The second time is the charm, I guess. The first time I shot this video I
didn't see the streaks on the wind screen until I watched the video footage
so yesterday I was extra thorough in making sure the lexan was spotless.

Looks good Rick. Now all you need to do is a touch and go on every sand
bar, or stop and do a little fishing.

Some of the sandbars certainly look long enough, but I'd have to get out on
them to look them over before I'd try it. Sure would be fun, though.

Those sand bars look very doable to me. Some look like they have a lot
of gravel in them, which makes them even more suitable.
Before one lands out, they must accept the fact that if they break the
airplane, it may be very difficult to retrieve for repair.

Retrieving a plane off the sand bar looks simple to me. Do it by
water. In Alaska we land on sand/gravel bars all the time. You just
need to look them over carefully before you set down.

Hauck and Herb,
Regarding my Question: I got a new 3/4" aluminum tail wheel rod/spring
from Travis. It fits kind of loose into both the tail wheel bracket and the
steel fuselage tube. What is a good way to shim this to make a better fit?
Thanks to all of you for giving me some good ideas to modify the tail rod
installation. I am leaning toward using metal tape wrapped around the rod
for a snug fit. In fact I already tried it on the tail wheel end and it
works great.

Well...I have been fortunate enough to make quite a few off field and
sand bar landings in my mkIII, in Alaska, my self, Knik River, a spot
somewhere near the Dalton Highway south of Cold Foot, an unknown river
30 miles east of Deadhorse, and on the beach of the Arctic Ocean 12
miles south of Barrow, where Wiley Post and Wil Rogers were killed in
1935, to name a few. Some of those would have taken a helicopter and a
lot of money to retrieve me and my mkIII.
Many of the sand bars on the Tallapoosa, Coosa, and Alabama Rivers are
very landable, but to rescue a broken mkIII would be very difficult and
expensive.
I had my Ultrastar rescued from a swamp 1/2 mile from Wetumpka Airport
08A by an old H-19, in 1985. Lucky for me, my buddy owned and flew the
H-19. It didn't cost me more than a six pack. Without the helicopter,
it would have been a very difficult mission to accomplish.

I'm being told that you can get genuine Rotax engine parts (e.g. pistons - with
the same part numbers as in CPS, LEAF or Lockwood catalogs) from Ski Doo dealers
- at a significant savings.
Anyone know whether this is true or not? They probably won't sell to someone who
says they're for aircraft use. But I'd like to know if anyone knows if Ski Doo
uses the same parts we use.

I made my statement tongue and cheek, about the touch and goes, but if I
was going to do it, I would use the same technique that works in snow.
Touch it down lightly with lots of power, let it settle a bit, then go
around and see what kind of a rut you made. One thing that seemed
noticeable to me was that it seemed to take a lot of ground for you to
take off on the grass. Once in the air it climbed pleasingly quickly,
but I thought that it took a lot of runway to get off. Hard to tell on
video. My point is don't short your self, because sand if it is fluffy
will cause a lot of drag. I have never had the guts to do a water skiing
routine with mine, so I don't know how fast you need to be to "walk" on
water.
On my trip back from Texas with the Firestar, I touched down on the
Great Salt Lake. It felt gooey, so I pulled all the throttle I could get
and got back on top of it and got off the ground. I almost needed a
change of pants afterward realizing what would have been if I had slowed
too much to get back airborne.
Have fun, but do it carefully,
Larry
