Subject: | What Are You Thankful For...? |
Dear Listers,
Here in the United States, Thursday is our National day of Thanksgiving. Many
of us will be traveling to be with our families and friends to share in generous
feasts of plenty and giving thanks for many blessings that have been bestowed
upon us.
Many Listers have expressed over the last couple of weeks how thankful they are
for the Email Lists and Forums here on the Matronics servers and for all of the
assistance and comradery they have experienced being a part of the Lists.
One of my favorite comments is when someone writes to me and says something like,
"Its the first thing I do in the morning while I'm having my morning coffee!".
That's a wonderful tribute to the purpose and function of these Lists.
Its always great to hear I'm not the only one that jumps out of bed each morning
to check my List email!!
Won't you take a minute today and show your appreciation for these Lists and for
their continued operation and upgrade?
The List Contribution Site is:

Thank you in advance for your kind consideration,

That has to be the strangest thing I've seen in a long time. Now I know for certain
that I will never attempt to build my own prop. Those prop blades must
really be going through some weard movements. I don't understand how things hold
together. Keep up the video's, we all really like them.

Richard,
Change of subject triggered by your great photo of the FSII in profile.
Did you happen to document any changes in airspeed or power requirements with and
without the wheel pants?
Most Kolbs fly without them but I'm considering downsizing my Slingshot 800x6 tires
to 600x6 and installing wheel pants. I plan to do that and document the effects
of reducing tire size and then adding the wheel pants. Since it is stored
for the winter, I won't know the results until next spring. For what it is
worth, with the big tires my top level speed is 95 mph TAS and I normally cruise
at 80 mph at about 72% power when going somewhere and about 65-70 mph and 50-55%
power, otherwise. I'm hoping to get another 3 mph at cruise with smaller
tires and hopefully another 3 mph with wheel pants.

Thom R/Gang:
Initially, I flew my Firestar with wheel pants, then removed them. Based on
my primitive methods of measurement, I never could tell any difference in
air speed.
What I could tell was the additional weight which was being added during
ground ops at my airstrip where the cows like the airstrip as much as I do.
The wheel pants collected cow manure and dry grass in the rear section of
the pants. When I took them off, they must have weighed 50 lbs a piece.
The main reason I installed them was to try for some protection from the cow
crap. Didn't work though. When the tire hit a cow pie it shot the crap out
to each side. Of course, in an open cockpit, the cow crap would
occasionally hit its mark, me.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I am having my Thanksgiving dinner at the farm
with my friends where I keep my mkIII. Couldn't think of a better place to
do it.

The red led numbers are the voltmeter, it is showing 14.0. The little square red
light below the numbers is supposed to look like a battery.
The manometer looking thing is an antique Makiki pellet variometer. It is a vacuum
flask that fits behind the panel, and the little plastic portion that sticks
through has two little foam pellets that float in channels. When you climb
or descend, or hit lift or sink, the pellets float up or down in the tubes as
air flows in or out of the flask. It is both extremely sensitive and instantaneous,
and as long as you have the room to fit it, it is ideal. And it weighs less
than a pound.
Happy Thanksgiving to all the Kolbers! (Now I need to get back to the garage and
check the turkey smoker)

well the numbers looked in the ballpark......
IMO EGTs are for 2 strokes and jet engines. I set my carb up with OX readings
on a multimeter but a
permanent gauge on the panel would be good for future experimentation.

Also, thanks to all the people that responded to my request for info.
The list is a wonderful
repository of knowledge and experience for all things Kolb related.
After considering
what you guys had to say , I plan to add dihedral before the trip to

Chris D/Gang:
Thanks, Chris.
I have been apprehensive about checking my mkIII for fear of finding
damage done by rodents as I have the last two years.
Before I left on my trip I stuffed some super coarse scotchbrite pads
into the aft end of the tail boom.
At noon today, when I went over to the farm for Thanksgiving dinner, I
road on out to the airstrip and reluctantly removed the windshield
cover. Lo and behold, everything was just as I left it three months ago
with the exception of some additional spider webs and dust. Thank you
Lord for taking care of my mkIII. ;-)
I did use a lot of Decon rat bait prior to departure. I don't know if
that was a deterent or not.
Now to get ready to fly to the Nauga Fly Around in Star Hill, LA.

Subject: | flight on Thanksgiving |
As many of you know I am a Falconer, and the Firestar works well with
finding places to fly my birds, check for game and access points in an
area that is rather remote with very few roads and difficult land
travel.
I am flying a Peregrine Falcon that is currently hunting Ducks, as the
Pheasant is a very desirable and marketable commodity in this area.
Pilgrims and city folk pay a good price, that many of the ranchers need,
to shoot a couple of birds. That leaves Ducks, who are slowly being
forced to move south by the dropping temps. as their resting and feeding
places are icing over. Each storm that moves through the area, also
moves the ducks as well, so it is not always guaranteed that ducks here
today will be here tomorrow.
I do have an artesian lake across the road from me that supplies a lot
of water and flows all year around and is of such volume that it does
not freeze. Creeks supply way too many escape routes for Ducks, so its
lakes, ponds, or disappointment on the creeks. The last two times that I
have been there on the ground, we were the only ones there. The weather
here today is actually pretty nice even though it is a bit nipply, 39
degrees, little or no wind. So I rolled out the Firestar to see if it
was going to be football or hawking. I am pleased to report that there
were ducks on the lake, so football will have to wait. There is a bit of
a weather front moving across the Steen's, but that is for tomorrow.
Even with just a bit of flying for fun, the whole thing took 12 minutes.
I do keep a blog with my adventures, both flying and Hawking that you
are welcome to view at http://owyheeflyer.blogspot.com/ . My trip
hunting will be loaded later this afternoon, good or bad, whichever
works out. Most of the posts there are concerning Hawking now. The
flying plane part is generally during the spring and summer.

Hi Folks:
In addition, I left the aircraft battery hooked up to a small solar
panel and charger. The battery was still hot and ready to start the
912ULS. Normally, the electric clock will run down the battery in a
month is not recharged.
Also, the Whelen Strobes still work. It is normal for the capacitors in
the power packs to go belly up is not operated periodially. I was happy
to see them popping when I flipped the switch.

Hi Kevin,
Choose the Kolb because:
1. Can be folded and trailered - Can't afford hanger rent.
2. Easiest to get into and fast build - Age related. About 600 hr. build
time
3. Two place.
4. Great visibility.
5. Reportedly easier to handle for a tail dragger.
I'm a member of the group _www.matronics.com_

searched for past postings on about any subject that's Kolb related.
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving also - John

Boyd,
I may have missed something but based upon the information you posted
below, it sounds like you may have either added twist to the wing or
changed the incidence. I may be misinterpreting what you posted. I
would think to add dihedral would you need to lengthen or shorten the
struts, lifting or lowering the wings postilion referenced to the
root attachment or raise or lower both wing root to the fuselage
attachment points.
