Imagine where we be today if Homer had been afraid of being sued for design
ing a "dangerous" airplane.
Don't expect any improvement in the legal system from Mister Obama. Just r
emember after all he is=2C first=2C foremost and above all else=2C a lawyer
.
Fortunately everybody knows how to easily tell when a lawyer is lying.

"O" No!! . . . we told you so

Hi Fred=2C
Haven't heard from you before. Hi.
Good point regarding Homer designing a plane and trying to sell his desig
n. It's important to note=2C however=2C that because of the (present) free
dom we have in this country=2C we can build an airplane ourselves=2C and fl
y this airplane=2C with few restrictions.
The "homebuilt pioneers"=2C like Paul Poberezny and many others=2C fought
hard for us to have the right=2C that we have as Americans=2C can enjoy un
der Experimental Category Aircraft rules. (some could claim we have always
had the right!!!)
I don't think Homer should have much to fear=2C even in this day and age
of litigation happy people=2C if he decided to design another plane today
=2C and sell it. He is=2C after all=2C just designing something and supply
ing a few pre-made parts. This is the point of the 51% percent rule.
More than HALF of the plane must be built by the owner. This greatly frees
the "designer" from virtually all fault in a poorly built airplane.
All a designer would have to prove in court is there are lots of his (sam
e) designed aircraft flying all over the place=2C quite successfully. This
would lay all the blame back on the guy who crashed the plane. It will in
99.99999% of the time=2C show the builder or pilot is truly at fault! (who
=2C invariably=2C ran out of gas=2C used wrong bolt=2C flew into electric w
ires=2C put part in backwards and upside down=2C landed in 55mph crosswind
=2C something leaked=2C etc=2C etc=2C etc)
I have no doubt Homer fully tested all the components that were to be inc
luded in his kits. Boom tube thickness engineered for maximum torque at 6+
Gs=2C fittings welded to withstand maximum forces=2C etc. He intended his
design to accomplish a certain mission. Not building=2C or flying the pla
ne=2C within these limits generally releases him from liability.
I have made a few design changes to my plane (MkIII Classic). I have the
freedom to do that. It's MY plane!!! I do=2C however=2C accept that thes
e changes better be good enough to retain the original safety standards. I
believe they do.
Even in today's world=2C a designer could still come up with a sensible d
esign. Build it. Thoroughly test it=2C on the ground and in the air. Sup
ply engineering calcs. Insure all products he makes are of the utmost qual
ity. Sell the kits!!
Experimental Category Aircraft rules....enjoy it while the offer lasts!

I like the larger tailwheels, I need to do that one day, along with a bunch of
other projects :) I was wondering how the larger 6 inch Aircraft Spruce tailwheel
would fit on a round spring. Did drilling it out leave enough material
for the tailwheel not to crack at the mount ? John H's bracing on tail is also
nice, if I had the ability to weld, I would do that also.

Mike, plenty of wall thickness after the resizing. I also shortened
the spring rod.

I got a Navman 3100 fuel flow meter.... my console wasn't big enough
for it, so I hand-made a box for it to go into, and put it on the
"floor" of my MkIII... all the power and cables are underneath, so it's
a clean installation.
