If it is brand new I think I would send it back to where I purchased it.. Have them repair or replace it. I suppose before I did that I would take the time to make sure the peto line is free of debris. Disconnect it from ALL instruments and blow it out. If it is only reading 30 when doing 60,,, I would try something different on the static side of the gauge. again make sure the line is clean or move the location to find a more suitable spot DO NOT blow in the asi,,,,, only the tubing and peto.. Remember the static line is attached to the altimeter as well. Boyd Young Kolb MkIIIC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HI; . I BOUGHT A FALCON 0 TO 80 MPH ASI FROM AIR CRAFT SPRUCE & SPECIALTY. Just catching up on the last week or so of Kolb-list and saw a remark by Mr. Hauck that "planes don't fly below stall speed". Since there appears to be some low-time to no-time aviators on the list I thought I would clarify a piece of trivia...What John said is correct but planes can LIFT OFF below "stall" speed. Wonderful little thing called GROUND EFFECT makes that awesome Kolb wing create enough lift to levitate before that little needle gets to the bottom of that little green arc that the last owner installed. My only point is to reiterate what has been said...don't "drive" that airplane around till you are sure you could fly it and land it. And just because that previous owner said it stalled at 32, don't think it won't "FLY" below that...(it won't "fly' long but it could get the wheels off the ground long enough to get someone real hurt...) Just a piece of trivia to think about... Jeremy

David I don't think that Russ mentioned you by name. Thanks for clearing my suspicion. John Williams mentioned at Monument Valley that you had asked him to inspect your airplane. He said he went to see your plane and spent alot of time looking it over. He then gave you almost a full page of things he thought need to be fixed. John W was a bit offended that you didn't fix any of the issues. Would you please pass that list on to the person you sell the plane to. Thats great to hear Vic !!! This is exactly the reason that I went to the trouble of making the VG videos and posting the information on this list, I am happy I could contribute and help out some fellow Kolb flyers. There have been a number of other people that have also installed VG's on their Kolbs with positive results, but they have chosen to email me in private to thank me. Its a shame that some people have created such a hostile environment here that people are afraid to post information about their Kolbs on this list, but I respect their wishes. 35 dollars is a great deal for VG's, I am wondering if they are about the same size and shape as the ones I have used ? What are they made out of ? I paid 100 dollars for 100 VG, but still the best 100 bucks I have spent on the Kolb :) Can you post a link to where you got the VG's on ebay ? Thanks, Mike -------- "NO FEAR" - If you have no fear you did not go as fast as you could have !!! I know that in a strong wind from behind that rule might get you into trouble but if its that strong perhaps you shouldn`t be even taxying without someone on the wing tip and tail. Just a thought Pat

Grant R. Thanks for the Warning [Shocked] The condition you described would surely have caused an engine failure sooner or later had you not caught it. I will inspect my floats before I fly again. I will also tell the other Rotax guys that I fly with your story, and advise them to check their floats also. It takes only a minute to check, and could prevent a disastrous result. Mike -------- "NO FEAR" - If you have no fear you did not go as fast as you could have !!! AFTER INSTALLING IT THE HAND IS BETWEE 80 & 0 MPH AS IT SITS IN THE HANGER>> Hi, First thing. TURN OFF THE CAPS. THATS SHOUTING HERE. Apart from that, if I was the supplier and you brought the ASI back to me with that story I would immediately suggest that you had blown down it `to see if it works`. Those little pipes are very enticing and you wouldn`t be the first to do it. It will b****r up an ASI every time as sure as eggs is eggs. Holding it out the car window with both both pitot and static exposed to the wind, `just to check it` won`t improve it either. So, with an ASI that you knew didn`t work and in an unfamiliar plane, you went flying. Uh huh! Don`t ask me to fly with you. Blowing through the tubing won`t help if the thing is registering wrongly on the bench. You say it was ok when you unpacked it. Seems a tad unfair in that case to blame Aircraft Spruce If I was running AS and in a very friendly mood I might agree to have it back for checking but you would have to be prepared to accept the result. Hard luck Pat

Grant and Crystal, I am the same way about the wind, I don't fly if its much over 10 MPH... I fly the Kolb for fun, and I'm not having fun if I am worried about damaging my plane on landing, or if the turbulence gets so bad that is scares me ! My wife loves the turbulence, the more the better, she would go poking around small storms if I let her [Shocked] The wind has calmed down a lot since the passing of all the hurricanes has stopped influencing the water. Grant, This float condition is most likely NOT from using ethanol, but rather from using a carb gum cleaner on them. I never use carb gum cleaners on plastic parts. It has been known to have the effect on plastic that you describe. Yes John W. lived near me and I ask him to come by during my building proce ss I was excited to have him look my plane over. When he saw the plane he w as excited because he thought it looked like it could be an Oshkosh award w inner. That got me excited and I ask what do I need to do to get it into aw ard winning shape and boy did he let me know! I was shocked at the length o f his suggestions=2C when I saw his list I felt a deep sinking feeling=2C b ut when I started reading though them with him he assured me that none issu es he found were show stopping safety concerns but just the way he=92d do i t. As I think on it what a nice guy! I certainly hope that I didn't offend John W=2C as you state=2C he never le ad me to believe that I had offended him. Since I looked up to him as a Kol b leader and appreciated the time he spent teaching me I did feel obligated to report my status on the list he gave me to him and I also posted someth ing about it on this list. I told him I got almost everything done. I don =92t know how John W. would of known what I got done on the list because he didn=92t re-inspect my plane=2C he must have been going off what I told hi m. As far as your safety concerns=3B I got the kit partially built from a lady named Lisa Turner. She=92s a legend in some EAA circles=3B she is an EAA b uilding instructor so I felt really good about the construction done before I got it. Her husband owned the hangar where it was built his name is Jerr y Stadtmiller he owns the top Stearman airplane restoration shops in the Na tion. He assisted her while she built it. Lisa had one EAA condition inspec tion before I got it. I had three EAA inspections during the building proce ss and I have their signoffs. But just to be extra safe I had them done by different members and showed each one what the other members comments were. And if that wasn=92t enough I had John W come by and take a look. And if t hat wasn=92t enough I had the president of my local EAA chapter Mel Asberry (a legend in some EAA circles) who=92s also a FAA examiner do the last EAA condition inspection. Then I had the FAA inspection I showed him the list of all the comments fro m the EAA members and the list from John W! The FAA examiner was very impre ssed and very comfortable by the amount of attention to detail that went in to a plane that was so simple. So altogether it=92s had 4 condition inspect ions=2C plus one by John W plus the FAA inspection totaling six. But if saf ty is your concern you don=92t have to take my word for it call them or ema il them and or check for yourself. I=92m no legend but I assure you this plane has been critically inspected i n all stages of the build process by legends=3B John W.=2C Mel Asberry=2C L isa Turner=2C Jerry Stadtmiller=2C and Lucky from Air Salvage. While I don=92t consider myself an airplane inspector when it comes to some one else=92s plane I am confident enough to fly mine from Texas to Monument Valley=2C Utah or London=2C Kentucky with my wife. If you don't mind I=92m not going to participate in getting involved in say ing what he said and that type of behavior=2C especially someone that is so respected and no longer with us. Sorry I don=92t have the full list of inspectors for you but I=92ve forgott en their names and I=92m at work! But if you=92d like them send me an email and I=92ll get them to you. If after you=92ve contacted these people and inspected the plane and are st ill don=92t feel comfortable then don=92t buy it. After all it is the pilot in commands responsibility and if you don=92t like it don=92t fly it. FAA inspector Lucky lucky@asod.com Third condition inspection Mel Asberry You can read about Mel on this page http://www.eaa.org/homebuilders/program s/bingelis_winners.asp Lisa Turner http://www.lisaturner.com (she=92s moving and hasn=92t had time to update her web site) Jerry Stadtmiller http://www.bipeinc.com/ From: NeilsenRM@comcast.netTo: kolb-list@matronics.comSubject: Re: Kolb-Lis t: qDate: Mon=2C 29 Sep 2008 12:23:17 -0400 David I don't think that Russ mentioned you by name.
