I like the seat height as is. I have a sheep skin cover on the seats and
nothing else. When I first started flying the Kolb I thought the seats
were too low when taxi ing , I am now used to them and see no reason to
change. I am a bit on the short side at 5'7 so maybe that helps. The
only problem I have ever had was the ties holding the top of the seat
broke on 1 side , that was a uncomfortable ride home. I changed the ties
to some more robust ones and check these as part of the pre flight and
always carry some spares . I have never had to use them . The seats are
just right in flight . Since I did not build my Kolb I am only assuming
the seats are per the plans

Eddie,
enjoyed your videos.
What sort of compass is that and how is it attached to the windscreen?.
It looks a bit heavy to be just stuck on and I baulk at drilling holes
in the Lexan.

Hi Pat / all on list
To be honest I dont know the make of the compass ( I will check later
when I go down to the field) I think it is for a boat and has a hole
underneath for mounting on a strut of some sort .It was on the aircraft
when I bought it, but, held on with velcro in its current position. It
was usually on the floor before lift off because of bouncing along the
rough ( ish ) runways so I did drill the lexan and used a Brass screw
and nut to hold it in place but through another piece of lexan about 1 "
square outside the screen to spread the load away from the drilled hole
. if you look again you can just make out the corner of the extra lexan
slightly darker as it was from the original tinted ( and badly
scratched and cracked screen ) So far have had no problems with this
mounting ( after around 45 hrs ) and no signs of cracking or strain
around the mounting hole, and it went through some pretty firm arrivals
when I was teaching myself how to get the kolb back on the floor.
Probably helps that although it looks substantial the compass casing is
only plastic and so not actually very heavy . I have never checked to
any degree how accurate the compass is apart from making sure that it
shows as near as makes no difference the same heading as the runway
when taking off and landing . The type of flying I do does not really
need an accurate compass ( probably not at all ) . I am a lorry ( Truck
) driver and spend all week away from home and do approx 1800 to 2000
miles a week so at the weekend just getting airborne and floating around
the local area is the way I unwind. The last thing I want to do is sit
in something for hours on end travelling to and from somewhere again.
Thanks for the nice comments to all and when possible I will try
another video and maybe add some music or titles when I can work out
how its done

Thanks for the videos, Eddie. Always nice to see where others are flying. The
Irish Sea looked a lot calmer than our Lake Eire is most of the time, but at that
altitude it is hard to see the waves.
How much are you paying for petrol for your 582 these days?

Hi Thom
The sea was pretty flat it was a nice evening flight with just a few
bumps here and there in the circuit as the heat left the day the
advantage of flying in my local area is that if you get tired of
bouncing around you can always head out over the bay and find smooth air
for a bit of a rest before wrestling your way around the circuit.
Locally mogas is around =A31 16/ 17p per litre so filling to the brim
with fuel is around =A346 plus oil .Thankfully my 582 seems pretty
frugal compared to others here at Ince If just pottering around at about
50/55 mph it can be using around 12 litres per hour at full weight (390
kgs in the uk)

I know how you feel because I cannot push my plane into the hangar without help,
because it is uphill. But this pulley and track setup works great. I need the
track because the hangar is built on a slight slope, and not only does it slope
toward the front, it also slopes toward the side. So without the track to
guide the tailwheel, the airplane tries to crawl sideways when you winch it in.
You may not need that.
When I taxi in, I spin the tail around before shut down so that all I need to do
is attach the yoke to the tailwheel, then I stick a BIG screwdriver (2 handed
pull) through a loop in the end of the rope and just start walking backward
away from the hangar. When I get it pulled all the way in, the tailwheel drops
off the end of the ramp - then I know it's time to quit.
Maybe you can adapt something like this to your situation. It makes it possible
to get the airplane put away single handed.
Don't have any ideas about how to get it out tho - Make a towbar and use the tractor?

Richard P/Gang:
Looks like that works good for you.
I have always had ramps for mains and tailwheel in my hanger, which was
built for a FS, not a MKIII.
By the time I get back from my trek West, I should be healed enough to pull
all the old ramps out, regrade the hanger floor and hanger approach so they
are level, then build new ramps. Right now I still have to push up hill
somewhat to get the airplane out.
Thanks for the info.

However, after wrangling with the idea, I decided to just re-install
the OEM sling seats, and
see what you Kolb pilot guys say.
Mike

the sling seats at least for me were just bad, had to have foam just
to survive,,, then an hour or so was my limit. when I rebuilt I put in
some seats from a piper tomahawk,,, best mod I have ever done.

I dont know the make of the compass >>
Hi Eddie,
It looked a bit like a Silva that I used to have on my boat so you could
well be right. It was a sort of globe which could be mounted at all
angles.
With my Extra I think I have a greater expanse of unsupported Lexan than
you?.
I have been using a battery driven, very light plastic, car compasswith
a suction cup, from Halfords but it has given up the ghost and it
doesn`t seem to be on the shelves any more.
I don`t think there are many pilots who can fly within 5 degrees either
side of a given course, specially when its a bit thermic, so spot on
accuracy from a compass is wasted. There is always the one on the Garmin
anyway.
I didn`t realise that you had so many windmills along the coast up
there. Damn things are all over the place.I think that its just the
government trying to show us that they are doing something as they are
not very efficient. Putting the money into some tide driven electricity
production would, I think be a much better proposition
Cheers
Pat

Mike, I did not call the FAA about the fly-in. You are making assumptions that
are not true. This is slander and I won't put up with it.
Why not post something worthwhile on the list instead of complaining all the time?
Please take care of this issue Matt ....
Thanks,
Ralph

Subject: | Aug 28, 2010 flight video |
This morning, I flew my Slingshot about 20 minutes SE of my home airport (9G0)
to meet a friend who keeps his SkyRanger at Bloecher Farm airstrip (92NY). We
had planned to fly in his SkyRanger to Great Valley (N56) but when we got about
10 miles or so away, it was apparent that Great Valley was completely fogged
in. So we headed back north to look for a new airstrip not on the sectionals
that another pilot friend had found on Google Maps. On Google Maps it appeared
paved but that shot was apparently taken right after the compacted gravel runway
had been sprayed with tar.
The video's first short segment is of this undocumented airstrip a few miles NE
of Ellicottville, NY. It is situated up high in the hills so it was not fogged
in. From there we flew to our favorite breakfast location, Middlesex Valley
(4N2). It is a breakfast only, weekend only, summer only restaurant operated by
the owner/residents of this beautiful grass strip in the Finger Lakes section
of western New York.
Even though there are no Kolbs in this video I hope you enjoy it. What a great
day for flying it was this morning!

I'm sorry Mike, this is not what this list is about.
The list is to share information about Kolb aircraft and experiences flying them.
It's not about ruining reputations, name-calling, backbiting, hearsay, and gossip.
If this is what you are into, then take it off-list and go somewhere else.

John, Harbor Freight has some cheap 12V winched that with a couple of
strategically placed stakes, could be used to pull your Kolb in and out of
the hangar. My neighbor John does this with hie Bellanca Viking. The winch
pulls nice and slow so minor track changes are easy to make as the plane is
being pulled in or out. Might help you get back into the air sooner. Kolb
therapy is the best medicine I'm finding.
Good luck,
Rick Girard
