Nick, corrosion protection, corrosion protection, corrosion protection. Alodyne, epoxy, drain grommets at the trailing edge, and inspection ports s o you can see that it's all working. I can send pictures of what happens if you don't do these things and it ain't pretty. [quote="nickc(at)mtaonline.net"]Kolbsters, I am just about to start piecing together my wings, and then tail. Over time I have picked up a few hint about possible improves to avoid weak areas of design, or maybe I should say weak materials. I have read enough to know these are great plane, but does anyone have a list of thing they would change or materials they would upgrade if they were doing it all over again? Thanks as always, Nick Cassara Palmer, Alaska Proto type Kolbra is going to have wings again! > [b] As I recall, the only thing I wanted to change on my FS II was the pullies under the seat that carry the control cables to the tail. I found the pully diameter to be borderline too small which led to a tight angle for the cables where they ran over the pullies. There were broken strands on the cables where they ran over the pullies after about 15 or 20 hours as a result (the original cables were scary, about 1/3 of the strands broken when I finally discovered the problem). I made several sets of cables as a result, tho the last set using cable I ordered from Travis at Kolb held up fine until I sold the plane. If I do another FSII, I'd look at modifying this pully block to use larger pullies. The design is ok according to AC 43.13 because of the angles involved, but it's borderline on one of the elevator cables that goes to the (upper horn) on the stick. I'd go with larger pulies to add more fudge-factor here. I literally couldn't find anything else on the plane that struck me as goofy or needing modification etc. The original builder did go with a nice swivelling tailwheel instead of the stock Kolb one, and I've heard about the weakness of the lower vertical stab piece, which some guys mod to strengthen it. I love the construction of the Kolb, it's all aircraft grade stuff with no weird problems, etc. That's why it's near the top of the list of planes I'm considering building when/if I ever get to that spot in my flying career.... Rick, I've only owned one aircraft with a 582 and it was a CH701. It cruised at 72 mph at 5800 rpm, which is where I ran it most of the time. I can imagine how quiet your trike is at 5,000 rpm or less. That sounds like a nice set up for quiet sight seeing flight. Change of subject: There are almost zero weight shift aircraft near Buffalo due to the strong winds here. The only one I ever saw never flew. Very few powered parachutes here either (I've seen only one fly once) for the same reason, and not many legal ULs of any type, probably for the same reason of very light wing loading in this perpetually windy area. This is also one of the reasons I'm glad I moved to a short wing Slingshot last year. It handles the winds, gusts and thermals very well. My old short wing (20') Titan Tornado 912 handled them even better with only 93 sq ft of wing area compared to the 110 sq ft on the SS. -------- Thom Riddle Buffalo, NY Kolb Slingshot SS-021 Jabiru 2200A #1574 Tennessee Prop 64x31 About the time we think we can make ends meet, somebody moves the ends. - Herbert Hoover Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=284826#284826

My old short wing (20') Titan Tornado 912 handled them even better with only 93 sq ft of wing area compared to the 110 sq ft on the SS. I know, not Kolb related, but real quick... We do have a group of trikers down south in the area around Albuquerque. Those guys are brave too, I don't know how they handle the conditions here during the spring and summer but they do when I dare not even try it. (the main guy in the trike community there is a guy named Frank Dempsey, one of the coolest, nicest most helpful guys I've ever met in all of aviation. The rest of the group there are great folks too, wish they lived nearer here I'd love to fly with them). They do all kinds of long xcountries and everything else so they could really teach me a thing or two or three..... I think they've gone to MV several times now. If I don't out and out build a new plane, I've given thought to building a spare short wing (23 1/2 footer) for my titan to extend the flying season a little bit. My 26 footer climbs great but can be a handful in gusty winds even with the aileron spades on it. Anyway, sorry for the OT post, but had to comment... I have never heard of these folks yet they claim to sell a lot of engines. > jerb > Looks fishy to me. If they're not an actual Rotax dealer, I'd be very careful to confirm that OEM (correct) parts and Rotax procedures were used in the building of the engines. I.e. if they start talking about "ceramic coated" pistons and such or aftermarket parts in general, I wouldn't go near it. Without knowing better I'd say you're better off in the long run buying new from a known Rotax dealer. Otherwise I'd still be really careful.... Subject: Spot tracking
Hi, Most of you know that I fly over some of the least populated land mass in North America. While I love it, my wife has legitimate concerns on how to find my dead or disabled body if the worst should happen. I got a Spot last December, but did not get the tracking feature with it. Last summer I bought a ICOM radio for a base station so that I could communicate with her and the range is quite good. John H was able to talk to us from 60 miles out, but it is of course line of sight and the higher the better. I decided this year to get the tracking feature and just turn it on every time I fly. It sends a location every 10 minutes, so that should narrow the search pattern quite a lot. My problem with it before has been finding somewhere to put it that it could see the sky. This is my solution. While I haven't been able to take a test flight with it as of yet, the static test appear to be just what is needed. I created a "Shared page" that sends a notification to my friends that appear to be interested in seeing where I am flying. Filing a flight plan is a bit overkill when one is just flying in circles or down to my favorite fishing hole, but notification and a track on the home computer will do a lot to make my friends envious and the wife a little happier. Lucien, What is your reasoning for staying away from aftermarket parts? Have you or someone you know had a bad experience with them in your engine? I'm not really familiar with aftermarket for UL engines but I know with dirt bikes I would take an aftermarket piston and ring in a heart beat! -------- Tony B. Well, I'm not Lucien, but for starters, if you're dirt bike engine seizes you might have to take a little hike to get back someplace for help. If your aircraft engine seizes you might be the star of the funeral. Yes, Rotax engines and parts are pricey but you get a 30 year trail of engineering to make your engine reliable. After market stuff may be fine or it might be....... Folks: Here is a short note and photo of an old friend to old and new Kolb Aircraft, Howard Levy. I had the pleasure of flying Howard in the old factory MKIII many times at Lakeland and Oshkosh. http://www.eaa.org/news/2010/2010-02-04_levy.asp In 1989, Howard came to the Flight Farm at Monetrey, NY, for their annual flyin. He flew in Al Carpenter's two place Maxair to take air to air photos of my Firestar, the 1988 Sun and Fun Grand Champion Ultralight, a week before this same little airplane flew on over to Oshkosh to pick up a Gold Lindy as the 1989 Oshkosh Grand Champion Ultralight. I flew 3,000 statute miles on the flight to Homer Kolb's, The Flight Farm, all the New England States, Sault Saint Marie, Michigan, and Sault Saint Marie, Canada, across the UP of Michigan and south into Oshkosh. From Oshkosh another 1,000 miles home to Alabama. All in front of a dual point ignition 447 single carb Rotax, with a sectional and a mag compass, and no ground crew. ;-) BTW: Al Carpenter was a Naval Aviator who was a POW for many years during the Vietnam Warm. Howard was 88 years old and never quit working. He was at Oshkosh last year, and I bet he was getting his camera stuff ready to go to Lakeland in two months. john hauck mkIII titus, alabama DO NOT ARCHIVE

Oil-store.com has cases of 8oz bottles, but the price is almost as much as the 16oz bottles were. -Dana -- If at first you DO succeed, try not to look astonished!

Hi gang, I understand that Shell has just introduced AEROSHELL OIL SPORT PLUS 2 a new 2 stroke oil which is supposed to be recommended for Rotax. Lockwood Avaition is now selling it and tested it...I have not yet looked for it local but intend to. It is my understanding that Pennzoil is owned by Shell. The following web site explains the new Shell 2- stroke oil in more detail. _http://www.shell.us/home/content/usa/aboutshell/media_center/news_and_press _releases/2010/aviation_012010.html_ (http://www.shell.us/home/content/usa/aboutshell/media_center/news_and_press_releases/2010/aviation_012010.html) Jim Swan firestar ll with a 503 in Michigan

Hi Gang: Some of you may know my Kolb flying buddy James Tripp from Millbrook, AL. James has flown his FSII to the Kolb Homecoming 3 or 4 times now from Alabama, over some very gnarly mountains, happily being pushed along with a 503 that has 270 hours total time since new. This 503 was broken in and lubricated with two gallons of Walmart TCW3 two stroke oil that I bought in 1992 to run through my 582 powered MKIII. Sat in my basement until James was ready to fly his FS 3 or 4 years ago. That 503 has never had anything but Walmart TCW3 oil in it. It is flown, as it should be, hard, not babied. Sometimes in the afternoon I can hear that FS coming across the lake. It sure sounds good. James is a retired AF LTC who saw my MKIII sitting alone at Wetumpka Airport, many years ago. He did not meet me for a long time, but that first visit, alone with my mkIII planted a seed. James said he dreamed and researched Kolbs every day while in assigned in Korea. He came back to the Air University at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, assigned as an instructor there. Soon after I got a call from him. He told me who he was and how much he wanted to look at my MKIII and possibly go flying. He was hooked before, but after our flight he was thoroughly convinced what he wanted to built and fly. I recommended he go ahead and get a private ticket and register the FS homebuilt/experimental, which he did. He did a great job of building the FS and is nearing completion of his Kolb MKIII with Jim and John Hauck modifications. He is building it right the first time. You can get a good buy on two stroke oil at Walmarts. ;-) I think pilot expertise has more to do with two stroke reliability than burning expensive, exotic oil. You can baby and screw up a two without even trying. john hauck mkIII titus, alabama

That is true... but I've never seized an engine of any type! Rotax's have seized even with OEM parts so...??? Sometimes I think Rotax banks on the fear factor... all the way to the bank! I believe owner maintenance and running procedures are the deciding factor as to how well an engine does... period! -------- Tony B. You can get it at the Shell Aerospace and Aviation Store at: http://www.shellaviationstore.com/order/displaytype.cfm?type=AE&bus_unit=&doc=&bus_desc=&show=asp_menu <http://www.shellaviationstore.com/order/displaytype.cfm?type=AE&bus_unit=&doc=&bus_desc=&show=asp_menu>But at $80 for a case plus shipping, yikes. For what it's worth whatever you get, if you run oil injection or you have a 582 (the rotary valve) and you're changing oil types be sure to purge the system before adding the new oil. Some additve packages in the oil will cause the oil to congeal if mixed with a different additive. The classic was Pennzoil Air Cooled and Pennzoil Marine. Just passing along what Eric covered in two stroke school. Been running Phillips Injex 2 stroke oil in all my Rotax 2 strokes since 1984 with no problems, that comes out to 1300 hours. The local oil company even delivers it to my door, since I buy 2 or 3 cases at a time. Last summer I think they got about $40 for a case of 12 quarts. Phillips Injex wont get as much sooty carbon all over the tail of your airplane as Pennzoil does. I tried Pennzoil for a year, went back to Injex, Pennzoil was just too nasty. Yes, I know Lockwood thinks Pennzoil is better. That's OK, they still haven't figured out how to put a windshield on a Drifter that doesn't make the tail shake... Thank God, I never had to run those expensive oils. If I had, I would have run out of money before I got out of site of Gantt IAP. ;-) Back in the early 80's I did some research, without a computer, to find a two stroke oil for air cooled engines. Somewhere along the line I had discovered information that there was some available. However, there was none available of the store shelves. All this research was done through telephone books and telephones. Early on I talked to the folks at Pennzoil's SE US area office, Jackson, MS. Sure, we have two stroke oil for air cooled engines. How much would you like. Pennzoil dropped shipped 12 quart cases for me to the local quick oil change place on Atlanta Hwy, Montgomery, AL, for about 8.00 or 10.00 a case, no shipping charges. I'd stop by the oil change place, give them a personal check and be on my way. That lasted for a few years before Lockwood or some of the Rotax gurus discovered and started selling this brand new oil for Rotax air cooled engines, and the price suddenly doubled. I was still getting mine from Jackson, MS, until one day I called and the well had dried up. Had good luck with Pennzoil, about the same as I had with Walmart TCW3. My story and I'm sticking to it. john hauck MKIII titus, alabama Rick Girard But at $80 for a case plus shipping, yikes.

I'm pretty much with John H. on this one. I think the API TC oils do a hair better in terms of carbon buildup, but a Rotax 2 stroke will do fine on TCW-III. I ran the walmart oil for most of the time I owned my ultralight in its points (non-provision) 503 with no problems. Besides, before there even was the TC spec from API, Rotax required TCW-II and then III oils. Not much change inside in terms of metallurgy since then, so... go figure.....
