Cristal, I'm not sure how you could do this if your throttle and choke
cables have terminations on both ends. The splitter has threaded plugs on
both ends so the cables would get all twisted up as the threads are both
right hand. It might work for cables that clamped by a set screw but if the
cable slips up inside the housing, and the ends are frayed or splayed they
get caught if the end cover.
When you disassemble from the carb and starting carb ends you get the
advantage of being able to inspect the the cable termination, the condition
of the cable, the o-ring on top of the needle clip, the condition of the
needle grooves and how the clip fits. For the starting carb you also get to
inspect the rubber face of the plug to make sure it is sealing correctly.

Let me update you a little.
There is no "The New Kolb Aircraft Company".
Not sure of their official name but I believe it is "Kolb Company". Brian
wanted his company to look, taste, and smell, like Homer Kolb's aircraft
company. He named it "Kolb Company, Inc." I may not be exact on the
company name, but Travis Brown can correct me if I am wrong.
Brian wants to build and kit airplanes that Homer designed, not fast, slick,
pretty LSA's that fly 120 kts and cost 120,000.00 dollars.

Subject: | 912 Tach Malfunction |
Fellow 912 Kolbers -
Today, when I went flying, I noticed a problem with the tachometer on my
Mark-III. Am hoping the collective wisdom of our 912 folks can help me
pinpoint the problem.
The tach needle was jumping around erratically. It was mostly pointing
to the correct RPM, but would often jump up to around 6000, then
eventually settle back down to the actual RPM. This of course happening
while the engine speed stays constant. Was doing it continuously
throughout the flight.
The Rotax tachometer is electronic. I suspect a bad ground somewhere in
the tachometer circuit, which will be easy to troubleshoot next time I'm
at the airplane. Anybody else agree?
Many thanks -

Kolb Company is located in Brian Millburn's shop on the south side of what
used to be the airstrip.
Chesnut Knolls Air Foundation is now a hay field. There is no official
airstrip any more, although a narrow lane is cut down what was the old
airstrip to do test flights.

I suspect a bad connection _somewhere_, not necessarily a ground. The tach
measures frequency, and an interruption anywhere could overlay another
frequency onto the tach signal.

Dennis, The UMA tach I use with my 582 sometimes does this when it's too

Dennis=2C
First thing you want to do is verify all the wire connections are taken a
part and retightened.
(the hot lead=2C the ground=2C and the signal lead) If that doesn't solve
the problem=2C then here's
my thoughts...
Your tach is a simple frequency counter. Since yours is electronic=2C 99
.9% of its innards are
unadjustable (capacitors=2C resistors=2C transistors=2C a couple of integra
ted circuits=2C and a few diodes).
Either they work or they don't!! Except for one thing=3B the potentiometer
=2C which that COULD
create such a symptom is if the internal potentiometer is a little corroded
=2C it would interpret a
really bad frequency=2C thereby making the needle swing wildly.
If you take your tachometer apart=2C there should be at least one potenti
ometer (known
as a 'pot'). I'd bet if you could spray it with electronics parts cleaner
=2C it would help. You
ought make sure you don't screw up it's calibration=2C though. That potent
iometer is what the
tach uses for calibration. I think it is the only thing inside that's adju
stable=2C and possibly
corrodible.
If you plan on trying to fix it yourself=2C maybe you could try this=3B
Start the engine=2C let it warm
up. See what rpms the tach says. Then remove the tach=2C take off the hou
sing=2C look for the
pot. Once you find the pot=2C note where it is presently set at!! Spray a
little parts cleaner on
the pot. With your tiny screwdriver=2C twist a little left and right a few
times. Spray it again=2C
then reset it close to where it started at. Now hook it back up temporaril
y to your engine with
the housing still off.
Start your engine=2C and turn the pot until the tach says the exact same
rpm it said before you took
it apart. Once you're happy that you have reset it correctly=2C put it bac
k together=2C and re-install it.
This is just a guess....

Subject: | to Kolb/Jabiru guys... |
I the past week I was able to get some glider and emergency forced land practice
in with my Mark 3 Xtra ! The first time I landed on a fairway at the golf course
south of our field and the second was yesterday, but was able to make the
airport...both times were non-events do to the fact I had the skis on.After the
first time we thought it it may have had a frozen fuel line...checked ,cleaned
,refiltered and ran it up on the ground and she ran fine...then took her in
the air and again,no problem...yesterday,I took off and everything was great
for about 7 minute when it started running rough and quit. After landing,I got
it running again, but this time I could see gas pouring out the front of the carb.Ends
up the float needle had a ridge around it and in certian spots it would
let fuel pass by the seat and flood the engine out.Anyway,I have a new needle
coming ( the black tip one with the stronger internal spring ) which Jabiru
says will take care of the problem.
Just a heads up the you Jabby Guys !

Chris, were these forced landings due to the cold? This sounds a little scary to
me. It was lucky you had skis on as it gave you more options for picking an
emergency landing spot. There's nothing worse than have the engine quit. The 912
has been very reliable so far. I'm hoping it stays that way.

Ralph,
The cold ended up having nothing to do with it...it was the float needle causing
the problem...the first time even after I got it running at the hangar it would
idle fine and no trace of fuel coming out the front...It sounds like there
has been a problem with certain engines in the past.It has run perfectly up the
is point and I am certain this will take care of it...I will be staying around
the lake though for awhile ..lol

Actually,I think you 912 guys are running the carb/needle /seat combo...there are
3 different ones...silver/black and pink tip needles...My Jab has a 40 mm ,64
carb....the 64 and 94 are basically the same as I understand..
