dont recall what type of plugs they were now. I usually buy AC now. I just
rebuilt a 440 and went to start it up and I guess I gas fowled them and they
never dried up. Bad when you are starting a new built engine of any type.
You dont know for sure what is wrong and dont suspect ALL the plugs went
bad. I have had a bunch of the big electrodies go bad on me until I changed
to V types, etc. I have had three bad plugs on my 912 so far in two
changes. That hurts at the price and you cant send them back. Got over
three hundred hours on the 912 and still purrs. Just still has that damned
rum rum. Hope to be at Evergreen this weekend. Just got back from Bimini
diving, been home for a week and ready to get away again -- this time by
air. Ted Cowan, Slingshot, 912ul, zoom, zoom.

If the Kolb you are going to learn to fly in, has the standard low-stance landing
gear, you will find it to be just about the easiest tail-dragger around in
terms of handling during take-off and landing. If it has longer/taller gear legs,
then its behavior tends to be more like other tail-draggers, but still not
difficult if you are careful and the toe-in is set correctly. I've owned two
early Firestars, one with standard gear legs and one with long legs. Big difference
in high speed ground handling encountered during take-off and landings.
Once slowed down to taxi speed, no difference between the two and easy in light
wind conditions. If it is windy, just follow the tail-dragger taxi rules until
it is parked and secured.
As BB noted, grass is much easier. If you learn on grass, when you go to pavement
expect a little more twitchy behavior, but still not difficult.

gotime242,
If you are willing to pay the going rate, an A&P would be more inclined to make
the time. We charge $400 for a condition inspection on simple experimental aircraft
and it generally takes a full day to complete. Most A&Ps in our area won't
touch an experimental at any price.
BB is an exception to the rule, but he really likes his beer, so that probably
explains it. Actually, BB is an exception to most rules :-). I mean that as a
compliment, Bob.

Gary,
You didn't ask me, but I figured you might want to hear from other Jab owners too.
My Jab stays pretty much under 1200F EGT most of the time in cruise. I do
not have the economy tuning kit installed so under full power the EGTs regularly
go above 1200F and sometimes as high as 1300F. I have a second Bing 94 carb
with the economy tuning kit installed (newer carb) but have not bothered to try
it out yet.
If it ain't broke don't break it.

Chris,
You must have solved the noise problem pretty well, the only draw back of
the Jabiru in pusher mode. The inquiry about the temps was because of the
low indications in the video.Mine run 1400-1425 with the factory install
economy jetting. But my C model is slower by 10-15 mph than yours as well.
At 2750 it burns less than 3 gph but only gives me about 70-75mph.Nice vid

Tom,
Don't think I noticed the egt's on any of your pictures, but can't mistake
the sound of the Jabiru.Have flown over the Niagara Falls area frequently
heading up to Rice lake. It's been a few years so really enjoyed the Video
s you posted. The noise level isn't bad in the videos. The aerodynamics of
that airframe must be a lot cleaner than the Mk-3.

Gary,
At 2700 rpm, the noise is not bad but starts getting a lot worse above 2800 rpm.
The 64" diameter prop is a lot noiser than the shorter props at the same rpm.
If I remember correctly, you and Chris both run 58" props on your Jabirus. I'm
looking forward to flying a friend's Jab 2200 powered Sonex soon which has
a 54" diameter prop. I expect that to be a lot quieter.

Tractors are always much quieter than pushers.
The tractor configured Kolb Flyer with Warp Drive taper tips was almost
stealth mode. Same engine/prop on a MKIII would blow you away.

Hey guys.. I am seriously looking at a firefly ( A famous one I might ad)
and have some questions.. I want to go about this the right way.. Here is
my experience.. 10 logged hrs. solo at 7.5 hrs in a c172.. And 30-40 hrs in
quicksilver sport 1 and sport 2..Recently put 1 hour in a citabria.
Hi Chad,
we have a MK lll here in michigan, I would be glad to give you a demo
ride....before it gets winter...but sounds like we are quite a distance
from you.....I also fly a firestar, have never flown a Firefly but can tell
you how the Mk lll and firestar fly.....The Firefly should make a good
airplane for you, would suggest following lst time flight suggestions for
expermentals. Would be nice if you could use a long grass strip, check static
RPM prior to flying to make sure prop pitch set correctly, once i got into
the air I would go up to safe altitude and do power off and partial power
stall to find indicated stall speed, i would then do slow flight about 5 to
10 miles per hour above indicated stall speed.....maintain altitude with
correct power setting and maintain speed at 5 to 10 over stall speed....also
maintain the same speed and slowly practice descents and climbs by increase
or decrease of power.....use no less that 10 mph above stall speed on
approach and use power to increase or decrease descent, when just above the
ground use some power to stop descent then slowly reduce power and let the
plane descend to the runway, as soon as you touch the ground you can get off
the power ....and as the plane slows downs you can then come back on the
stick.....I get much better landings using this method. try and pick a time
when the wind is very light and right down the runway.....just remember
always fly the airplane and never let it get below stall speed. spending time
taxing and just setting in the airplane getting used to the instruments and
controls is also very helpful...good luck & fly safe....feel free to call
me if you wish.....Jim Swan

Chad,
I had several hours in various ga and glider aircraft, but never finished a
ticket. I test flew my FireFly. You might like to read "flying techniques"
found at/on:
http://jackbhart.com/firefly/firefly.html
I have always flown from a hard surface runway. My experience with the
FireFly and grass have shown me to be very conservative with throttle on
take off to prevent blowing the FireFly over on it's nose as rolling
resistance is much greater on grass.
