- John- I read the article referenced by Richard Pike, and found that it
answered a lot of the questions that have come up.- I live one mile from
Bradley International, and right in line with the E/W runway.- I wondered
about all the wingtip mods on the jets, and why it would pay to install th
em.- The article answered all questions. Anyone participating in the disc
ussion would be well advised to read the whole thing.-

John, Regardless of any purported aerodynamic short comings, IMHO the real
genius of Homer's wingtip is that it is very easy to build and duplicate
side to side and it provides a great anchoring point for the covering.
Simple, cheap and light.

Driving at "a speed equal to the driver's age" -- but isn't that in
clicks, not MPH? So it would be only 50MPH.
But take heart -- getting old is better than not getting old --
And don't you measure your airspeed in MPH too? Knots of course for
the Big Boys. They don't use clicks do they?

I just saw this on the quicksilver list. 2 ultralights had a midair in Arcanum
Ohio. Before making a turn lift your wing up so you can see if it is clear before
making the turn. Keep your eyes open and scan for traffic. This is a sad
thing.

Gene Z,
It is disappointing to see you put list politics ahead of good information. You
have made two responses, which are clearly aimed in " getting in good with
the guys... " You have also not answered a single question I asked about your
tips, you are obviously more afraid of offending someone, than adding factual
information to this thread. For someone that did a lot of work to change your
wingtip design, you sure are anxious to downplay it now, you posts just stink
of fear of offending one of these guys. Are you a brown noser at work also
? Finally, Gene Z and the rest, trying to turn the wingtip discussion into
something about Homer Kolb is just plain stupid. Don't try to use his recent
passing to your advantage, if you have something factual to add to the discussion,
then do it, making this about Homer is just wrong and shows your desperation
do badmouth a subject when you have no facts.
This reminds me of the VG discussion, where there have been many flight test and
reports by many good people here that have been ridiculed and ignored by a few
know nothings here. I have had many private responses by people that have
tried VG's and had very positive results, but did not want to post to the list
because of the reticule and bashing by a few loud mouth know nothings. Its to
bad that this group is bullied people like this.
Richard P.
Do you believe everything you read on the net ? The article you quoted had some
basic information, but its opinions and conclusions were garbage. You, and
a couple others here are so desperate to believe that your wingtips wont make
any difference that you are willing to ignore 50 years of testing and results
by General aviation manufacturers.
Kolb aircraft did not spend the money to develop its new wingtip for the MK III
for nothing. Enough people are now working on MK III 's with the new wingtips
that numbers and flight reports will start to come out, some of you are going
to look pretty bad when that happens, pretty short sighted for those saying
that wingtips can not be improved.

Jetpilot, Im sorry so to see you're reverting back to your habits of
a few years ago.
Then you couldn't write anything without calling somebody stupid,
just plain dumb, etc etc. Now you're back at it! -- here you say, in
one short post:
you're obviously afraid of offending someone
your posts just stink
a brown noser
just plain stupid
your desperation to badmouth
you have no facts
know nothings
loud mouth know nothings
Now, we all know you're an expert; you've let us know that
repeatedly. But the List isn't about I'm-better-than-you-are; it
should be a POLITE and beneficial exchange of information.
Please lay off the insults and stick to helpful subjects. We'd all
appreciate that.

By Golly! If they both had had that $80 Amalgamated fuel filter the Kolb

And where were the $2,000 BRS's we all just got to have. Maybe their $1,200
repacks were not current?
Rest in peace & no disrespect to your friend. It's just a little argument

So after much due reflection, I have decided to respond appropriately: (and since
I don't spend much time here any more anyway, due to postings such as the above...
and therefore can accept being thrown off) (Sorry Matt, I'll accept whatever
you think I deserve)
I think we all need to take a deep breath and meditate on some appropriate demotivational
posters until our heads clear and our blood pressure returns to normal.
See? Suddenly everything is back in perspective.

I know for a fact that this isn`t the 1st, or Second time , or Third time,
Matt has heard from members of this group about this situation. Maybe if he
"Didn`t" hear from us during the November fund raising , it might change.

Mike,
1st you say:
"The type wingtips on the Kolb now are horrible aerodynamically, exactly why
is
way beyond what I can cover here, but the information is available all over
the
Internet if you research it."
Then you say,
"Richard P.
Do you believe everything you read on the net ?"
All about wingtip design.
Then I asked:
Mr. Jetpilot, Where are these "Facts" that support your statement that the
Plans built Kolb wingtips are inferior??
No response yet.
But you know what? I am not interested in anything else you have to say, so
from now on, when I post a comment, or a question from the group, please,
disreguard.
Thank you in advance,

With the oversized holes in the wing attach points and the aileron horns,
is it OK to weld the holes over and redrill them? Or better to weld a
washer over the hole? Are these heat treated, or is it OK to just weld and
then stress relieve? My friend's a pretty good welder, but only with MIG,
not a torch.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Just food for thought,,,,, drill to the next oversize then weld in a
bushing,,, that would give far more surface area for wear.

This kind of complaint coming from the PlaneCrazzzy who went back and changed many
posts, and then LIED to everyone here about what he had posted. For a flakey
loser that has to lie and then change posts to cover his tracks like is as
about as hypocritical as you can get.
As many have noticed, the same group of bullies has been trying to drive me off
the list for years. Matt and see this and is aware of it , and others see it
also... One even commented about it in the fuel filter thread. Most are
afraid to post because of these people.

This small group of bad apples is driving more new people on the list than anyone
knows. Its always the same few guys have been carrying the same old tired
grudge for years. I don't hide from bullies and their tactics, I stand up to
them.

Richard Pike,
For claiming to be a preacher, you have continually made every attempt to cause
problems and get revenge to settle your vendetta at every opportunity. I said
this the other day, and previously in the past. Posting offensive pictures
just shows what a hypocrite you are. In the past, you participated in bad behavior
as much as anyone, and then claimed to leave the list because you did
not like the way it was going. Now you have posted be far the most objection
thing ever see on this list.
Your conduct as a preacher reminds me of fanatical religious sects, who claim to
be men of God, while committing acts far worse than the people they are complaining
about. You would fit in with fanatical sects very well. Because you
sure have a need for revenge, and have held a grudge better than just about anyone
here.

Here is the post where you lied to everyone about what you had said.. (near bottom
).
http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?t=46496
And here is one of the posts in the forum you changed 7 months after you wrote
it, as you did several others to back up you lie. ( Near bottom of page, Dates
of edit are shown )...

One of the list readers went back to the archives where PlaneCrazzzy could not
change his post, and caught him in his lie to everyone. Now you are doing it
again, complaining about my behavior while lying about your own actions.

Subject: | Re: Lindbergh and his flight |
In the early 70' I was running a survey crew on the remote east end of Maui (Hana).
Lindbergh and his old pal Sam Pryor (PAA) had bought the old church at Palapala
Ho'omau in Kipahulu, where they each lived. They hired us to survey the
place and put in fresh boundary pins. In standard Hana style we got 90% done
(everything short of setting the pins), before we got sidetracked by other jobs.
After a month or so Sam called and told us to hurry and finish the job. Sam was
never in a hurry for anything, so we figured the news wasn't good... We went
out and set the pins. Later that week Lindbergh's obituary appeared.
The church at Palapala Ho'omau is a peaceful and beautiful spot high on an ocean
cut cliff. If you go there don't weep over the six child sized graves... They
were Sam's gibbons.
I never met Lindbergh but I was (like everyone else in Hana) on a first name basis
with Sam.

Quite a flip flop from last nights post. You are so desperate to get in with
this little clique of guys, I hope its worth it for you selling out like you did.
Then again, that kind of behavior, doing anything to get in good with a little
group, is usually developed in childhood. Its probably such second nature
to put group politics over truth and fact, that Gene does not even think about
it. I have seen many people like this, and no one respects them.

According to you, Christians are supposed to always keep their mouths shut and
to disagree with you is rank heresy. I'll leave it to my congregation and those
who know me best to decide if I am a hypocrite or not, feel free to go by the
church website and see what I've been doing for the last 12 years and make your
decision.
In the meantime try this on for size.

455 Zulu Delta has been down for awhile as I got carried away with
improvements. Over the course of last fall, winter, spring, and most of this
summer she got a new engine mount per the 618 mounting in the drawings, new
cooling system, new fuel and electrical systems and over the last few days a
new throttle quadrant, too. Last night I hooked up the manometer to balance
the newly rebuilt carbs and this morning was all about the little details
and putting the wings back on.Thanks to all who have made suggestions over
the last couple of years. Especially those who pointed out that my pitot
static system was probably giving wildly over optimistic readings. Yeah,
that's new too.
Although I am rusty and all the controls are backward to my trike, I managed
to do three full stop landings and one touch and go. Even took a little
cruise around the Grand Duchy of Udall when I decided the 582 was probably
going to keep running.
Thanks to Bob Nuckolls and the Aeroelectric Connection. The Z-17
architecture is perfect.
Thanks to my wife, Lou, who wasn't feeling all that well but still helped me
put the wings back on and took pictures.

I vote Old Poop for the "Board" that monitors the list....
and without saying... Big John....
It would need a couple more.... then it would be ready to distribute
"Time-outs"
Purty bad when you make a preacher leave....
Love those pictures preacher !

Problem is, one of them is already drilled out larger (3/8 vs 5/16) and not
on center, so it's already too close to the edge of the fitting.
My thought is to weld the holes up, then weld plates on over the originals,
and redrill (to the original size) in the proper place.

If you weld the Chromemoly with MIG...
It's always best to preheat it a little.... ( sweat it )
Also heat it after to anneal it.... ( let cool slowly )
Also be careful welding...
Sometimes like on a Trailer tongue, truck frames ,
there are areas/directions that
could actually "cause" a crack....

It was just too nice after dinner not to take Zulu Delta up for another
flight. The new radiator (off a Honda 750 Sabre, $20 on eBay) works
perfectly. I climbed straight to 3500' to get some stall practice in and try
to learn how to coordinate a turn again. Coolant temperature stayed at the
top of the green the whole time, The Rotax radiators always made step climbs
a necessity. I think the new pitot static system is giving much better
numbers than it did. I'm seeing power off stall at 36. 5800 RPM gets me 70
MPH, Throttle back to 5200 and I get just a hair over 60.
Did a power off glide that was NOT straight out of the Space Shuttle POH
like it was with the Rice King in the gear box.
Approach at 45 to 50 at 3500 RPM and chop power at the threshold. Settled
right on to all three, but I was so busy I forgot to look at the ASI.
Tomorrow it the thunderstorms hold off.
The only thing that doesn't work is the fuel gage, it just reads full and
empty depending on whether it has power to it or not. Oh well, it came with
the plane.
I love my trike, but there's just something about a Kolb.

Hi Mike,
I can (& do) relate to your frustration with certain elements of the
internet community. The problem with any kind of punishment like you
describe is that it forces some person to be the ultimate arbitrator,
which ultimately means censorship based on one person's opinion.
I'd suggest what I consider to be a much better solution. If you get the
list through email, you can set up your email client (software) to
automatically move any messages from a particular individual directly to
your 'junk' or 'spam' folder.
If you're talking about the person I suspect you are, I can tell you
that I never see anything from him unless someone else responds to his
email and quotes him in their reply. His posts may be in the archives,
but if no one responds to any of them then anyone who searches for info
in the future will, or at least should, be very suspicious of posts with
no confirmation from others on the list.
Once you learn how to set it up (very simple in most software), the guy
will almost cease to exist in your universe, with no need to get into
forcing your (and my) opinion on others. If you need some help, drop me
a line off-list & I'll try to help you set it up.

Congrats on getting her going again.... (and keeping her going long
enough to commit some aviation...)
Looks like the hard work was worth it.
That snappy looking flag paint scheme is a real eye catcher on your
fly-by... I had not seen it before... Got any more pix you could post
that might better show off the detail of that paintwork?

455 Zulu Delta has been down for awhile as I got carried away with
improvements. Over the course of last fall, winter, spring, and most
of this summer she got a new engine mount per the 618 mounting in the
drawings, new cooling system, new fuel and electrical systems and over
the last few days a new throttle quadrant, too. Last night I hooked up
the manometer to balance the newly rebuilt carbs and this morning was
all about the little details and putting the wings back on.
Thanks to all who have made suggestions over the last couple of
years. Especially those who pointed out that my pitot static system
was probably giving wildly over optimistic readings. Yeah, that's new
too.
Although I am rusty and all the controls are backward to my trike, I
managed to do three full stop landings and one touch and go. Even took
a little cruise around the Grand Duchy of Udall when I decided the 582
was probably going to keep running.

Jet pilot,
Would you mind posting your resume? You speak with a lot of authority and confidence
on aerodynamic issues. I have always assumed from your handle that you
fly jets. Other than that, do you have specific education in aerodynamics
and engineering? Maybe a B.S. degree in aerodynamic theory? A masters in low
speed airfoils and wing design? Years of computational fluid dynamics and flow
modeling experience?
Lots of sizzle...any steak?
This isn't a personal attack, I would really like to know.
Thanks,

Jim Kmet,
There is a big difference between doing research on the net about aerodynamic theory,
and picking ONE page on the Internet that goes against more than 50 years
of aircraft design by GA and LSA manufacturers. Obviously this concept is
above you intellect, you are just not the brightest bulb in the bunch if this
got past you.

Beauford, This is the best I've got right now and unfortunately it shows the
dirt where I ran out of Oxy cleaner, too. :-) Off to the Dollar General for
more tomorrow and she gets a good cleaning before she flies again.

What price would be fair for my Mark III Classic? It flies great and matches performance
of a Rotax 582 with it's Geo Metro G10 engine and electric Ivo 3 blade
prop. Ask off line for pictures at apilot@surewest.net Vic Gibson
