with the Drifter Red Rocket (an aerobatic, clipped wing Drifter...that cruises
at 80+ and STILL doesn't have a windshield,) I've gone out and bought a Sport
Flight Talon Typhoon. It's a third generation Drifter - looks like a Drifter
on steroids. Not as gigantic as the Air Cam, sort of the Mama Bear between the
Papa Bear Air Cam and the Baby Bear Drifter. And it has a slight windshield
- just a slight one, but more than the Drifter's.

list - and all the wonderful folks I've met who fly Kolbs, made me want to be
a Kolb driver. But I wanted something much more open than any of the speedier
Kolbs, and once you're used to flying completely in the open, buying a fully
enclosed and taking the doors off still feels claustraphobic.

Yep, this was my main problem after I sold my quicksilver years ago. At the time
I couldn't find anything with the flight characteristics I wanted that matched
the view from my quick.
My trike came really close (had the strut in the front is the only obstruction
that my quick didn't have) but I've ended up concluding i'm a 3-axis guy. I loved
flying weight shift but I just kept missing that independent yaw control you
get with a rudder.
I've seen an FS II on youtube that had no covering on the cage - that struck me
as a brilliant idea to improve the view of the already very good view of the
Kolb. My FSII had covering on its cage and of course its view wasn't quite as
good as my trike or my quicksilver.
Glad to hear from another pilot for whom the view is important. That's the main
reason I only fly high/rear engined pushers now. I'm always mystified by pilots
who don't care that they can't see anything out of their planes, except a little
hole in front or above, but nothing else.....

you know had a bad experience with them in your engine? I'm not really
familiar with aftermarket for UL engines but I know with dirt bikes I would take
an aftermarket piston and ring in a heart beat!
The OEM parts used in the aircraft Rotax 2-strokes are specifically designed for
those engines and for when they're used for aircraft duty.
The most commonly cheaped-out parts are the pistons and gasket sets because these
are some of the parts percieved as the most exhorbitantly expensive. Then there're
things like the small-end needle bearings, etc.
The stock pistons have a different metallurgy than the sno-mo replacements, in
particular they have a different expansion rate. Critical to prevent seizures
when doing aircraft duty. The El Cheapo pistons are usually missing a ring and
are made of a different metal with a different expansion rate.
Aftermarket gasket sets usually have the head gasket made of the wrong material
(aluminum usually; the stock one is a different metal. YOu can tell the difference
with a magnet) and the crank seals missing the Viton covering on the inner
lip. I'm told the aftermarket seal goes longer before leaking, tho.
Sometimes the cageless needle bearings in the con rod small end are replaced with
a different caged bearing. Not good - Rotax went to the cageless specifically
to get more needles in there and thus more bearing surface area and more strength.
So by the time you've cheaped out your engine with this stuff, you got something
you don't really necessarily want to fly with.
In the end, the cheapest route is just going with the correct stuff which leads
to the longest lasting motor and the most enjoyable flight time....

This warning has been going around on other technical forums for a couple of
months. Just an FYI.

Lucien,
Narrow point of view? Charles Lindbergh made it to Paris with out a forward
view. Most who fly find that what ever they fly provides them with an
enjoyable view.
