John Hauck: Are your seats the type sold with the Mark III kit? or have you done something different. I firgure you have spent more time in them than others. Comfort is definently a consideration. Does any one on the list have any type of "blower" installed on their aircraft? I refer to a blower that might be used to direct additional air over the cylinders during extended ground operations. Does anyone have a preference on what brand of manifold pressure gauge to use? Bob Green Bob G/Gang: I never was a fan of fabric sling seats, although I flew with them a lot in factory aircraft. They are comfortable and simplify construction. I knew I wanted something a little more substantial if I crashed. While building my mkIII in 1991 at the factory, I found two Ultrastar seats in the attic of Homer's barn. Brother Jim welded up the seat frames and I reinforced the plastic US seat backs with sheet metal. I also took some advice from the JAARS pilots and riveted a sheet metal pan under my plastic seat to prevent me being rammed through the 4130 seat frames should I have a really hard landing. I also use a piece of firm (green) Thermofoam in the seat to extend flight legs from 30 minutes to several hours without getting butt cramps. john h mkIII

    Subject: 912 Ignition Question
From: "Kirby, Dennis Civ USAF AFMC AFNWC/EN" <Dennis.Kirby@kirtland.af.mil>
I have question for all you 912 Guys and Gals, regarding a problem I had this past weekend. After a seemingly normal flight, I was on the ground and stopped, and went to shut down my engine. I flipped both ignition switches to "off," but nothing happened - the engine continued to idle. Had to close off the fuel valve to stop the engine. I checked the wire connections on each of the kill switches (2) and on each of the ignition modules (2), and they all are secure. Any suggestions on what else to look at or troubleshoot? Many thanks - Dennis Kirby Mark-3, 912ul Sandia Park, NM

Either your "ground" is missing to the key switch or the switch itself is bad. In a message dated 8/30/2010 11:02:08 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, Dennis.Kirby@kirtland.af.mil writes: Any suggestions on what else to look at or troubleshoot?

Dennis, I had the same problem on the Kolbra only with one mag staying hot. It continued to run after I switched it off. I have a rotary ignition switch instead of toggles. I found one of the switch wipers wasn't making good enough contact inside, so I took the switch apart and extended the springs. It solved the problem for a year. The last few weeks, I noticed the problem returned. I took my trusty ohmmeter and saw that both mags were being grounded like they are supposed to on the airframe side of the engine connector. I reseated the connector several times, and that did the trick. It may have been the original problem in the first place. When the connector was jostled around, it made contact making me think it was the ignition switch problem. So, the bottom line is to check the connector between the engine and airframe to make sure it isn't corroded and all connections are good. I hope this solves your problem. I should have read your post better, but still- the ground to the switches is missing. It is possible that one of the switches is "open", but if that were the case you should notice a slight decrease in your idle speed . In a message dated 8/30/2010 11:02:08 A.M. Ralph/All Please don't respond to Mike. Hopefully Matt will do something soon. In the mean time just ignore him. These people get their jollies when someone else stoops to his level. I had hoped he had gone for good when he tried to start up his own list a while back. I sure wish he would stay on his medication but....... Kolbers, There is nothing wrong with getting a little off subject, but what has been going on lately is bordering on the ridiculous. In the future, when someone reviews the archives on "Forest Lake fly-in last Saturday" they are going to be disappointed, because they will find little on the subject. Instead they are going to find a lot of spleen letting, and some friendly and vicious jabbing and biting. If you have to get off subject and still want the whole list see how you feel about non Kolb material, please use "do not archive". And you may want to review the guidelines you agreed to when you joined the Kolb List. For what it is/was worth! Jack B.
