    > To use it, you have to thin the latex enough for your first coat that it will penetrate and encapsulate the fabric I understand this- but why would you not thin with water as this is water based paint? Are we looking for something here that thins like water yet dries faster? I have been staring at my FS-I (when I am not sitting in it making engine noises). It has no fabric on the fuse. The PO took it off and I know not how much of the frame was covered. There is a short piece of aluminum sheet from the pod back, it ends in front of the stick a few inches. What do most Kolbers use under the seat? Do you folks use fabric or metal or? Thanks! I will be studying all the Kolb material I can find on the FS. But so far I don't know about inspecting parts. I was looking it over and the bolt that extends into the frame that the wing hangs on looks like it is kinda hard to get to. How often should it be inspected? This is the bolt the universal joint for the folding wing attaches with. Thanks! As a buyer/flyer, and not a builder, I can say that for me what type of paint was used was never a consideration. The paint's condition and the fabric's condition mattered but what type of paint was of no concern to me. Perhaps it should be but never has been for me. I may or may not be typical in this regard. No way of knowing for certain. do not archive -------- Thom Riddle Buffalo, NY (9G0) Kolb Slingshot SS-021 Jabiru 2200A #1574 Tennessee Prop 64x32 The truth will set you free. Gang: I enjoy reading all the notes and have gleaned a lot of helpful information from the list, but could I suggest that when responding to something on the "list", that we delete all of the posts before and after the actual post to which we are responding. This takes a few extra moments but it saves us from having to read through a continuous repetition of the same posts. Just a suggestion. Bob

<< Dennis, what you are saying is now you are stuck with a passenger. I hope she's a cutie. BB >> Bob - my passenger was actually a grizzled older-than-me fellow who flies a weight-shift trike at my airport. He just bought a beautiful, low-time Firestar II, from Idaho. I took him up to give him some familiarity in the feel & handling of a Kolb. Still trying to talk my wife into flying with me some day. Flying is not exactly her passion, unfortunately. But a cutie she is indeed! << Any dihedral? Russ K >> Russ - I built my Mark-3 with about 3 degrees of dihedral, even tho' it was not called for in the plans. If doing this traded off a bit of "snappiness" in roll handling for improved stability, it is not noticeable to me! << Zulu Delta hunts for level and would just as soon dive as climb. Clearly I have more work to do. Rick G >> Rick - I've decided that my Mark-3 definitely flies more stable with a passenger. The stock pitch trim system seems to work well. But I believe the most improvement for my roll-diverging tendency came from installing the U-joint adjustment bracket from TNK. I had been flying my Kolb for years before realizing that one wing had a slightly greater angle of incidence than the other. (Duh ...) The bracket fixed that. Dennis K. Do not archive

Gliders are easier to balance out as they do not have to contend with a propeller torque reaction. But as soon as you hang on an engine and propeller to the air frame one has to counter act propeller torque. How does your plane balance out at best glide speed, with the engine at idle? Jack B. But for your finish coats, water and polypropylene glycol (windshield washer fluid if you are using blue or green paint) AKA Latex X-Tender for other colors to get good flow out and gloss. And there may be better alternates, that is just what I have used. Richard Pike MKIII N420P (420ldPoops) Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=309024#309024

Geo. I suppose I'm being a bit snide here with my remark, but I'd say you should take that joint apart to inspect it every time you trash your wing, or whenever you detect any evidence of excessive up and down, or lateral movement at that location. If I understand you correctly you are talking about the bolt that is actually a welded in part of the cage. I've never had one, or heard of one that needed to be replaced, but then again I seldom fold my plane. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=309045#309045

Thanks for the interesting ideas. > So if you are thinking you might sell your airplane any time soon, I wouldn't use latex I agree with the last few msgs in this thread. Your analysis seems right on, to me. Several reasons coalesce in generating my level of interest in this process. 1) I am so tight I squeak when I walk 2) I like to have things done well and right, and safely. 3) Materials are expensive and I have never covered a plane before. I wouldn't want to mess up a buncha expensive material. 4) seems to me that after we complete the gluing and shrinking of fabric, we are not really talking about becoming a lawn dart; we are talking about how LONG the fabric will be good. Folks talk about 25 years and such- my current covering is 24 years old and I think it is the original from Kolb. I don't have anywhere near that long. I doubt I have ten good years left. I haven't priced out the Stits process completely. I did chat with the Stuart Systems ppl. They quoted me an estimate of $2000. I don't have infinite money to sling around though I have enough to do a good job. I don't really care what happens to my plane after I'm gone. It looks like I can put a good quality covering on there for MUCH less than $2000. I'll go have fun flying around with the saved money. But I have NOT made a decision yet as I have several more systems to check out.
