Web sites don't always get updated in a timely manner, and some get archived when
they shouldn't. After N582EF got wadded up, I put up a web page advertising
to part it out. When we decided to rebuild it, I promptly took that page down,
but somebody (or sombodies) has archived it, and 18 months later, I still get
phone calls asking if the parts are still available.

Chris,
Thanks for the heads up. Did you change the standard Jabiru issue Bing 94 for a
64? Or was this a typo?
They are both CV carbs and function similarly and probably have some parts in common
but not all of them by a long shot.

Subject: | FSII parts to get rid of |
Now that N582EF is all back together, we have one wall of the hangar littered with
left over FSII parts that need to go away. A left wing and aileron that needs
the front part of the root rib repaired and a new wing tip, both horizontal
stabs and elevators already covered and hinged, 4 wheels and brakes, tires,
and several boxes of small parts, seat fabric, a rear enclosure in pretty good
shape, a couple of gas tanks, etc. The right wing has a good spar, not much else.
If you don't see it listed: ask, I might have it.
Email me off-list for details or pictures, no reasonable offer refused for the
wing and tailfeathers, but you have to arrange to get them. The rest of it will
be dirt cheap, with a small charge to make it worth my while to box it and ship
it.

Thom, The difference between a Bing 64 and a 94 is the size (probably not a
surprise there). The throttle valve of a 64 is 36 mm (1.417"), the 94 can b
e
42 or 44 mm (1.654 - 1.732").

Hi Chris,
good to hear that your OK. Nice job in getting down safely not once, but TWICE!!
I'm impressed with your dedication to train for emergencies.
Is there a way to test for this issue? Can the needle be inspected for this groove?
I tried to start my 2200 for the first time on Tuesday but the starter solenode
was faulty, brand new. Aircraft Spruce is replacing it.
It would be nice to use your experience to fix an issue before I had to deal with
it. Thanks for the heads-up. This is exactly how this site helps everyone.

Hi Frank,
I had some starting problems to begin with.Upgraded the battery and put a
cheap solar panel charger on the hangar roof which I plug in whenever the
plane is in the hangar. Cost about 13 I think. No mains elec. as it is in a
field..Good investment when you cant fly as often as you would like.
Has bags of power and no probs since, even through the winter.
good luck

Frankd,
To answer your question to Chris, yes you can inspect the float needle for wear.
If you are concerned about this particular issue, drop the bowl of the Bing carb
and inspect the float needle. Depending upon how easy it is, or is not, to get
your eyeballs on it, you may have to dismount the carb to see it well. If you
are not familiar with the Bing CV (64 & 94) carbs, go to
http://www.bingcarburetor.com/manual.html
and purchase their manual for $11 including shipping in the USA. Once you have
this in hand, most mechanically inclined pilots can take the carb apart and clean
and inspect everything for wear and condition.

Rick,
There is more difference than just the throat size between the 64 and 94 carbs.
I've done complete disassembly, cleaning and inspection of both types and their
operating principles are the same but not all seemingly identical parts are
the same; some are and some are not.
Jabiru's earliest 2200 engines came with a Bing 94 with 32mm throat but they switched
to 40mm Bing 94 beginning with S/N 699 (which is what they all have now,
including the 3300, but with different jets and needles).

Frankd,
After thinking about it for a moment I realized that you can't get deep enough
into the Bing 94 carb to inspect the float needle valve tip with removing the
carb and removing the float support mechanism which requires removal of the float
hinge pin which is item 14 in the attached image. I hope this helps.

The tach needle was jumping around erratically. It was mostly pointing
to the correct RPM, but would often jump up to around 6000, then
eventually settle back down to the actual RPM. This of course happening
while the engine speed stays constant. Was doing it continuously
throughout the flight.

Subject: | US Sport Aviation Expo 2011 |
Hi Folks:
Tossing around the idea of flying down to the US Sport Aviation Expo at
Sebring, Florida, 20-23 Jan 2011. That is Thu, Fri, Sat, and Sun, for the
show. If I do fly down, don't know if I will stay that long or not. All
depends on whether I can stayed entertained and not get bored.
Major factor for making a decision to go will be the weather. If it doesn't
look good, I am not hankering to camp out under the wing, or hang out at
Sebring Airport.
Secondly, I must wash Miss P'fer prior to departure. She hasn't been washed
since just prior to Sun and Fun 2010, so she is kinda funky.
Who all has thought about or decided to visit Sebring for the show? Let me
see a show of hands.
I do not know if Kolb Aircraft is planning to attend or not, but will let
you all know if I find out any info.
Still very much winter here in central Alabama, with snow being forecast for
Christmas.

Well...thank you, Dennis.
Actually, I will be flying my MKIII, if I fly to Sebring. It is 460 sm from
my airstrip, Gantt International Airport, to Sebring Airport. I'll plan for
75 mph ground speed and shoot for about 6 hours flight time and 30 gal of
gas. Probably land at Perry, Florida, to take on fuel and get something to
eat.
There are many on the Kolb List that have flown far greater flights in
Firestars, Ultrastars, and MKIII's. It is my preferred method of cross
country flight, low and slow, with an indicated cruise of 85 mph, give or
take a few mph. It is amazing how far and where you can fly in a Kolb.
November 1987, I flew my original Firestar from Gantt International to
Miami, Florida, and back. At that time it was my longest cross country in a
Kolb, about 1,200 sm round trip. I spent the night with my Brother, Jim
Hauck, in Woodville, Florida. We had a cow pasture near Natural Bridge, FL,
to land and tie down in, about 5 miles from Jim's house. Next few nights I
camped out with the Florida Flying Gators UL Club at their airstrip down
near the Citrus Tower. Can not remember the name of the town. Had an
engine out and landed my Firestar on the Sebring High School foot ball field
next to the school house during school hours. The field was clear and I had
not other choice. At that time I also was not equipped with brakes. I was
probably a much better pilot back then than I am now. Those were the good
old days, barn storming my Kolbs. BTW: Never heard of a GPS back then and
was being pushed by a 447 Rotax with dual point ignition. Cross country
flying back then was usually a challenge in more than one way.
Glad I got to do all that fun stuff when I was a young pup of 48. ;-)

20.0 hours General Aviation time in a C-152. ;-)

Yes ...Mine is the Bing 94....I dropped the carb bowl...took the rod that holds
the floats in out ( there is a knurled end on the left end as you are looking
forward on the Kolb and goes in and comes out that side) then the float and
needle will drop down.... careful of the tiny Jesus clip holding it on ! if you
look real close you can see if it has the ridges...magnifying glass is great...
also,I did not say before ,but mine had the pink tip one...
