Dear Listers,
Some have asked, "What's my Contribution used for?" and that's a good question.
Here are just a few examples of what your direct List support enables. It provides
for the very expensive, commercial-grade T1 Internet connection used on
the List insuring maximum performance and minimal contention when accessing List
services. It pays for the regular system hardware and software upgrades enabling
the highest performance possible for services such as the Archive Search
Engine, List Browser, and Forums. It pays for narly 20 years (yeah, I really
said *20* years) worth of online archive data available for instant random search
and access. And, it offsets the many hours spent writing, developing, and
maintaining the custom applications that power this List Service such as the List
Browse, Search Engine, Forums, and Wiki.
But most importantly, your List Contribution enables a forum where you and your
peers can communicate freely in an environment that is free from moderation,
censorship, advertising, commercialism, SPAM, and computer viruses. How many places
on the Internet can you make all those statements these days? It is YOUR
CONTRIBUTION that directly enables these many aspects of these valuable List
services. Please support it today with your List Contribution. Its one of the
best investments you can make in your Sport...

215 pounds!!! And what do you weigh?
>
Bill,
Currently I weigh about 186 pounds with flying gear on.
After returning home, I went over to the airport to try out the latest cut
on the propeller. Even though the battery had been on the trickle charger,
the battery was too low to start the engine. Since I am trying to save
weight, I have removed the hand pull starter. Looking for another battery.
May have to learn how to hand prop it.
The propeller matching to engine has been interesting, and expensive. The
ultra light IVO does not seem to be nearly as efficient as the medium pitch
IVO.

Frank,
Thank you for your photos. I just came back from checking the FireFly. My
braces weld to the corner of the square tube. I did not find any cracks,
but due to using powder coat, they would have to be quite large to see them.
I flew the FireFly with the Victor 1+, a 313cc one cylinder engine, for 188
hours. One of the advantages of replacing it with the MZ34 was to reduce
displacement and firing impulse vibration. This has been proven out in that
the FireFly is much smoother and quieter in flight. If you are using a
heavy, high inertia propeller, you may want to consider changing to a
smaller, lighter, low inertia propeller. This will allow more firing
impulse energy to be dissipated into the propeller than being transferred to
the mounts and on to the cage.

Was the Firestar airframe designed to have an HKS bolted on to it? Did the
Kolb Company ever support/recommend an HKS installation on the Firestar
airframe? If the answer to both of those questions is "no", I vote =93no
=94 for
suggesting we sound the AD alarm and create a significant burden for a
company we all would like to see prosper. I vote "yes", however, for
builders/experimenters discussing in this forum their challenges and
proposed solutions when choosing to install and operate alternative engines
(with different weight and vibration characteristics) on their experimental
aircraft.

Mark, Since there is no such thing as an airworthiness directive (AD) for a
n
experimental aircraft and the braces for the motor mount on Frank's airfram
e
are apparently not standard Firestar, either, not to worry. All TNK can do
is issue a heads up and it will be up to owners and maintenance people to
try and nip this one in the bud.

I just ran across this. Bid is only $1000 right now. No power section but
looks good if you're willing to put in the time to finish.

Subject: | Re: cracked rear spar tube firestar |
I agree that the factory wil probably come up with the best solution for the HKS
installation. When we put the 582 on the FSII, the factory felt that it was
too much torque for the FSII upper fuselage structure, so we added some external
reinforcements to take the torque loads.
This is probably overkill, but on the other hand, this was one of the few portions
of the fuselage structure that did not get distorted in the crash...

There are 2 issues:=0A=C2-=0ARoughly speaking, an HKS has approximately t
wice the power impulse than a =0Atwo-stoke because it has only half of the
power pulses.=0A(A 2-stroke piston fires every time in goes down, but only
every other time on a =0A4-stroke.)=C2- So the HKS will place a higher st
ress on the structure than a =0A2-stroke of comparable power.=0A=C2-=0ASo
mewhere along the way, the brace gusset from the motor mount got moved to t
he =0Acenter of the square tube.=C2- Formerly it was welded to the leadin
g edge of the =0Asquare tube.=0AOn your frame the power pulses are transmit
ted to the center of the thin wall of =0Athe square tube =93 this wil
l result in a certain amount of flexing which could =0Apossible lead to the
cracking you have.=0A=C2-=0AA possible fix would be the addition of a gu
sset to get the forces directly to =0Athe corner of the square tube.=0A=C2
-=0AIf someone is going to sound an alarm about the cracking, I think a d
istinction =0Acould be made between the frames that have the center orienta
