It is a real shame that John had a problem with the V plug. I used them for
years and got over a hundred hours on them before I changed them just for
the hell of it. I also used the platnum and paladiums which were really,
really expensive. The old 447 and then the 582 I used them on started
easier and ran smoother than the crappy standard big electrode plugs that
they say have to be changed every 25 hours. I put a whole set of 8 plugs in
my car engine one time and 7 (seven) of the plugs were bad. Dont use that
brand again but never heard of anyone else having the trouble. Cant fault a
whole lot for one plug although if I would have had the failure, I probably
would not use them again but that dont mean much. I learned a long time ago
"just because something is new, dont mean it is any good'. Ted Cowan,

Yes ! I did, but it's not an unusual occurrence with my set-up (Hotmail on Laptop
running Win. Vista etc). Some get through, others don't. The ones that don't
look like a series of Letters and numbers like this;
gAABBRi1DICAAAFJFRC1FWUUAgCIAAOgDAABBVVRPICAAAEFVVE8gICAgICAgICAAT0ZGICAgICAgICAg
But it takes up a huge amount of space on the e-mail (hundreds of lines), reducing
the vertical slider to about 1/8th inch thick on a 15 inch screen. When it
happens, I just go to the matronics site to look at the photos. There's probably
some way of correcting it, but I haven't got around to researching it.
David.

15 years after last flying my T-Craft (~600 hours in it), I flew a
Quicksilver for maybe 10 hours, then had no trouble flying my UltraStar for
the first time 6 months later.
An hour or two in a Cub or such, combined with remembering how you had to
dive at the runway in the Quick, and you should be fine.

I have had a FS2 and now fly a MK-3.Dual time in the Mark won't help you,t
he difference 1 up and 2up is night and day.Get a little taxi time to get
used to the tail wheel, take it up for an hour and feel out the slow speed
handling in particular, and when you're ready to land, fly it in with som
e power on,and wheel land it.Your slow speed work will give you some idea
of speeds to hold on approach. You will need some room at first, sod if you
can get it,a couple thousand feet with good approaches.Kolbs ground handl
e pretty well, fairly long moment from mains to tail wheel.Be careful when
doing tail up fast taxi,if it lifts off you better throttle up and climb
out rather than trying to set it up for landing that quickly.Nice long ap
proaches really help get the feel you will need for that. You're gonna like
that airplane

These are all good comments. I have never flown a firefly so I can only
comment between my MKIIIC and GA airplanes like (C150, C172, Piper Archer
and Saritoga). Kolb airplane loose air speed extremely quick when flaring
for landing. All you GA training will work against you. Gary's comment about
caring some power is very important. Power makes a very light Kolb slow down
less quickly. So just reduce power just enough to get it to land. Make it
fly like a C172 by using power on approach and cut power after touch down.
Do this many times then start reducing power gradually. I have a set of bent
landing gear that reminds me of my mistake of going from powered approach to
no power full flaps way too quickly.
Also use a grass strip. The tail wheel part of Kolb operation is a non issue
on grass but can become more of a hand full for new fliers on pavement.
Also another good point about power changes on or near the ground are a big
problem. Taxi up to flying speed and chop power will cause the plane to
pitch up and likely take off without flying speed. If you then slam in full
power the plane will pitch down very quickly (not good when you are near the
ground). Adjust power very gently near the ground and be repaired for the
pitch trim change when you do.

Ted C/Gang:
Yep, I agree with you. It was a shame.
I paid big dollars for the BR8EV's, trying to make the FS and 447 as bullet
proof as possible. Back then, dollars were scarce as hen's teeth. Figured
I had a lot better chance of not fouling a plug with the BR8EV's than the
BR8E's.
What I did not realize was the tip of the electrode was fused on. I got a
bad one that separated and grounded that plug when it lodged between the
ground strap and the electrode. When you lose a cylinder on a 447 you are
only going one way, down.
I spent 4 or 5 days in Niagara Falls working on the FS to get it flyable
enough to make it back to Alabama. It wasn't pretty when we finished, but
it was flyable. I was really happy to take off from Niagara International
and head south.
A young man by the name of Mike Fehlin befriended me the day I tore up my
airplane. Mike heard a radio interview with me telling how I had crashed on
Grand Island and torn up my airplane. That I needed help to get it repaired
enough to get back to Alabama. Five minutes later he introduced himself to
me in that weed field on Grand Island. He went into Niagara and got a large
U-Haul truck, helped me take the wings off the FS and load the aircraft. He
knew this man at the airport that built experimental aircraft, contacted
him, and we took the FS to his hanger to repair. I would have been in
serious trouble without these two fine gentlemen. Mike was also responsible
for getting me a room in a local truck stop that did not cost an arm and a
leg. He also picked me up every morning, took me to the airport, and then
returned me to the truck stop each night. I could never repay him for all
he did.
BTW: It was 37F this morning at the Rock House. It will be in the mid-60's
soon. Beautiful weather and good friends are hard to beat.

Thanks guys.. This is all very good advice.. I experienced a lot of these years
ago when I came out of a 172 and jumped into the quicksilver.. After 1.5 hrs
I soloed that quick. But I had a ride with somone who let me fly in a quick before
that and it gave me a hard way to go when I finnally realized These planes
are low inertia hi drag and after I became accustomed to it I liked it even
better.. just havent flown in a while and there is no two seat anything like an
ultralight around here so I am just a bit nervous about a new type plane with
a tailwheel and a lapse in years from flying those types..

Subject: | Camra phone video |
Greetings,
Seeing Thom's i-phone video inspired me to try my Motorola camera phone to
take a short video last Sunday. It was not a very good video but to my
surprised the video phone did not record the engine noise. I had the pho
ne plugged to my headset so I'm thinking it will record my radio transmiss
ions. I will have to try this out the next time I go flying.
While I was busy playing with the camera phone I let FireStar's nose drop
so the RPMs started to go up. While I wasn't paying attention to my engi
ne instruments the EIS was. That big red light got my attention when the
RPMs went over the limit. I didn't panic when the red light turned on bec
ause I heard the RPM go up, I knew right away what it was and pulled the
nose back up.

Thanx for your input about plugs. Were the 7 bad ones massive-
electrode types?
