Hi Gang:
I was looking at the VG ad from Thom R. Kit includes 100 each VGs. Without
going to Land Shorter web site, I believe they also send 100 VGs in their
kit.

VGs? i.e., Fire Fly with 22 foot wingspan uses same number as MKIII with 30
feet?

The single seat Firestar can be set up by one person and stored and trailered from
a single car garage. The setup isn't hard and takes about 20 minutes to a
half hour. Your car will have to sit outside, but what's more important? I now
have a double-car garage and the car can sit inside too. A Mark II, or III will
take 2 people to set up and can be stored in a garage. My Kolbra is stored
in a hanger and it would be a chore to fold because of the weight of the wings
and moving it around as it weighs 591 lbs.

Hi Dana,
Could be, I suppose but axccording to the article the guy in question
did a hell of a lot of work trying to solve the problem before he
finally got to the magnet thing.
I dont know if the Microlight mag. is available on line but you might
try BMAA. Org.
i am surprised that the problem and the answer have not surfaced before,
we have all been flying 2 strokes a long time. 4 strokes are different
as we have only had the 10% addition to fuel rule since May.
Magnetic bangles didn`t work for my arthritis either.

With a magnetic field we can increase the internal energy of the fuel,
causing specific changes at a molecular level. Increasing the internal
energy to obtain more easier combustion. The molecules fly apart
easier, join with oxygen easier and ignite easier. 'Ionization' implies
that the fuel acquires a 'charge' and molecules of like charge repel
each other, this makes fuel dispersal more efficient. Then if you
charge the air to the opposite polarity, then the fuel and oxygen
combine far quicker than 'normal'.>>
So thats where all that fuel on the hangar floor has been coming from.
It seems that the effect continues even with the engine switched off

Correction, Ralph.... my MkIIIC doesn't take two people, just me, to set
up.... in fact, the time to set it up LENGTHENS if I get someone else
involved. :-)
Here's a video I did of unfolding then refolding my Kolb. During the
re-folding, you'll see I had some help, but, as I mentioned, it increased
the time!

I love to hear the 'preaching'! I watched the video of Travis' yellow MKIIIX.
Didn't realize there were options for more than 10gallons fuel. That's a plus.
How does the MKIII handle midday turbulence?
I've got several hours in trikes; love the flying, just not much utility. I'm
prepared for a light aircraft 'feel', but don't want to be limited to early-morining
flights.
I've got two teenagers, so not sure if I've got time to build. How long to build
w/ the quickbuild options?
I take it a 90mph cruise is a bit optimistic ?
thanks for the replies
Brian

Brian, 90 mph cruise will be a stretch, they like 70 to 80.
My MK-3C with a 912 takes , well, my best time is 12 minutes, to fold or
unfold, then take time to do a good pre-flight, & like the others, If I get
"Help", something will get missed. People watching seem to feel helpless, &
can`t help but to offer. Hard to make them understand it`s just better If I
do it myself.
Best way to evaluate the plane is to get a ride in one.
The Folks at the factory are Fantastic at supporting builders/fliers. And,
any problem you encounter has been solved before. You won`t be alone.

Thanks for all the responses.
The project in question was a Colomban CriCri, now in eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300343336101&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT
I played for a while with the idea of buying it, and build a pair of
slightly longer wings to shoehorn it into Part-103 limits.
(Stock stall speed is too high for VGs alone to bring it down to '103
specks - would be non-aerobatic, of course.)
Between the longer wings + VGs + new propellers to limit max speed, it
could have been a wonderful '103 plane.
Fortunately, I suffered an attack of temporary sanity and begun to think
about the side effects of such change. Longer wings will develop more
lift, but what about elasticity problems? Do I want to do flutter testing
with the new wings? (Answer: No)
The tail surfaces may not have enough control authority at lower speeds
making landings tricky.
Also, flying at lower speeds and higher angle of attack will make the
T-tail sink into the turbulence created by the fuselage and canopy. Again,
potential control problems at low speeds.
Finaly, I could fit in that plane, but me and my wife together would not.
So I am back looking for a two-seat LSA, may be a Kolb.
Sorry for the detour from the regular programming and again, thanks for
the very useful information shared here.

Brian, If I had it to do over again I'd buy a MkIIIX instead of the C. That
claim is based on ergonomics as much as anything. When I first started
flying my C I left the shoulder harness loose enough so that I could reach
the switches on the panel. Then I found myself doing a face plant on the
inside of the canopy when I was nailed by a Kansas boomer thermal. During
the rebuild I put in an over head panel for mag, starter and fuel boost pump
switches. The only switches that remain on the panel are the master and
starter solenoid switches. I can fly with the straps nice and snug now. The
airplane takes the thermals in stride.Bottom line, if I were you I'd set up
a test ride in the factory demo plane or someone on the list. But beware,
Kolbs are like beautiful women and can be very seductive.

Hate to butt in here Ralph, but I'm 71 and fold and unfold my MK-3 every time
I fly it in Fla. unassisted. 20 minutes from climbing out of the pilots seat it's
locked up in the trailer. It is more difficult than my Firestar by 8-10 minutes
but easily a one man job.

Does anyone have any idea why some of my posts to the Kolb list show up in the

I'm wondering if anyone received a post from me today via e-mail with a pict attachment?
The message subject was "Why a Kolb?"
Also why do my posts show as from "guest" on the Web format when I have been a
long time member, perhaps for as long as the list was in existence?
I noticed some others members also show up as "guest".
In last November fund drive I did not make a financial contribution to Matronics
and am curious if this has anything to do with it, or if I'm just having a problem
with my computer or e-mail settings?
I'm sending this message vie the web interface.

Subject: | Gascolator / fuel filter |
All the discussion about fuel filters got me started thinking of doing
something new for Zulu Delta. We're having a spate of thunderstorms every
day for the next week so I decided yesterday to just get on with it. I cut
the filter stem to get it started and played around on Acad last night to
figure out how things would fit. I decided on a left hand thread to attach
the bowl so I wouldn't be feeding into a shoulder. 1 5/8-20 isn't exactly a
common thread so I had to get out the thread wires and remember how to use
them. It's been a quarter century since I last pulled them out of the drawer
(now there's a way to make yourself feel old). Calculation said I needed
1.6262" over the wires to get the pitch diameter I wanted. The flash
obscured the lines on the mic's barrel but if you look close you can see it
reads .6259" (it's a 1" to 2" mic). -.0003" ain't too shabby.Off to grind a
tool to cut the O-ring groove.

...Well...I reckon you COULD get all 100 of 'em on the Fly, John... but it might
look kinda like a cheese grater from the front.... and would likely sound like
a
harmonica band going by...
Actually, the Landshorter package provides an assortment of templates to make sure
that the installer sets them on the wings of a given airplane at an efficient
interval and exactly the right angle of attack...they make a big deal of getting
the angle of attack of the VG precisely correct, and the templates will do that
if
one pays attention to them. I had about 28 of the original 100 left over on the
Fly as I recollect. When I ordered them the lady at Landshorter mentioned that
while most folks just keep the extras as spares in the event some fall off, she
said that some customers who have shorter wingspan machines use the leftovers at
other places such as the tail feathers... I decided to leave the old aluminum
items currently on the bottom of the horizontal stab and both sides of the
vertical stab on the Fly where they are... mainly because they are danged hard
to
get off, even after soaking. I tried. I'll keep about 8 of the Lexan extras in
case I eventually lose a few off the wings... will likely replace the five large
yellow ones on the helmet with the remaining 20...
Speaking of losing them... I have yet to have a single one of the Lexan units fall
off... Landshorter recommends a certain Loctite #401 industrial-strength
cyanoacrylic clear cement, basically a souped-up crazy glue, to put them on
with... they sell the stuff and I ordered a tube with my VG's. One thing,
though -- one had best know EXACTLY where, and at what angle, one wants that
doober BEFORE it touches to the fabric...or your thumb.... your stogie... the
cat.... your left nostril..... whatever. The word "adjustment" is clearly not
in
the Loctite #401 vocabulary....even one nanosecond after first contact. Kinda
reminded me of our honeymoon....
So far -- So good, with these things... as already mentioned, a remarkable
positive difference from the VG setup I previously had...
...worth what ye paid fer it...

My guess.........
One (the smiling birds) came to the list through a gmail account and that's the
one you show up as a guest and the other, this 'un, came in through a different
account (maybe your regular ISP acct?) and you show up legitimate.
They both show up on the web forum.
Matt will have to tell us why.

Still don't know if I would have enough left over for my helmet after
fitting out the MKIII wing. ;-(

headed out to find me some senior citizen grub. ;-)

John=2C
You have the priority backwards. FIRST=2C the helmet=2C then the wings.

Subject: | Re: Microbes in the fuel |
Hi Russ,
<<On the big marine diesels; 600HP and up -- in the tropics algae can
grow into big enough clumps to plug up the humungous fuel filters,
6-7" across. If not run every day or two we added "BIOBOR", a
powerful algicide>>
One of the things that the guy mentioned in his article which I did not
pass on was that he found that the problem was well known in the marine
business. I think they gave him the lead on the magnet thing..
Everything conspires to stop me flying. Lovely day to day could have
flown except that I was sceduled at middayto take my wife to watch my
stepson, who works for the BBC, filming locally. As it takes at least 3
hours to get to the field, fly and put her away that was the morning
shot.
This afternoon was shot because I had a church engagement around 7 this
evening. Evenings are closing in and it is too dark to fly by about 8.
Off to our cottage at the seaside tomorrow until Sunday The WX? Super
for the next 3 days.
Someone up there doesn`t like me.
Cheers
Pat

Subject: | Retreiving the FSII |
Last week my nephew and I went to South Florida to acquire a donor airplane for
Ed's Firestar II rebuild and my nephew's 67 Mercury Cougar restoration. His
dad was giving him an old Ford pickup truck that had outlived most of it's usefulness
(at least in West Palm Beach) so we drove down in a rental car to get
it.
After we got down there we constructed what my nephew called a "Mexican cattle
rack" in the back of the truck (out of PVC pipe!) and tied all the Kolb parts
to it.
The first two pictures are at Punta Gorda and show the Kolb tied in place, snugged
around a 351 engine tucked into the front part of the bed.
The last picture shows two fine gentlemen who aided and assisted in this endeavor,
George Alexander on my right, and the illustrious Beauford Teuton on my left.
After checking out Beauford's Kleenex plane, he took us to lunch and sent
us on our way well fed and with my nephew asking "Are all airplane guys that nice?"
That's almost as good as it gets, but it actually does get better - the preacher
gets to brag on his Lord a little bit - 30 miles after we got home, the next
day, the center carrier bearing on the trucks 2 piece driveshaft failed.
Is that not cool or what? Nobody ever gets to be that lucky... so it wern't luck...
As soon as the weather gets too cold to ride motorcycles any more this fall, we
cannibalize the Punta Gorda basket case and build Ed's FSII back together. Sweet.
(Will probably have a left wing and tailfeathers left over, if you need those,
let me know)
