Pete,
One of the unwritten rules on this list is you have to fess up to stupid acts,
not because anyone wants to laugh at you but because we are all guilty of stupid
acts.
Sometimes we learn from others errors of judgement or lapse in thinking. That is
why we are here.
If you look back a few years you'll read about how I stupidly crashed my early
FS.... STUPID STUPID STUPID ME. We are all guilty so just let us know what you
did so you can be a bona fide member of the the stupid kolb drivers ASSociation.

Thom,
I read a bit, and one of the things I came across was a pessimistic view of
piloting. Basically it espoused that no flight was error free. The trick
was to recognize the errors and to correct them before physical damage took
place.

Jack,
You are correct, of course. I didn't have time to correct my obvious error before
the inevitable consequences of the error took place. Had I another 5 seconds
or so, I could probably have recovered from the error.
I will not commit that particular error again, at least not under those circumstances.
It was an expensive and somewhat painful lesson, but one that is indelibly
recorded in my psyche. On the bright side, it could have been worse.
For those who don't recall, I stalled the FS a couple of feet above the runway.
That in itself would not have been too bad, but the left main gear "landed" in
a deep pot-hole breaking off the axle weldment. The end of the gear leg dug
in, and over I went inverted. Much damage to airframe and some to my shins.

Folks,
Quick question. Whenever I remove the cap on the carb and replace it,
the absence of any star or lock washers of any type gets my attention.
Is there any recommendation to use Locktite? I'd feel better knowing
for sure!

Been flying with that type carb since 1983, none of those screws have come loose
yet. Maybe the rubber boot isolates them from that sort of vibration.

They do not get any Loctite. The only thing on the carb that gets a minute amount
is the enricher circuit housing screws. Just a tad.

OK I will fess up. The Dumb thing I did was while working on the 447
Rotax that was giving me trouble, I had removed the Fire Fly from the
trailer/hanger, un-folded the wings, removed the right wing. DSH { that
means dumb shit Haggerty} left the left wing hanging on the universal
joint connector aft of the wing, with the leading edge of the wing
laying prone on the ground. DSH thought it would not be sucked into the
prop when the engine started. Well it did get sucked into the prop and
now I have to mortgage the house to pay for the damages. All that DSH
had to do was remove one bolt holding the wing on, place the wing out
of harms way, and every thing would have been fine. Pete [No I am not a

Hi all,
I had been having trouble with the rollout after landing since
installing the 36 in. crome molly gear legs , and large wheels I was
always behind the airplane and was and was over controlling , just
couldn't
seem to get it right. I figured it had to get better with practice,
Today was what I thought was the perfect day to practice X wind
landings---8 to 10 mph direct X wind swinging about 20degrees ever 30
seconds
or so , piece of cake before the gear change. I started crow hoping
made 15 or 20 some of them were ragged enough that I was glad no one
was watching. To make a long sad story shorter but not much
happier , I had a really hard ground loop, bent both axels the right
one 45 degrees down---wheels went out at the top-- because of the
plane skipping sideways . didn't bend the cage or the gear, but hit
the right
wing on the ground. Don't know much damage , I do know the trailing
edge spar has a 6in bow in it , trailing edge bent up,and there is
loose fabric at the rear of the last two bays. Will talk with Bryan
Melborn and Kolb tomorrow and see what they
recommend for an inspection. Now believing That Homer knew what he was
doing when he designed the gear so the plane would be easy to land , I
have already put the gear back like it came from the factory.
Hats off to Larry C and others that fly with the long gear. I think
I'll stay stock for a while.

Frank,
Sorry that you had trouble with the gear legs. While I don't do too
many landing on pavement, the ones that I have, had shown none of the
tendencies that you describe at all. In fact the gear legs that I do use
are quite forgiving and springy and I wouldn't trade back at all.

because apparently they are quite booked up. I was told a month before it
ships.

No shame, no regrets, but consider it a survivable learning experience.

Hi Kolbers,,, I regret it but I am in position that I need to sell
my MK111Xtra-912. I have discussed with some other builders and the
price I have come up with is $25,000.00 for the plane, I also have a
trailer that was built to haul the plane. The trailer has 1200 miles on
it just from Mitch to Florida and I will sell both for $30.000.00. I
will send pictures of the trailer by request and more pictures of the as
well.
Anyone interested contact me on the Kolb list or directly to me at

up there. I really hate to get rid of it but for now I do unless
something changes. It's got a 912 UL 80 Hp. and 3 blade Warp drive prop
and I believe it has between 75 and 80 Hrs on the engine ' Not even

Tony,
If you can have things ready for the switch over, you could make a
flight with the old prop, change over to the new prop and repeat the
same flight pattern - if you have a GPS you could fly down a straight
road for some distance and see what effect it has on your cruise
speed and climb rate for each prop. About as close of comparison as
your going to get. Since it is a new prop you might not be able to
do a back to back comparison as you will need to swap the prop,
adjust the pitch, and tweak it in.
