Many years ago, I also had the same problem of small balls fouling the
plugs { this was on 2 cycl motor bikes } The solution turned out to be
the oil and its mix ratio . Also one brand of petrol seemed to have the
problem more than other brands. Must say I have never had the problem
with fresh lead free fuel of any brand . Down her we have not gone to
ethanol fuels yet { or not that they will admit to} I believe our
fuel to be of poor quality and expensive at $1.76 a Ltr .

        Hey Guys,

Just a heads up on "Ethanol Free Gas".

A flying buddy of mine was using regular 87 octane for hundreds and
hundreds of hours and recently decided to try some of that gas
advertised as "Premium Ethanol Free Gas". He immediately experienced
engine problems with cyl head temps spiking dangerously high while egt
temps remained in the normal range and a near engine out with forced
emergency landing. Trailered the plane home and did all kinds of checks
with repeated engine run-ups, each with similar symptoms and results.
He finally removed all the "Ethanol Free" fuel and refueled with his
normal regular 87 octane,,,,,, and wouldn't you know it ,,,,,, it ran
perfectly as it always had for hundreds of hours.

My uninformed PERSONAL opinion is that whatever the refineries are
currently using instead of ethanol to meet octane specs is far worse
than ethanol, at least for Rotax 503 air cooled engines. One
observation we made was tiny tiny beads of some residue stuck to the
plugs. Our theory is that they acted as tiny glow plugs and seemed to
be causing detonation at higher power settings.

        Gene Z

Regardless ,,,,, based upon my personal observation of this
phenomena, I WILL NOT use "Premium Ethanol Free Gasoline" in my plane.

          Kurt,

Thank you very much for posting that Ethanol Free Gas site. NJ
state law prevents any gas stations from selling Ethanol Free gas. But
Pennsylvania law does allow it and I have found one station within 60
miles. I passed the info on to my friends at EAA Chapter 216 - South
Jersey. Already two fellows have gone there and purchased gas and a
couple more are getting tanks set up to do the same. So, thank you
      again for this information.

      Thanks.
If things go according to plan it will be in a trailer on it's way to Oshkosh in
a few hours. I would guess 2 weeks at least before the first flight.

All is stock, I just changed the tip bow shape, and added an aluminum angled section
to the outboard end of the aileron to contain the nav light and strobe.
So total square footage of the wing will be down a couple feet, due to the loss
at the front part of the wing where the original tip bow went straight out a
      bit before it curved back.

Seems torrential rains have flooded much of Wittman Field, including the UL
area. The UL airstrip is closed until it dries out enough to start using
without damage to the sod. Glad I did not make the flight up there. Would
be a bit disillusioning to sit at some rinky dink satelite airport waiting
for the strip to dry to get into OSH.

Here is a photo in memory of my flying buddy, John Williamson who died in
the crash of his Kolb Kolbra, 25 May 2008, at the Skinner Ranch, near Jordan
Valley, Oregon. I took this photo a few years ago 35 miles west of the Rock
House on the Alvord Desert. That's John W flying over and away from Miss
P'fer (P fer plane) sitting on the dry lake.

Thanks for all the responses. For those of you who are using the inexpensive pitot-static
probe from Aircraft Spruce (p/n 15144), what are the dimensions of
it? Is the position of the flange adjustable? If not, how far below the nose
      cone does it hang? Thanks.
