I found a hole wearing through the radiator hose of the Kolbra yesterday. The only
reason I found it was because a fellow pilot sprung a leak on his 912 Titan
on his way to Idaho a week ago. That part of the hose cannot be seen in a preflight
without feeling the back of it. It was rubbing against the vent tube of
the oil cannister which even had a rubber sheath around it to protect it from
wearing through.

Yep. I wanted to use bias tape on the final outboard rib, as the fabric at the
front drops off at a fairly steep angle, and the straight tape would wrinkle badly.
Unfortunately, the only bias tape I have has pinked edges, so it will be
slightly different from the rest of the tapes, but I don't think it will show
much after it is painted.
Good catch.

I bought a Firestar KX from a Don Keller in Sylvania OH. He bought it from a Don
or Donald Jacobs (best he can remember) in the Louisville KY area. I am trying
to find its build history and when first flown? I hope someone recognizes
this plane and can help. Approximately 100 hours on the meter and very well
built and detailed.

Subject: | RE: Kolb-List Digest: 22 Msgs - 07/21/10 |
Hello Gang:
I want to say up front that I respect my friend Richard and know he is a great
innovator. He has many great ideas. He has gained much experience as he has
rebuilt Kolbs. I am very appreciative that he was actually able to come to my
house and inspect my wing assembly work.
I also have great respect for John H. one of our mentors. When I was considering
"rivets or stitching" I talked to both Richard and John H. but also Travis
at Kolb.
Travis suggested I do an experiment. At his suggestion I took a small piece (1')
of the rib size tubing and drilled a 1/8th inch hole (the size of the rivet
used by Kolb). I then bent the tubing to see how much effort was necessary to
break the tubing. It of course broke where the hole was. As per Travis' recommendation
I then drilled another piece and installed a rivet of the type used
to secure the fabric. With the rivet expanded/pulled in the hole, the tubing
broke again but only after much greater force. Installing the rivets on the
ribs actually compensates for the holes drilled in the tubing.
Lord willing and of course, if I don't do anything careless (as I have been know
to do), I hope I will not have to "rebuild" my wings or ribs. Any serious damage
would probably necessitate replacing ribs anyway as well as fabric --- stitching,
rivets or otherwise.
I decided to go with what Kolb recommended, and John. I am satisfied that following
Kolb's
recommendation-- using rivets-- I have a strong wing. I did space the rivets in
the three root ribs at about 2 1/2" so as to keep the fabric from "drumming".
All the rib-stitchers can say "I told you so" if I am wrong.
Thanks Matte for the list..
Bob

Hi Bob G:
Congratulations on completing your wings. That is a big milestone done.
Don't want folks to think I recommend anything. Normally, I don't.
Usually, I tell you what I do and you can make your own decision on which
way to go.
Still can not walk without my walker, but getting better every day. My goal
is to be back on my feet by 1 Sep. My physical therapist says I can do it.
My medical and BRF have expired, as have Miss P'fer's Annual Inspection, but
we have all that lined up as soon as I am able to get'er done.
If I am good to go 1 Sep, I will most likely make my annual road trip West.
If not, we'll do it next year, and plan on making MV 2011, and for sure the
Rock House, Larry and Karen Cottrell's next May.
Times a wasting...

Chris and others, I won't get the Kolbra fixed before Oshkosh so I will be driving
in. I want to replace both the inlet and outlet hoses.
The hose is made by "Gates". I wonder if it's a specialty hose or typical auto
radiator hose?

I use/used Gates or any other premium 1" ID radiator hose for my three 912

The answers are
1. Yes
2. Supposedly at each annual inspection - although if your mode C is accurate,
you won't attract any attention...
3.About $400 if you get lucky, more if you don't.

Hi Bill Sullivan,
Thanks for asking. I have finished repairing the metal components (left
wing & aileron, both elevators, boom tube, and fuselage fabric fairing
tubes) BUT, the weather around here is much too hot and humid for working fabric
and painting. I have never seen it this hot in June, and now we' re into
July which is always hot and humid, then comes the August 'Dog Days'.
Also, its my age (73). I cannot take the heat anymore, so I guess it will get
done a little later than I expected. Hope your repairs are going faster
than mine.

Kurt,
Thank you very much for posting that Ethanol Free Gas site. NJ state law
prevents any gas stations from selling Ethanol Free gas. But Pennsylvania
law does allow it and I have found one station within 60 miles. I passed
the info on to my friends at EAA Chapter 216 - South Jersey. Already two
fellows have gone there and purchased gas and a couple more are getting tanks
set up to do the same. So, thank you again for this information.
