Was a good flight, a little bumpy, but quick for a Kolb. Was able to fly 420 sm in less than 5 hours and two landings enroute. Cruising at 80 to 85 mph, we maintained a ground speed over 100 mph for most of the flight. The problem was, if I climbed high enough to get out of the turbulence, I lost my tail wind The MKIII performed great, as usual. It was good to get back into flying cross country. Got to visit with many Kolb customers, old friends, and made some new ones. Although we had some serious weather, we faired well to have survived a tornado. My MKIII did some serious straining at her tie downs, but they held. Luckily she did not receive any damage from flying debris as did the factory FSII which also had the upper lift strut tangs bent from the tie down ropes. The FF suffered a broken lower vertical stabilizer, probably caused by the right wing which was in the folded position for display purposes. It created a large sail and huge side load on the tail wheel before it broke. As far as I know this is the first time I have had rain blown into the exhaust system. The day after the storm I was rotating the prop to check the oil in the 912ULS. During "burping" of the oil system, I noticed water on the tailboom as it dripped out of the silencer. After the airshow we pushed the MKIII out to the flight line to start the engine and blew the water out of the system. I don't know if water actually got into the engine or not, but the silencer on the Titan exhaust system was filled to the bottom of the exhaust outlet, and probably could have been blown into a cylinder with an open exhaust valve. -------- John Hauck MKIII/912ULS hauck's holler, alabama Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=336019#336019 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 09:46:28 AM PST US From: "John Hauck" Subject: Kolb-List: Sun and Fun 2011 Is Over With impending weather in the SE US, I packed my bag, loaded the MKIII, and took off for Alabama, Sunday morning. HKS Larry, Just a few tidbits on the HKS and tach's. You mentioned that you had a "EIS", but not the brand. If it's a Grand Rapids EIS, it should be sent in to them for a modification for accuracy. I believe they remove a diode and resistor for HKS only. If it's a MGL EIS, it will never read accurate. Depending on how you set it up, it will either read about 300 rpm too low, or 500 rpm too high. I ended up adding a tiny tach to my set up and verifying it with a hand held digital tach. A call to TIny Tach will tell you which one to use, I had it laying around and believe it was off a Rotax Ducate previously. I hope this helps, it sure would have saved me bunch of time last year. HKS The EIS was a Grand Rapids, and it was sent to them to convert to a four stroke. Thanks for the reminder.
