Oddly, I am in the same place kinda. My hanger-mate has a 2-seat Quick,
think a 503, it is n-numbered also. It needs just a few things from sitting
a long time, like tires. Skin looks/feels good but I have not done a punch
test. Has nice instruments, nice pod, parachute.
I was thinking I could fix it up, use it for my flying lessons (have no
license yet), save money over the rental costs, then later sell it (for
profit) or keep it for taking a passenger up.
Down-side is I would have to rent more space for it cuz the wings don't
fold. It would be one more project inserted between now and me getting new
fabric on my Kolb FS 1.

Guys, I learned to fly in a 2 place quick
and did about 90 hours in a single place quick.
The flight school put around 300 hours of training on those Quicks a
year. I saw the gears and axels get bent and replaced in an afternoon and
they would be back in the air.
It was a great way to train to move to the Ultrastar. Could not get any
tail wheel training so I spent about 5 hours on the ground getting use to
the Ultrastar before taking to the air.
I would get in a well maintained Quick in a minute, as I would a well
maintained Kolb.
Wish I could afford to have a Kolb or Quick as a second plane, I think
it's still the lowest cost fun flying you can get.

This looks pretty good. Ought to be able to easily modify it to fit, and it comes
with it's own cable. I stuck an old ELT antenna on the cabin top of the FSII
during the rebuild, and TRI apch ctl says it's clear as a bell on 125.50

The picture is of one I made for the MKIII back in the 90's. Made a new one just
like it because this one got rusty. Still works OK though. Directions to make
it here:

Mark,
I have a simple Bipole antenna that works very well and does not require a
ground plane. Only cost a few bucks to build.

If you want to go cheap, you can buy $15 worth of fittings and a BNC cable
at Rat Shack, get a piece of 3/32" brazing rod and make your own. If you
want to spend a little more (or maybe less depending on your scrounging
ability) get the BNC cable and see what your local avionics shop has in the
way of an antenna for a 121.5 ELT.

Hi Dana/Gang,
LOVE the photo with the planes under the Golden Gate!! (Gotta do that someday!)
Dana, Sounds like you are waiting for someone to talk you out of buying the Quicksilver..
Maybe that should tell you something. I'd listen to that little voice.
For myself, I started in hang gliders, got my PPL in rented Cessnas, got bored
and flew Acro in Citrabrias, and now own my KOLB M3x for Fun. (Also want inexpensive
to fly, no medical and MINE)
I want to fly Paragliders but NEVER want to parachute.. But I gotta have something!
Its ALL GOOD.. IMHO and I think its better to have a plane you can afford than
nothing at all.
And, any plane can kill you... look at KOLB history.
I love the fact that its TOTALLY your responsibility and totally up to you to determine
how safe you can be (or not!).
If you get the QUICK please let us know how it flies.. especially compared to a
KOLB. Good luck deciding and have FUN in any case.
My only suggestion to anyone is to fly it first before you buy to help you decide.
My 2 cents.

I just use the original rubber duck antenna on the end of an extension
cable. Works fine.

I've already flown this particular Quick quite a bit, a few years ago. It
flies like a pig, compared to a Kolb... but it needs some attention and
rigging work. I'm also told you can make a Quick fly a LOT better with a
wire kit to reduce the dihedral and better support the tail, but I've never
flown one so modified.

I've got an icom A5 and would like to get an external antenna that I can
mount on the belly of my Mark3. Anyone out have any good
recommendations?
my dipole center is at the left side bottom of the nose cone, the
center wire goes up the left side and accross the top. and the braided
wire angels back on about a 45 deg under the floor. the position was
selected to give the best swr, and both wires were cut to give the
best swr's. way cheep, way easy, and nothing sticking outside to get
bumped or bent. one watt radio will talk 150 miles plane to plane. the
signal report was good signal but with some background noise. last
week i had a hard time talking to another plane (super cub) in the
area,,, but one of the fbo's who was further away heard me ok and
relayed to the super cub. made me think the radio setup in the cub was
not up to par. he could hear the fbo but the fbo is putting out 15
watts.

My wife Laurie is in the back seat videotaping. This was taken before I installed
the audio cord, so I muted the engine noise.
