Vic,
GOOD for you. And you are fortunate to live in such a wild and beautiful area.
I landed our Cherokee 140 at Millinocket due to low oil pressure on my first x-country
trip in it, on the way to Presque Isle, ME. I learned at that stop that
my new-to-me engine was using oil at the rate of one quart per 3 hours flight.
It turned out that the cylinders were glazed from poor break-in technique after
major overhaul by previous owner.
I sure am glad Millinocket was where it was when the oil pressure went south. Lots
of forest in all directions with no good place to put down a Cherokee.
I know you are going to enjoy your Kolb.

confusing things going on without adding to them on purpose.
Lovely pic though!

LOL
THAT confused, eh ?
I guess I could always fly lower but then I'd be a risk of being run
over by an amish buggy.

In addition to a lot of treess, is a lot of water. I remember seeing a
moose and a what I thought was a J3 Cub on floats on my approach to the big
paper mill and Millinocket AP right at dark. Turns out the J3 Cub was
actually a J3 or N3 Kitten ultralight. Looked like a full sized Cub in the
air.

I think you previously posted this one, or one nearly like it.
Tugs at my heart strings and makes me want to land right there next to you
all and the gang.
Tremendous contrast in one respect, yet similar thinking and interest on the
other.

I fully agree with Pat. Any non-conventional running lights will only
confuse other pilots -- hopefully without causing a crash. But they
WILL get the attention of FAA types, and they won't be happy. And
then there are those nuts who feel compelled to report all oddities
to the FAA.

....Not to beat this already thoroughly dead horse any more than necessary
(do y'all realize we
are approaching SEAFOAM territory with this string...?)...
But...
Both military and civilian aircraft were widely equipped with "passing
lights" in the 1930's and all the way up through the early
1950's. These were powerful, high-intensity red sealed- beam lights about
like landing lights... usually installed in the port wing or the nose,
designed to be turned on during bad visibility, or in high traffic areas to
prevent collisions with approaching head-on traffic. The standard
rule was to clear the oncoming traffic showing the light by turning to your
right, his left.
I can recall them installed in the landing light housings of C-46, C-47,
AT-6, BT-13, Fairchild, Waco, Beech, and many others... Was unable
to find any reference to their use in the current FAR's, but they were
certainly in wide use around airport traffic areas as a safety device
when I was a kid back in the stone age...
Unless the regs have changed, showing a red light in the forward aspect
should not be a problem...been done before.
Worth what ye paid fer it...

[quote="Eugene Zimmerman"]Tom,
I stuck a couple of small LED lights on the top of my lift struts.
They are mounted in a small piece of lexan inserted into the top of
the strut. They are clear when off, and RED when turned on.

Greetings,
Gene that is a great picture of you and the moon.
I have using LED position lights on my FireStar for about 4 years, the GA
pilots wish they could install them on their airplanes. I posted this vid
eo about 3 years ago, 2 minutes into the video it shows my LED lights very
well.
