It cost more than that a few years back just to get them made. Brian just did a complete build for Japan and he did a full cabin enclosure with 060 Lexan. It looked awesome. He will upload to youtube soon. Hi Guy=2C Yes=2C I did make and install the spades/balancers. I also finished both fiberglass drooped wingtips=2C and installed them=2C too. In fact=2C the whole plane is 'almost' done. I will send you an email so you can send me back some photos of your bala ncers. I'd really like to see what you did!! On mine=2C with everything unhooked and the ailerons hanging loose=2C when I clecoed on the balancers=2C they hung in balance pe rfectly=2C both of them. One thing that really surprised me was how much more noticeable the stick movement became. All these years=2C with no balancers=2C I was used to a relatively light stick movement=2C left and right. But=2C after installing the balancers=2C I was surprised t o find that they were VERY noticeable. I guess this would make sense=2C though=2C since adding the we ight of the balancers almost doubled the mass of the ailerons alone. Still=2C I just thought it was odd..... Not used to it=2C I guess. The heavier stick forces SHOULD go away as the plane takes flight. The s pade part of the balancer is supposed to reduce the stick forces. I have a MKIII Xtra with balanced ailerons only=2C the elevators and rudder are not balanced and do not need to be. The balancers you describe sound like the ones I used on my ailerons! If you would like some pictures let me know off line and I will send you some. My e-mail is guyandjodi@bvillemn.net . I don=92t spend as m uch time on the list as I would like to=2C too many projects not enough tim e=2C but I would be glad to help you with this if I can. I see by your tail pictures you have the original MKIII Xtra horizontal stabilizer (4 corner) that=92s the one I have on my Xtra. Let me know if I can help. Kolb guys=2C In consideration of Bob Green=2C I'm going to do my part to bring up a qu estion to the Kolb list members=3B I'm in the middle of fabricating balance rods for my MkIII's elevator(s). I have the "4 sided" horizontal stabilizers like some Xtras have=2C with the outer dim ension close to 11" or so (see photo). The balance rods consist of 3/4" chromoly tubing=2C with a 3" welded "T" stub that inserts into the elevator's main tube and will be riveted. At the moment=2C the ro ds are about 12" long=2C and run the full length alongside the hor. stabs. Here's the dilemma!! Even when I slide in 7" long solid steel weight rod s into the ends of the the balance rod tubes=2C this still doesn't come close to "blanacing" the e levators. In fact=2C it takes quite a bit more solid steel rod=2C hung out on the end of the balance tube s to get it to 'act' level. While I'm monkeying around with various weights=2C in occurs to me (duh!) that if I want to 'balance' the elevators......I'm going to need close to the full weight of the elevators!! I can't say that I like this!! In order to achieve a true and complete elevator ba lance=2C I will need to add a fair amount of steel rod! (photos on request) Here's my question=3B For you guys that have the elevator balance rods =2C did you really add so much weight that the elevator was truely balanced=2C or did you possibly just add 'some' weight=2C that would act like a reasonably decent counter-balance? I know another way to solve my problem would be to lengthen the balance r ods=2C say...from their present 12" length (which doens't work at the moment=2C unless they were ma ybe filled with lead)=2C to extend out in front of the hor. stabs 6"=2C to something like 18" overal l. I sure DO NOT like this solution=2C since=2C IMO=2C it looks like the balance rods were a complete afterthought (which they were). Still....I don't want them to look dopey!! What did you guys do to balance your elevator? Nothing? .....Some weigh t=2C but not a complete balance? Or did you just add enough rod length to keep the weight low? I'm kind of at a loss at the moment=2C any thoughts?????? Mike Welch very unbalanced=2C quite possibly unstable=2C too. ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 06:34:39 AM PST US Subject: Kolb-List: Re: FSII rear enclosure for sale From: "Richard Pike" [quote="lcottrell"] A point of interest concerning the rear enclosure, mine cut my cruise by 2-4 MPH. Larry [quote] Yes it does, that is why when we had it on N582EF the first time around, we made some lexan fairings to fair the aft side of the enclosure in and clean it up. They made a big difference. Had a great flight, the Firestar ran beautifully. There are a lot of bigger RV's, GA & Warbirds at this fly-in, but the Firestar seems to always draws a crowd. WX got a bit hot & windy on the flight back and took me 2.5 hrs to get home (about 110 miles). Climbed to 4800 agl & still was into 800 fpm thermals! Ended up dropping down to around 700' & just enjoyed the scenery all the way home. Flew a total of 5.7 hrs, just about as much as I've flown all year! No, I won't be at MV this year. John and some of the others are flying up here the first of June, and I have a bunch of stuff to do before they get here. I am not sure how many if any will be there this year. Last year was a bust, I haven't heard anything about it this year. Its worth doing even if you are there by your self. You could just come on up here to Oregon with the rest of them. I think, ( don't have scales that I can trust) that the Firestar comes in at about 460 lbs. You might consider attaching some VG's to the sides of the enclosure to send the airflow on a better path, thus providing cleaner air flow through the oil cooler and the prop. If you make them out of Lexan, you should be able to use Shoe Goo and glue them to the edges of the enclosure.
