. In Minnesota I have to pay State sales tax and a yearly registration annual fee. My Registration fee is based on a formula that is; cost to build, and the year built. Seems each state has a different set of rules every time someone sends in the paperwork. The "big-guys" simply put there planes into a corporation, lease it back to themselves and pay sales tax on a "as-used" basis - a monthly or quarterly amount that they supposedly bill themselves for the use of their own airplane. Guys who live across the border in another state end up not paying a dime! Here is how it breaks down for me in Minnesota for a 2006 Kolb Firestar 503. Cost to build; $18000.00 Purchase price; $12000.00 Sales Tax $825.00 Registration Fee $83.52 This is my first aircraft owner-ship, so how does this compare to your state ? Does your state have any additional fees ........Just Curious ? -------- Both optimists and pessimists contribute to our society. In New York, known as a "high tax state" , we have so far not caught the serious attention of the revenooers. There is no registration or annual fee. -likely because there aren't enough planes here to generate a noticeable yield. I think I paid a $40 sales tax. -attributable to the fact that my MkIII was built from a pile of junk that I dragged home. It is always a good idea to look for loopholes before you build. BTW, in the same vein, the little trailer I bought recently in Florida, on my own half acre, in a low crime zone, cost me $134.00 in closing costs. Taxes about $200 year public water, no fees I'm almost starting to feel patriotic :) BB On 26, Feb 2011, at 1:04 PM, Dennis Thate wrote: > > . > > > In Minnesota I have to pay State sales tax and a yearly registration annual fee. The results are inconclusive. We dropped the left trailing edge about 3/16". The thinking was as follows: It wants to roll left and yaw right, so we will drop the left trailing edge to pick up the left wing, and the additional drag on the left side will pull the nose left and bring the ball back to the middle. In hindsight 3/16" was way too much. It kicked the ball out of the box to the right as the drag on the left side went way up, and it still wanted to roll left. Also it just plain felt screwed up, since it was trying to fly cross-controlled with left roll and left slip. So we put it back like it was and I came home - I had flown to a nearby airport for the EAA meeting and burgers, and the wind was constantly increasing as the day progressed, so had to cut things short. My strip is one way in, one way out, and landing with a ten+ mph tailwind is not one of my favorite things to do. So called it quits for today. Will try dropping it just one washer this next week and see how that does. Also will call Travis tomorrow for advice. Richard Pike Richard P: A rudder trim tab corrected a similar problem on the last MKIIIx we tested three years ago. I don't think I can describe the way that airplane flew before we got a rudder trim tab on it. Was a very unnatural feeling, as if the controls were rigged backwards. ;-) john h mkIII Titus, Alabama

In Arizona there is some sort of a formula based on the valuation of your airplane. My Beech annual personal property tax is about 250 bucks. However after it is 40 years old which is next year it becomes an antique and then registration is about 40 bucks a year. Next year my airplane will be an antique. yepee As for the Kolb, which will be renamed to something else and will be valuated at about 12K I am estimating a tax of about 50 per year. From: "henry.voris" <henry_voris@yahoo.com>
25feb11 Fellow Kolbsters... The time has arrived for me to replace the crank in my thundering 447. I have called the usual suspects looking for a re-built crank... After the guy on the other end of the line stops laughing and wipes the tears from his eyes, I'm informed that there is no such thing as a re-built crank... Verboten by Rotax... As a new crank is more than $1K I was wondering if anyone knows of source for an illicit re-build??? I picture someone secretly pressing them together in some hidden valley next to his still and pakalolo patch. Thanks in advance... Attached are three photos shot yesterday... I borrowed a 152 from the flight school and flew the Lahaina Roads to see if the whales were still here...
