    Subject: UltraStar tailwheel strut
The mention a few days ago of a fiberglass rod for the tailwheel strut got me wondering. I'm having a problem with the tailwheel strut on my UltraStar. It was bent a bit when I got the plane, looks like it had been bent and straightened a few times. It bent, and the 5/8 tube crinkled a bit, right at the end of the 3/4" tube it slips into. I've straightened it out twice myself, but it keeps bending=85 the crinkled are weakens it, of course, but I don't know how much it tends to bend when straight. One solution is to cut it and splice a new piece of 5/8", but will it bend again? Was this a common problem with the UltraStar? It tends to get bent not on landing, but when moving the plane around with the wings folded (at least that's where I felt it bend the last time). One problem may be that when I got the plane, the 3/4" tube was cut off straight rather than angled per the plans (I've since corrected this), which makes a much worse stress concentration on the inner tube, contributing to its bending (and weakening) the first time. I could extend the 3/4" tube farther back which would make it quite a bit stronger, but it would also be less springy, which could lead to damage elsewhere; damage which would be harder to repair. Or go to a fiberglass rod (is that original on later Kolbs or is it an owner mod?). A 5/8" solid fiberglass rod is slightly weaker in simple bending than 5/8OD x .035 steel tube, but it's less prone to local crippling which seems to be my problem. Or perhaps somebody's come up with a better solution? -Dana -- Government cannot give you anything it does not first take away from someone.

Will, The video show quite dramatically the difference in light output. Do you know the current draw of the halogen? I'm considering replacing the broken LED landing lights on my Slingshot and the halogen sure look like a better solution if the price and current are not too high. If you could let us know your supply source too that would be very helpful. Thanks, Will. BTW, when are you coming to Buffalo again? Thom in Buffalo

    - Dana- Which way is the tube bending?- Sideways, or up (from bouncing) ?- Next, do you know if the factory specified tubing of that particular g rade, or having it hardened?- Is it original? -My Firestar does have a fiberglass rod tail spring.- No bends or cracks, but I'm careful to lift it when going sideways around the yard.- I worry more about bending the t ubing on the "skeg", or doing some kind of damage to the main fuselage tube .- I seem to remember that the Ultrastar tail spring was longer, though. - Could be wrong. - ------------------------- ------------------------- Bill Sullivan ------------------------- ------------------------- Windsor locks, Ct. ------------------------- ------------------------- -FS 447

Gentlemen, Here is a picture that I just received from Steven Green. Homer had just finished applying his autograph to one of his children. It was taken at the Kolb Homecoming in 2004. I look at that signature every time I fly. I feel grateful and wish I'd had a chance to meet him. Dana: Normalized 4130 steel tubing makes a very poor spring, unless heat treated, of course. The tail wheel strut should be a spring. I use .120" wall 4130 heat treated to 48 RC for my tail wheel strut on the mkIII. An US could use something with a thinner wall, like .090". I have also shortened tail wheel struts dramatically on all three model Kolbs I built, US, FS, mkIII. john h mkIII A 5/8" solid fiberglass rod is slightly weaker in simple bending than 5/8OD x .035 steel tube, but it's less prone to local crippling which seems to be my problem. Hi Tom, I don't remember where I purchased the halogen light set, it could have be en at an auto parts store or Walmart. JC Whitney sells a set that look jus t like the ones I have. http://www.jcwhitney.com/optilux-driving-light-sets/p2003717.jcwx?skuId= 151320 I don't know how much current they draw but I have to charge the battery after I land because they do suck the life out it if they are on for too long. This is why I'm trying to replace the bulbs with the LED lights I have one more set of LED lights I need to experiment with, will post the results as soon as I have one mounted. I think Dick Kuntzleman's landing lights are the best way to go. I don't fly much at night or else I would buy a set. http://www.kestrobes.com/beacon.htm#LL1 Regards, Will Uribe FireStar II 407 hrs. Primarily, it does a great job at night with its 100 watt halogen replaceable bulb, which is guaranteed for 10,000 hours. john h mkIII I think Dick Kuntzleman's landing lights are the best way to go. After moving to a field with more traffic, much of it training and private jets, felt the need to increase my visibilty. Found LED light strips (12V) on ebay that are switchable between flashing and steady on. No substitute paying attention or Dick Kuntzleman's stuff, but made me feel a little better and the price was right (about $12). Thank you Marcus and also the Homer Kolb Family. You have helped us all. Thank you for the Christ honoring testimony. It is always a help to me to know that people like your Dad (very special as an individual, as a designer, a mechanic, an aviator, etc. and oh yes, as a family man) also have/had a daily walk with Christ. God bless you all. Bob MkIIIX builder

Check out the Show Me units - Their a Wig-Wag flasher unit like used on emergency vehicles like police cars. I have one of these on my plane which drives a pair of driving lights for the purpose of recognition lights and it works good. The unit I have allows you to select flash both, alternate flash, or both lights on. Also check the wattage of your landing lights and what a unit can handle. They can be purchased with wire pig tails or screw terminals, I got the one with screw terminals. Also there is flash rate, I got the slowest I could get which comes out to be a second on, a second off. I think mine cost me around $45 dollars a few years back - I use it for switching recognition (driving) lights on my ultralight. http://shop.store.yahoo.com/bcssales/shomranheadf.html Do a search on Google.com for Able 2 & Show ME wig wag flashers. There is a lot of price variation between places that sell them, I got mine from the manufacturer - they had the best price. jerb At 06:20 AM 7/13/2010, you wrote: > >After moving to a field with more traffic, much of it training and >private jets, felt the need to increase my visibilty. I was about to give up on recommending SUPER video converter when I ran into a run around trying to download the latest version. Turned out it won't download with Chrome and even with IE it was rather arcane to download. You have to hit three separate buttons to get the download going and you have to be careful or you'll get an evaluation version of another editor called AVS. That all said, it is a good translator program that made changing from .mov files from my little Nikon point and shoot cameras into .avi files that Movie Maker could digest. It, too, is freeware. One thing I don't like about these helmet cams is that you never really know if you're shooting anything. I have an AT2K from Oregon Scientific and more than once I've returned with nothing. I only use it as a backup now or to take a second POV. If you shop around you'll find there are many of the little point and shoot or better cameras that will take good video, I use a Fuji S1500 now, and having that LCD display on the back with the big red dot and REC in the corner is nice reassurance that everything is working. Dana, FYI Fiberglass tail rod was standard on my original FireStar and also on my buddy's KXP. It worked great on turf, but was too springy on pavement. When I taxied on pavement, the spring would start oscillating and the nose and tail would start going up and down. This would get worse and I would have to stop to get it to settle down. Then as soon as I started to taxi it would start doing it again. Bill Varnes Original Kolb FireStar Audubon NJ

Well guy's it has been an interesting afternoon. The makers of the camera that I bought (CountourHD Camera by Vholdr) sent me an authorization to return the camera for repair. The computer would not recognize the camera, none of the software would work without that. I actually liked the camera and thought that it took good pictures, however my problems with the camera were compounded by having to use Quick time to edit the movies. I managed to retrieve them by using a card reader adapter. I could not edit them without purchasing Quick Time Pro, which with much trepidation I did. The program has little in the way of a manual, but after most of an afternoon of trial and error I did get enough of an edited movie to use. Unfortunately Quick Time was not able to read any of the music files or CD's that I possessed? so I couldn't add a sound track. I spent another two or three hours trying to find a fix for that and after three phone calls and quite a bit of time waiting on hold I could find no help at all. I finally tried to get a refund for a program that did not work, they of course refused, but gave me a number where I could talk to an , undoubtedly cute, Filipino gal who suggested that I needed to buy yet another program so that Quick Time might know what a music file was. Understandably, I declined. I am returning the camera to Amazon rather than sending it in for a fix. Geeez, I thought Microsoft was bad, but Apple is worse, perhaps the translation from Mac to windows is the problem. I get the version listed with k-lite. Get the full version. I play everything from RM, WMV, Quick Time, h.264, DVX, etc. It is freeware and about 14 - 16 meg download. It works fine with all of the Winders stuff. Tim Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=304697#304697

I forgot to add that I did download two or three programs that would convert the programs to an AVI file, however the quality of the result was no better than the little spy camera that I have been using, therefore it is much easier to just use it than do all that other crap. I am going to try another camera, hopefully I will have better results. Thanks to all of you for the suggestions on the downloads, I at least picked up a couple of good programs that did work just fine, unlike the ones that I paid for.
