I would think the corvair is too heavy. The primary problem would be that no
one makes a redrive for the corvair.

Gary=2C
Although someone may have thought about it=2C I doubt it is a good idea f
or several
reasons.
First of all=2C the Corvair engine is a 6 cylinder=2C which means it's fa
irly big and heavy.
Second=2C it would have to be a direct drive to spin the prop=2C otherwis
e it would be
incredibly way too heavyby the addition of a redrive system!! A direct dri
ve prop would
need to spin at least 3000 rpm=2Cto allow the engine to come remotely close
to it's torque curve=2C
and that makes for an VERY loud and annoying prop.
Third=2C the fuel burn for a Corvair would likely be in the 4-5 gph range
(at least) @3K rpm.
This would mean you'd have to install a custom made tank that would best be
able to carry
15-18 gallons of fuel. Now=2C installing the larger fuel tank isn't the pr
oblem! It's the fact
that you have already exceeded your useful load with a "too big" of an engi
ne=2C couple that
with the need to carry 100-125 lbs of fuel=2C and you've got a dog on your
hands.
IMO=2C a guy could go on and on about why a Corvair engine on a MkIII is
a bad idea=2C but
I think it pushes the envelope in being very practical. My opinion!! Othe
r's may have a different
opinion=2C that ok with me.
IF a guy were inclined to go with an alternative engine (a non-Rotax OEM
engine)=2C you would
be MUCH better off with either a VW based engine (w/a redrive)=2C or a Lyco
ming O-200.
Both of these engines push the maximum weight allowance=2C but again=2C IMO
=2C would be better
than the Corvair.
BTW=2C I don't have anything against the Corvair engine for an Experiment
al Aircraft=2C I just think
the MkIII is not the appropriate airframe choice.
Personally=2C my recommendation would be the VW based engine with a redri
ve.
a)Reasonably priced ($6000-$8000)
b) Kolb factory talking about making it an acceptable option
c) cheap to maintain=2C ok on gas consumption
d) part availability by the millions (especailly from the HiPo dune buggy c
rowd).
Even if I had a Corvair engine lying around my shop=2C I can't imagine se
riously considering
installing it on a Kolb MkIII.

Gary=2C
Much better choice.
Don't confuse facts about the Harley engine=2C tho. Facts like @ what rp
m does it get that
100 HP? If it gets it at 5000+ rpm=2C then you have to install a redrive
=2C and it's no longer a
155 lb motor!! What is the fuel burn? Can you adapt a redrive to it=2C and
if you can=2C THEN how
much would it weigh?
IMO=2C the Harley may be a reasonable idea. Just make sure you are reali
stic when you make an
apples and apples comparison to a different engine.
Another thing to remember about the Harley engine is the radial design.
Weight and balance would
need to be taken into account=2C since more of the Harley engine would be "
rearward". This may
not be a problem=2C just to something to think about.
I thought there was a problem with the Harley due to excess vibration. C
heck out Hogair's information.
Headed out to my shop=2C gotta finsh that instrument panel.

BFI is a license that was associated with one of the national ultralight
organizations. Since the adoption of the Light Sport pilot license they can
do nothing for you in getting a ticket. You need to find a CFI (certified
flight instructor).
Depending upon your ambitions, you need to decide whether to use a Sport
Pilot CFI or a PPL (private pilot license) CFI. The difference being that
dual instruction from a SP CFI will not count for more advanced ratings
(your solo time will) while a PPL CFI's dual instruction will.

Yes the Harley engine weighs less and has the power but at what RPM? You
need a prop RPM around 2000RPMs to swing a big enough prop to get the thrust
needed for a Kolb MKIII. Yes you could swing a 58" prop up to 3000RPMs but
you would need more than 100HP to get the same thrust.
Also a V twin has a nasty harmonics issue that is tough to deal with on a
direct drive engine and much more difficult to deal with on a redrive.
Valley Engineering had to get very creative to even make their Genrac V
twin work at all.

As one who has owned, built, and raced a number of Corvair's over the years, I
thought about it a lot. The weight is just too much: 225 pounds minimum. But in
all other respects it would not be a bad choice at all, just too heavy.

This winter? You mean THIS winter??!! You're going to build a MkIII in
one
winter?!!
Damn=2C I wish I knew that was all it took.
BTW=2C you say MkIII. Do you mean Xtra or Classic? Just curious.
I've spent A LOT more time building my MkIII than just about anybody (exc
ept for
Mike S.=2C hehe). I've changed a lot of things. Modified a lot of things.
Done a few
things twice=2C because I didn't like the first version.
I've spent more than "a few" winters building it. More than a few summer
s=2C too.
Time to wrap it up!! Looking to finish it in a few short months. We'll
see.
