at home, knee deep in fire weed in front of Worthington
Glacier, a little bit north of Valdez, Alaska, during my 2004 flight to the
Far North. Miss P'fer has been a terrific little airplane. This was her
third flight to America's northernmost State.

John and Jack,
Just so we are on the same page. The 447 seems to run fine when the air
temp is above 90 which it is most of the time. I have gone back to stock
jets except I have a 40 Idle jet because it seems to load up. my egts are
around 1000* below 3600rpm. they go up to 1200* at times when at 4100 - 4500
rpms . At 4900 _ 6300 rpm its around 1000*- 1100* I have it propped at
6300 rpm tied down. I dont recall this problem before I installed the 40
idle jet. I guess I can try the 45 idle jet. We have 75% humidity most of
the time. When the weather cools the midrange egt temps go to 1250 or
better. Not good according to Rotax.

John H,
Have you ever adjusted the gearbox spring preload on any of your
b-box geardrives? I am at 100 hours and the rotax manual says the springs need
to be checked. Do you know what happens if the springs get too loose. It
talks of adjusting with the use of shims. I dont want to have to send my gearbox
to Miss.,if I dont have to

Ed,
I'm not John, but I have checked the pre-load on the spring washers in my b-box
twice. Once at 119hrs and again at 452hrs. They were within spec both times.
I still have the shims and replacement springs I bought for the first teardown
at 119 hrs. One symptom of loose springs is a lot of metal showing up on the
magnet in the gearbox drain plug. The dogbone (knuckle) between the big gear
and the prop shaft will begin to move and wear more than it should and you'll
see the results on the magnet.
Hope this helps
