Great photos John! Thanks for sharing them.
I was not so fortunate to have the blue skies I see in the photos.....
I couldn't agree more with your weather comment, even with forecasts, the weather
always seemed worse than predicted and changed rapidly many times, especially
on the West Coastal area. I certainly respect the folks that fly in this Region.
Alaska was my first experience where I was asked to "declare my option" on approach....
I scratched my head for a moment then humbled myself to ask, as I had
no idea what the tower was asking. "Water, turf or concrete" was the response
and concrete my choice.
Take care

You mean the rivet heads AREN'T supposed to be spinning around? Oh
well, more duct tape is in order I guess.
I tried some experimental video yesterday. -An old VHS mini cam on a
stalk, put in the axle hole of a wheelbarrow
tire, bungeed to the seat. Worked pretty good but I need to aim it
up a touch more for the right flight attitude.

The older model MKIIIx requires a lot more rudder to fly coordinated than
the other model Kolbs. I believe this is caused by the long, large, flat
nose. When the aircraft gets a little out of yaw trim, relative wind tends
to pull the nose further out of trim.
Most Kolbs will do quite well flying with ailerons only. Homer did a good
job of designing the differential into the system to prevent adverse aileron
control.
I have never flown a Kolb that could be flown with rudder alone, more than a
very short time. When they begin to roll, rudder alone will not pick up
tyhe wing. Because they lack any significant dihedral, if you lose aileron
control, be nice to have a parachute.
I am only aware of one Kolb that lost aileron control, my Ultrastar. That
was caused by a catastrophic failure of the upper aileron bellcrank, the
little one right over your right shoulder, not the big one attached to the
boom tube.

. Oh, my plans didn't specify what filter to use,>>
Hi Larry,
neither did mine. I used the same type of filter I used on my Thruster
and then on my Challenger, now on the Kolb.. It works, it is simple. A
glass tube with the fuel going in one end and out of the other. It comes
to pieces with a spanner. You can see if there is muck in it. Why change
it? Fit another one. Why?.
It is not that we are not allowed to change things, not even the number
of sheets of toilet paper, we can. Not with the ease of your system I
agree. It is just that Kolbs designed a plane with certain
characteristics. Safety, dependability, ease of maintenance, etc., They
have more experience with the plane and its foibles and needs than
almost any one Kolb pilot. Then along comes a pilot who may or may not
know what he is doing and `improves` it. According to the posts on this
list usually with the cheapest bit of kit he can get . He will change
the oil which is recommended by the maker for something cheaper, usually
automotive oil, change the make of the plugs. Change the size of the
fuel tank without doing a weight and balance. From the posts here some
pilots don`t know where the c of g is, or where it should be. That is
frightening.
If John H says that he has changed something on his plane 500 hours ago
and so and so is the result then we could all make a judgement on it.
Unfortunately there seem to be some on the list who just change things
on a whim for very little reason apart from the fact that they can.
I remember the airplane designers creed. `Add lightness and simplify`
Thats good enough for me.
Cheers
Pat

Flying into hangers doesn't
count. Glad you got your bird fixed and flying again. Especially glad you
did not get hurt in the process of experimenting with hanger flying.>>
Great John, that made me laugh out loud.
I wasn`t really having a little dig at the reasoned and well thought out
changes that experienced people like you make and my point about Kolb
knowing more than anyone else was precisely beacause they get feed back from
customers. My beef was about those who go on...and on....and on about the
oil they use etc. Just anything except what the manufacturer specified. For
what gain? 10 cents.
Its great that you can experiment and I wish we had a little more leeway
sometimes. In fact we now have a very light weight category where we can do
just that but it does not include Kolbs.
If you post on the list that you have built a gismo that added 15mph to your
cruise I should listen with interest. But I am not going overboard because
you have changed the type of plug you use in the face of the makers
recommendation to save a buck every 500 klicks particularly if it starts a
thread that goes on for a couple of weeks.
Still chuckling

Hi John,
My Xtra, like my Challenger before takes a lot of hard work to to go into a
turn with no rudder. In fact someone on this list said that they nearly flew
into the ground in their Challenger through trying to reverse a bank without
using rudder.
People who learn to fly in planes with bigger engines just don`t seem to
worry about the inefficiency of turning with no rudder. If you learn in
gliders you soon learn that an unbalanced turn costs you height, which is
your fuel.
I cannot hiold a wing up with the rudder for more than a few seconds. About
enough to quickly make a note of a temp. or pressure reading perhaps.
Cheers
Pat

Subject: | Videos of yesterday's flight in Miami |
Greetings, Folks,
Jeff and I flew our new (5 months) MKIII-C down the coast from KPMP to Key Biscayne,
did a low pass at Homestead Air Reserve Base (started to fall asleep after
the first two miles of concrete,) and over to X51, where Mike (Jet Pilot) lives.
Missed Mike, since he and his mates were off to the Keys for the day, but
we did try out my inadequate digital camera on the way back up the beach. Thought
it might be fun for you to check out.
The buildings were cool, but I think due to the Lexan and the lens, we got a lot
of shimmery polarizing lines.
Still fun, and a great flight!
Enjoy,
Dave and Jeff

I hope that's not champagne in those glasses, and if it is I hope the pilots came
with a "designated driver". [Shocked]

That looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for the video. Looking at that area on skyvector.com
it looks very busy with class B and class C airspace all over, but
I suppose you were underneath all that.
What are those green and red dots on your windshield?

Thanks John. It finally cooled off here today. It was still ninety degrees but
the humidity was a lot lower (and no afternoon thunderstorms today!). I flew
for an hour today. It was pretty bumpy, but I just couldn't resist the view/beautiful
day.
We don't have any EAA chapter here so I've been organizing a monthly Food and Fun
meeting for all the pilots to get together at the airport at the same time
for some food, fun, and hanger talk. The gyrocopters usually give us a little
show.
One of the guys has a "Waycross Airport Bums" website (http://www.btconline.net/~sportpilot/bums/bums.html) and has added the pictures there.
Check out the pictures of the planes that were either parked on the ramp or flew
in:
http://btconline.net/~sportpilot/bums/party.html
You'll see two links, one for July and one for August. My plane is in the August
link.

Really great video Dave and Jeff. For being fairly new in their Kolb, they are
doing some great flying. I have been doing all my filming of birds, gators,
and everglades and it never even occurred to me to do a beach and video of the
South Florida Skyline like Dave did. I have to give him an A for creativity
!
