Sorry list, I'm starting to understand aging more better.
This is an APB for Beaux in Louisiana (Clinton?). Travis had given you my name
as a local Kolb contact. Sorry, but I misplaced your phone number. Flew Mark
IIIC yesterday. Call me to arrange a time to meet at Nauga Field.

Ralph,
Very nice videos. I was particularly impressed with the audio quality. You gotta
tell us how your intercom/radio system is set up to get that quality with very
little background (engine/prop) noise. All my in-flight videos have continuous
engine/prop noise in the audio.

There was no Warp Drive Prop Blade failure on Ellery Batchelder's MKIII.
Ellery was told his prop was a WD when he bought it from a gentleman in
Florida. The after accident photos indicate the prop blade that failed was
built up from some type honeycomb material.
Talked with Daryl at WD a few minutes ago. WD has always built solid carbon
fiber blades. They have never manufactured a honeycomb blade.
I will continue to fly with confidence, my Warp Drive Prop, as I have for
many years and many hours.
The NTSB has been in contact with Travis at Kolb Aircraft and Daryl at WD.

Thom/gang,
I needed a patch cord that would take the audio from my headset and patch it into
my Canon Rebel T2i camera with an external audio input jack. I found one here:
http://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/1978
The once I got the cord, I noticed the plug didn't fit into my camera well, so
I cut it off and spliced in another one that fit better. The audio works well
and cuts most of the engine noise out. I think that I can improve on it by putting
in a fresh set of batteries in my wife's Lightspeed ANR that the cord was
plugged into as the batteries were dead. When uploading the videos, I noticed
a feature to even the audio level but I didn't use that and maybe it would improve
it more. I'm still experimenting, but this is a step in the right direction.

Thanks, Ralph.
My Lightspeed headset has a plug-in jack for cellphone connection and a patch cord
for that purpose. I wonder if that would work since I now take most all of
my in-flight videos with my iPhone. When I get airborne again, I'll give that
a try. If that does not eliminate the background noise then I'll see about the
adapter you posted a link to. Thanks for that; I didn't know that sort of thing
existed.
I don't carry passengers in my Slingshot so I don't even have an intercom. I plug
my headset directly into my iCom A-6 transceiver. My goal is to record audio
commentary on the videos without all the loud background noise.

Thom, you can hear audio with the patch cord that was included with your Lightspeed
headset. I did this before I bought the one below. It will patch audio into
any recording device with an audio input jack. You will hear all radio transmissions
coming through your headset. I didn't try it when I spoke on the radio,
but I think it will record that too. The only thing it didn't do was record
my passenger conversation over the intercom. This is what the patch cord in
the link below did.

I hate to be the contrarian here - sorry Daryl - but back in the early 90's I went
through 4 different Warp Drive blades while trying to get the landing gear
and brakes sorted out on my Anglin J-6, and all of those broken blades looked
just like the pictures of Ellery's broken blade. Tan foam core, thicker leading

back to the 90's ...

Certainly, the logbook says the first flight with the Warp was July 28, 1990, so
the prop was very likely purchased sometime in July, 1990, replacing the original
wood prop. Then on August 14, 1990, in the Remarks column it simply says
"Very bad landing." That is when I dropped in in from about 5' up at my second
landing behind the house, the shock struts failed under load (extension) and
it ended up on it's belly, breaking at least one blade, maybe both, but not sure.
The next flight was Sept 21, 1990, so I would have purchased at least one blade
during the time period between mid August & mid September. Then on September
24, the left brake locked up during a touch and go at TRI, and I did a snap ground
loop at about 35 knots, folding the gear under, breaking both prop blades,
doing extensive damage to the fuselage, and it was grounded until May 21 of
91. (I managed to convince the Tower Chief it was minor damage, and it was only
reported as an "incident.") So I would have purchased two more blades between
October of 90 and May of 91, but since I managed not to destroy those blades,
I have no idea how they were constructed.
Anyway, the ones I destroyed looked like Ellery's

I'd tell you that there are absolutely no absolutes, but there might be
one out there somewhere.
Around 1993, an acquaintance was flying a WD on an O-320 powered
homebuilt called a Skeeter in Oklahoma & discovered that the prop was
making 'whiskers' of carbon fiber on the blades near the roots. The
rather brutal power pulses of the Lyc were shattering the strands of
carbon. If he'd continued flying it, it could have ended in disaster.
Shortly after he returned the blades to WD, they discontinued selling
props for direct drive 4 cyl a/c engines. Long time ago & things may
have changed by now, but I asked them a couple of years after the
incident & they still weren't selling for Lycs at the time.
Sooo...hard to find those absolutes.
