John B:
Looks good to me.
James Tripp took me up to Gantt Interntional Airport last week to crank my
mkIII, first time in over two months. Battery was down a bit. My solar
charger is not keeping up like it should. We jumped it off with one of
those small jump start rigs. I need to get me one of those when I start
flying again. The 912ULS popped right off and ran like a clock after a few
seconds to get her pipes cleaned out. If I could get in the airplane, I
think I could fly it, but the grass on the airstrip is near waist high.
Clutch on the McCormick W-9 is way to strong for me to try to push with my
bum leg, so the bush hogging will have to wait until I get in a little
better shape. It was great to see, feel, and hear the airplane come alive
and run, even though I could not fly it.

I'm installing my ASI and Altimeter for my Mark IIIC. I'll install a pitot tube
under the nose for total pressure, but am thinking I will not have a separate
static port but just leave the instruments open to the cockpit for static pressure.
Anyone have experience with that? I'm assuming that since the cockpit
isn't sealed, the static pressure inside is fairly close to outside ambient.

Don't assume that. Depending on the shape of the cockpit fairing and
openings, the pressure inside can be considerably higher or lower than the
static pressure... and it can change as AOA changes. Still, many do that
and sometimes it works fine.
I don't have a cockpit on my UltraStar, just an instrument pod between my
legs, and it was vented there. Every time I moved my foot the indicated
airspeed changed. I've since made a concentric tube pitot tube, with four
holes in the outer tube for static air. Works great.

My MKIII read 10 mph too high with my static vented inside cockpit (Low
pressure) in my case. I ordered pitot/static combo (L shaped unit) from
Aircraft Spruce that was inexpensive and Airspeed was correct.

Some of you may remember I have been shopping for a new camera with
better quality and longer recording time. I had good advise, that I of
course chose to ignore, and bought a Holdr HD camera. While it took some
very good videos, I could not play them on my TV, had to use Quick Time
to view them, had to buy Quick Time Pro from Apple to edit it. (The
program would not read music without buying another program.) If I
converted it to AVI, there was no sound and the quality was degraded
with each conversion. Some of the clips wouldn't play. The Camera had
something wrong with it so that the computer would not recognize it.
They offered to repair or replace the camera. No thanks!
I decided to go with John Bickhams recommendation of the Tachyon XC. It
is bigger, but quite a bit cheaper than the Vholder. My problem was with
the mounting of the camera. John put his on his wind screen and his
apparently does not have as much vibration as mine. I tried using a side
mount with a foam base, but there was harmonic vibration in a test that
I did this morning.
So I reverted to my original mounting point and put it on the nose. The
view is better and the vibration is less.
I was a bit short on camera threaded screws, but this one will do until
I get another one. You will notice that there is no padding under the
swivel mount, but I think the video is acceptable.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Y7C-lShJdc
I just viewed it on You Tube, and of course the quality sucks, It looks
great on the computer and on the TV, but I guess one can't complain.
One other comment, I viewed John's video this morning, and while I may
end up on my back in case of a forced landing out here in the desert,
and I may die of dehydration while trying to walk out, I most likely
won't hit anything harder than my head, unlike all those closely packed
trees.

Actually I have done just that and it is surprising how fast and often
your heard snaps around when you are flying, especially close to the
ground. The brain makes it seem smooth, but watching it can give you
whiplash, plus the lexan even though it is clear, does not do anything
to improve the quality. I personally prefer to have a clear and
unfettered view ahead of the plane. There are no bars in the way and
the quality is not further degraded by the windscreen. All you have to
do is point the airplane to see what you see, you just have to remember
that the objects are closer than they appear.

Very well done Richard. The advantages are: doesn't weaken the rib as much as
drilling and riveting
and if you need to recover you don't have to drill 'em out.
-besides, it looks neat.
