Does anyone here see a downside to this technique ? Dennis T/Folks: I used similar method to haul my US and FS from home to my airstrip, 3 miles. Major difference was a positive mechanical connection, rather than a tailwheel sitting in a cup. At least that is how the photo looks to me. I removed the tailwheel, used the tailwheel strut end fitting to attach to a home made draw bar on my tractor. A 1/4 aircraft bolt and nut, used as a pin, secured it to the draw bar. Never had a problem. I now have a 28' deckover goose neck I haul the mkIII with. Bought the goose neck to haul antique tractors, but it does a good job hauling the little mkIII. Please note. I did not haul the US and FS with the wings attached, fuselage only. I used a padded utility trailer to haul the wings, one at a time. john h mkIII Titus, Alabama ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 04:31:51 PM PST US Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Kolb Firefly/ Firestar tug From: Ellery Batchelder Jr I use to haul my Firestar about 6 miles 45/50 MPH all the time behind my pickup on its main gear I just secured the tail wheel so it couldnt get out of the mount I fabricated Ellery Batchelder Jr. -----Original Message----- From: Dennis Thate Sent: Wed, Dec 15, 2010 6:33 pm Subject: Kolb-List: Kolb Firefly/ Firestar tug I'm looking into different ways of towing my Firestar a short distance to my ocal airport, about 6 miles, for its first test flight. Remember humps will cause bumps in those wing leading edges. The firefly and firestar don't have too much weight to contend with. For security I stuck a trailer hitch on a steel rod to tow my MkIII by tractor. (wings off) That is a harbor freight tow dolly for pulling it into the basement. Never try to tow a MkIII with the wings folded. Good for pushing into and out of a hangar only. For one you will be permanently crippled after you try to lift it. Secondly, the weight will bend the stock aluminum tail rod after some jouncing.
