The attached photo may help see how the flat leaf spring type tail wheel mount
is installed on my Slingshot. This replaced the original standard Kolb installation
after it broke. The Slingshot tail is very heavy compared to most Kolbs
so this extra heavy duty spring arrangement is warranted.

Here is my opinion:
If you like it, why change the engine out? As set up now, you have plenty of extra
power. A Firestar with a 503 is a great performing plane.
I do not have a lot of flight hours or years of experience, but I do have over
100 hrs in an underpowered Firestar. The last thing you want to do is fly a marginally-powered
aircraft, no fun & dangerous. I'd stick with the way it's set
up now, it's a proven design.

Bill,
I've never weighed it but would guess by what it feels like when I have to lift
it that in 3-point stance it is 100-110 lb. Current empty weight is about 530
lb. so about 20% of the total weight is on the tail in 3-point attitude.

GeoB,
If want a lighter engine, I would look for a Rotax 277, it has about 5 more
hp than the Zenoah which is actually 22 HP I think. (I presume wanting a
legal UL is the reason for the smaller engine.) We flew a FS with a 277 and
it did ok ... as I recall it had about 700 fpm climb on a good day; less on
other days. It think you would be disappointed with a Zenoah, but you need
to determine what your climb requirements are. We had the 277 on a KXP; if
you have an early FS with 5 rib wing, etc., and it is lightly built with not
too many weight adding options, you'll probably do a little better than we
did with the KXP.

The early Firestar doesn't meet Part 103 limits even with a Rotax 377 engine. In
fact, a Rotax 503 is too much power for that 5-rib airframe although a later
model 7-rib wing can handle it. The 377 provides plenty of climb performance
for a 200 lb pilot. I don't think you would be satisfied with the 277 performance,
but it would fly.
Just my opinion ...

Ralph you are correct... with one possibility. if there is a
altimiter setting window ( kallsman ) window that is adjusted for the
proper barometer setting... the altitude should read equal... if not
adjusting the altimeter for the proper barometric reading. your
statement is correct.

Subject: | Critique my Fuel System. |
Hello all, his is my first post. I recently bought a Kolb FS II and since have
been spending a lot of time browsing this forum and some others. It seems the
fuel system is kind of a weak point and many people have a lot of good ideas on
what the best setup is. I thought about it and kind of decided what I would
like to do.
The Firestar i bought has a very simple fuel system, which is good....but id like
to add a little more with a few changes. Currently it has the original Kolb
tanks w/pickups made from fuel line w/weights and pickups on the end. Then it
just goes to a Y fitting outside the tanks to join the two, then to a aircraft
spruce glass fuel filter...and to the pulse pump. Simple and works...however
id like to add a back-up pump, not have fuel line in the tanks and eventually
a gascolator.
What i would like to do:
Kolb Tanks w/ "TNK" all metal top feed fuel pickups -> gascolator -> fuel pump
-> fuel filter -> Pulse pump. Using NAPA black auto fuel line throughout the entire
systems.
Here is another thing....instead of having the main fuel line pulling from both
fuel tanks (doubling the chance to suck up air for some reason)...i would like
to have it only pull from ONE tank, and then have another facet pump to be able
to transfer fuel from the 2nd tank to the "main" tank. I like this idea because
it eliminates a top-feed that might be problematic and if the pump fails
(which it prob wont) you will just have less fuel and can land sooner. And later
on i could add an aux tank to the pax seat with the same concept...
A simple picture of all this should be at the bottom.
Now for my questions:
1. It is ok to mount the gascolator and facet pump ABOVE the tanks as they are
top-feed. I realize the gascolator and pump are best suited at the lowest points.....but
they should still be able to help above the fuel tanks as well...right?
The gas still flows through the lines to collect any water that might of
been in the tanks, and the pump should still be able to function. (However the
only issue is i wont be able to sump the tanks themselves.)
Will the fuel pump still be able to serve as a backup from this elevated point?
2. Which Facet Fuel pump should i order? What PSI level? And where do you guys
get the fittings to screw in that the fuel line plugs onto? What are the best
fuel line clamps?
So thats it basically. Id really just like to have the absolute most reliable system.
I know that some really like bottom fed systems, but as long as they are
plastic tanks with the feeds held in by some push-fitting pieces...ill be a
little uneasy about it. Im just going to try to work with what i have for now.
Let me know what you think, thanks!!

Boyd, isn't adjusting the altimeter for field elevation the same as adjusting the
pressure in the Kollsman window?
There were some comments awhile back about setting the altimeter for zero elevation
or field elevation. As an ultralight pilot, I didn't go anywhere and would
set it to zero at the field I flew from. I did this for many years and got used
to it. I continued this habit when I got the Kolbra and justified that I wanted
to know exactly how high I was above the ground. All is fine and dandy until
I go a few hundred miles to the next airport. Then I'm wondering why the
altimeter is reading wrong when I land. Needless to say, I have changed my ways
and adjusted my altimeter for field elevation before takeoff. I still zero it
out on the Firestar because I don't go anywhere with that.
I also notice airshow pilots do the same thing. They adjust it for MSL field elevation
to fly to the airport they are performing at and then zero it out before
they perform.

OK.. the deal here is that I am not a pilot. I don't know diddly about tail-draggers.
I have had a few lessons in tricycle gear planes. I am *playing* with the
idea of using a Generac engine on this plane. Generac is not quite ready yet.
I might sell the existing 503 for funds, though it is a fairly remote possibility.
Positing such an action, I wondered if I could install one of my Zenoahs
just to learn ground handling of the tail-dragger. Which led me to try to imagine
what would happen if I was doing crow-hops or fast taxiing and ran out
of runway. Would the Zenoah have enough power to do a gentle go-around, or should
I just crash into the woods for a fiery screaming death?

Ralph, Adjust the Kollsman window for barometric pressure and it should read
field elevation, conversely, set field elevation and the Kollsman reads
local barometric pressure. Setting field elevation at zero is only good so
long as barometric pressure remains the same. It you fly to another field
where the barometric pressure is the same, you get the difference between
the two field's elevations. If you take your Kolb into class alpha airspace
the kollsman window is set to 29.92" regardless of local elevation or
barometer reading.

I have read various hp ratings. I have two different size carbs which were used
on this engine right from the factory... a Mikuni pumper and a reg'ler Mikuni
slide-valve. I have a round fat short muffler and pipe, and I also have a tuned
pipe (expansion chamber) with a rudimentary muffler on the end. I assume that
the hp is not the same between all the models because of the various stock
equipment like this.

A Facet will suck uphill but personally I like to have it below the lowest point
on the pickup.
A straight tube with a tapered end is good for a dip tube. I have an aversion
to holes in the bottom of
a plastic jug. The only thing I can say good about the plastic tank is I don't
need a gauge. I'm aware of their frailty.
I had a regulator. I removed it because, after some study, realized that if it
failed, it would be to zero flow.
A serious regulator would return fuel to the tank as on a FI system. (bypass)

No Kallsman window, just a knob to set the altitude. Which I haven't touched for
several months, as I watch it fluctuate. It is sensitive enough that when driving
down the freeway it moves up and down as I go on overpasses and such.

Subject: | Critique my Fuel System |
Per the Facet Installation Instructions (P/N 42664 01-04):
*Required Item:* In-line fuel filters need to be mounted on the pump's *
inlet* port.
Think about it, especially when using a rebuildable filter like the
Clearview, if you mount the filter on the inlet side and it leaks you get a
few air bubbles in the line. Mount it on the pressure side and you get a
stream of gasoline spraying about your airplane.
Using a second Facet for a transfer pump. I have one on my removable long
range tank. It flows 6.8 gallons in 38 minutes, barely faster than my 582
consumes fuel. For my regular system I use a single Facet (low pressure unit
P/N 40105) and a modified 3 way Weatherhead selector valve between tanks
that gives me Off, Right, Left and Both to control which tank I draw from.
Of course it's experimental aviation and you can do as you like.

Subject: | Mark III C landing gear replacement |
I finally got the Kolb Mark III ready to fly. Before I did the taxi test I
noticed the wheels were slightly canted in at the top. As I had never flown
a Mark IIIC before, I thought this was normal. I taxied around for about 15
to 20 minutes and got the tail flying 4 times; main wheels never left the
ground. When I got back to the hanger I did a post flight inspection on the
aircraft and the first thing I noticed was the wheels were very noticeably
canted in at the top about 15 degrees. It is obvious that the previous owner
dropped the aircraft in for a hard landing and attempted to straighten the
axles. Anyway, I have ordered a new set of landing gears from Travis at the
Kolb Company. My plans do not have instructions for replacing the landing
gear. Does anyone have any advice or instruction on how to replace the
landing gear on the Mark III C?
I know it has one bolt that goes through the main tube in the bottom of the
cage and the new legs do not have the holes drilled. M y problem is how to
index the gear and drill the holes properly.
Thanks:
Steve Simmons

Steve, aluminum legs or steel?
Fly it with what's on it first. Then the new ones will stay straight
longer :)
If the "bent" legs are aluminum and you are replacing them with the
same, all the final alignment is done at the axle socket.
You will need a string line (or chalk) to determine straight ahead then
two parallel lines at the wheel width splitting the difference
to the front. Tail boom for guide.
Most builders, myself included, put in a little toe-in. Perfectly
parallel is ok. This is not a race car.
The stock aluminum legs get the alignment adjusted by rotating the axle
socket. Doesn't take much to change a lot.

Boyd, isn't adjusting the altimeter for field elevation the same as
adjusting the pressure in the Kollsman window?
ralph
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
yes that is the same.... and if you adjust the kollsman window the the
proper barometric pressure.... the needle will show the elevation.....
if there is a barometric pressure change and you don't change the
kollsman window. the as the barometric pressure rises, the altitude
indicated should decrease.
I always set the kallsman window to show the correct barometric
pressure.... when talking with other pilots and trying to remain free
and clear of their paint. all the pilots I know use altitude readings
of msl.... not agl... I could see a benefit of using agl if doing
aerobatic at an air show. but that is usually in a closed airspace
environment

I'm glad that Kolb will be there and I will stop by and say hi. I will be trailering
my MKII to Airventure in the toy hauler Monday night and staying until Friday.
I hope to camp in the Ultralight camping area in the trailer. Hoping to
meet other Kolber's out there so stop by. I'll put some updated pictures of the
trailer on the web site this weekend.

Subject: | Re: Mark III C landing gear replacement |
It is easier than you can imagine. Go to Lowes, and buy a long bronze grounding
rod, it is the same diameter as your axles. Jack up the fuselage so that the
landing gear is off the ground, do it by placing something under the fuselage,
not under the gear. Remove the old gear, insert the new landing gear legs with
the lower gear leg fittings already attached to the new legs, minus the axles
and wheels, etc. Force the bronze rod through the axle tubes. It will take quite
a bit of bending into a curve, and will require lubricant and a rubber hammer,
but it will go. The axles will now be perfectly aligned. Mark the holes
on the legs. Take the legs to a friends house who has a drill press. Drill the
holes, put it all back together. That's how I did it back in '95, and it still
tracks as straight as a string.
Now take the bronze rod back to Lowes, tell them (something) and get a refund.
Or you can do what I did, I still have my bronze rod hanging on the garage wall,
with the Lowe's receipt rubber banded to it. Some day my kids can deal with
it...
